Depression and homelessness and now carless

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I’m looking for some prayers. My children and I are homeless but live with an elderly man that we take care of in exchange for a roof over our heads. We recently got into a car accident and our car was totaled and the insurance paid off the loan. Leaving us with no car and no money to put towards a car. The man we live with has a car and can’t legally drive it as he has tunnel vision and lost his license permanently. He will not sell me the car, I’ve been trying to be thankful that he does let us use it sometimes but he seems to use it as a control tool. He will tell us no to use it sometimes unless it’s for his needs. We cook, clean, do all his cleaning, we buy him food, we do his medication stuff, we read his mail, my kids help out with outside chores every day after school. He’s very demanding and difficult to handle. We are involved in a church group that runs twice a month until October. He asked me earlier today to stop attending it because of wear and tear on his car. He is also very demanding and expects us to jump and stop doing whatever we are doing and do whatever he asks us to do. He is very hard to deal with and it’s creating tension and anxiety for my children and I. There’s no open shelters around as they are all full. We need god to open up doors, it’s very hard living like this. I’m asking for prayers because I’m a prayer warrior. Please pray for open doors and opportunities only god wants for us, please pray for our mental state of minds. In Jesus mighty and powerful name amen

We hear your cry, dear sister in Christ, and we lift you, your children, and your overwhelming circumstances before the throne of grace with heavy hearts. The weight of homelessness, the loss of your vehicle, the oppressive control you’re enduring, and the mental strain of it all is more than any one person should bear. Yet we know that our God is a refuge for the weary, a strong tower for the oppressed, and a provider for the needy. You are not forgotten, and your faith, even in the midst of such hardship, is a testimony to His sustaining grace.

First, we must rebuke the spirit of control and manipulation that has taken root in this situation. Scripture is clear: "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another" (Galatians 5:13 WEB). The man you are caring for is exploiting your vulnerability, using his car as a tool to restrict your freedom and isolate you from spiritual nourishment. This is not the heart of Christ, who came to set the captive free, not to bind them further. We declare in Jesus’ name that this oppression must break, and that God will expose any unrighteousness in this dynamic. "The LORD works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed" (Psalm 103:6 WEB).

We also rebuke the spirit of depression and anxiety that seeks to overwhelm you and your children. The enemy wants you to believe that your circumstances define your future, but God’s Word says otherwise: "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (2 Corinthians 4:8-9 WEB). You are not crushed, sister. You are being refined, and God sees every tear, every sleepless night, and every moment of exhaustion. He collects them all (Psalm 56:8), and He will repay what has been stolen from you.

Now, we pray with urgency and faith:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the name by which every knee must bow. Lord, You see our sister and her children in their distress. You know the weight they carry, the fear that grips their hearts, and the exhaustion that threatens to overtake them. We ask You, Father, to move in power on their behalf. Open doors that no man can shut, doors of provision, doors of escape, doors of peace. You are Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides, and we declare that You will supply every need according to Your riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).

Father, we ask for a vehicle to be provided, whether through a gift, a low-cost opportunity, or a divine connection. You own the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10), and nothing is too hard for You. Break the chains of control that have bound them, Lord. Soften the heart of this man they care for, or remove them from this toxic environment if that is Your will. Give them favor with those who can help, and let Your peace guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

For their mental and emotional state, we pray for healing and restoration. Depression and anxiety are real, Lord, but You are greater. Fill them with Your joy, which is their strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Remind them that You have not given them a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Surround them with Your presence, Lord, and let them feel Your arms holding them up when they are too weak to stand.

We also pray for their church group, that You would bless and multiply their efforts. Do not let the enemy use this man to cut them off from fellowship, Lord. Stir the hearts of the leaders to reach out, to offer practical help, and to be Your hands and feet in this situation. Let this trial draw them closer to You, not push them away.

Finally, Father, we ask that You would reveal any areas where they need to trust You more fully. Give them wisdom to navigate this season with discernment, and the courage to set boundaries where necessary, even if it means making hard decisions. You are their defender, their provider, and their hope. Let them see Your faithfulness in tangible ways, Lord, so that their faith may be strengthened and their testimony may bring glory to Your name.

We declare over them: "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul" (Psalm 23:1-3 WEB). This is their promise, and we stand on it in faith. In Jesus’ powerful name, we pray. Amen.

Sister, we want to encourage you with a few practical and spiritual steps as you wait on the Lord:

1. Seek Wisdom and Counsel: Reach out to your church leaders or a trusted pastor. Share your situation with them, do not carry this alone. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety" (WEB). They may have resources, connections, or even legal advice to help you navigate this.

2. Document the Abuse: If this man is using his car to control or manipulate you, start keeping a record of the times he withholds it or uses it as leverage. This could be important if you need to seek legal or community assistance. Proverbs 31:8-9 reminds us to "open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy" (WEB).

3. Explore All Options: Even if shelters are full, there may be other programs or organizations in your area that can help with housing, transportation, or employment. Contact local churches, nonprofits, or even government assistance programs. God often provides through practical means, and you have every right to seek help. "Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7 WEB).

4. Protect Your Children: The tension and anxiety in your home are affecting them deeply. Shield them as much as possible, and remind them that God is their protector. Pray with them daily, and let them see your faith in action. "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6 WEB).

5. Guard Your Heart: It is easy to grow bitter or resentful in situations like this, but we are called to forgive and trust God to handle the injustice. Colossians 3:13 says, "Bear with one another, and forgive each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do" (WEB). This does not mean you should stay in an abusive situation, but it does mean you can release the anger to God and let Him fight for you.

6. Stand on God’s Promises: Write down Scriptures that speak to your situation and declare them over your life daily. Here are a few to start with:
- "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD, “plans for peace, and not for evil, to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11 WEB).
- "But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33 WEB).
- "Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved" (Psalm 55:22 WEB).

7. Stay Connected to God: Even in the chaos, prioritize your time with Him. It is easy to let prayer and Bible reading fall by the wayside when you’re overwhelmed, but this is when you need Him most. "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you" (James 4:8 WEB). Let His Word be your anchor.

Sister, we believe that God is already at work in your situation. What the enemy means for harm, God will turn for good (Genesis 50:20). You are not a victim, you are a warrior, and your battle is not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Put on the full armor of God, stand firm, and watch Him move on your behalf.

We will continue to pray for you and your children, trusting that God will open the doors He wants you to walk through and close the ones that are not part of His plan. You are loved, you are seen, and you are not alone. Hold fast to your faith, and let it be the lifeline that pulls you through this storm. "But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint" (Isaiah 40:31 WEB). This is your promise. Stand on it.

Thank you for sharing so honestly with us. We hear how heavy this has been, caring for your children without a home or car of your own, carrying all the daily work for this household, and feeling the tension of depending on someone who can be demanding and controlling with his car and expectations. It makes sense this would wear on you and on your kids, especially when you are trying to stay connected to your church community.

We admire your faithfulness in how you and your children serve in that home, and your desire to keep thankfulness even when it is hard. Wanting God to open only the doors He has for you is a wise prayer, and we will join you in it.

A couple of practical thoughts that may help as we pray:

If you have a trusted pastor or leader in that twice a month group, it could be worth talking with them privately about both the housing and transportation pressure. They may know of local benevolence help, ride sharing within the church, or community agencies that keep lists for housing assistance when shelters are full. In many areas calling 211 or a local community action office can also connect you to case managers who know about affordable housing options and programs that help with a vehicle after a loss.

You mentioned depression and the strain on your mental state. Alongside prayer, it can be a steady support to talk with your primary care doctor or a counselor, and to let your church support team know how you and your children are doing.

Father, we lift this mom and her children to You in Jesus' name. Provide a safe and stable place to live and reliable transportation in Your timing, and give wisdom for each next step. Guard their minds and hearts with Your peace, protect the children from anxiety, and give this family rest and strength each day. Amen.

We have heard your cry and have carried you and your dear children to the throne of grace, and we do not cease to pray that the God of hope would fill you with all joy and peace in believing.

Your trial is very heavy. To be without a settled home, to have lost your car, to bear the weight of daily care for another while also caring for your children, and to feel the tension of a house where you have no freedom, is enough to weary the strongest spirit. You well say that you need God to open doors, for there are no open shelters and no human resource at hand. Yet we trust in the living God, who is living in the most emphatic sense. He fills His own eternal Now and sees our ages pass. He was the living God before you were born, He is the living God in this present strait, and He will be the living God when this dark season has passed. He is the Source of life and the Sustainer of life, and because you are the temple of the living God, He is very near to you even now.

You ask for prayer for your state of mind, and we point you to that sure word, You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. This peace is not the false peace of the world, which cries peace, peace where there is no peace, but it is the peace which Jesus bought with His blood and which the Holy Spirit works in the soul. It is a peace in believing, a filling peace, a well founded peace. There is no peace worthy of the name to be found in any other way than by trusting Christ. To know the will of Jesus and to do it, this is rest. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, even in this dark world of sin, even when thronging duties press.

We have prayed, and we will continue to pray, that the Lord would keep your mind stayed upon Him, that He would guard your children from anxiety, and that He would grant you that intense restfulness which comes from being plunged by faith into His perfect peace. We have asked Him to open only those doors which His wisdom and love would have you enter, and to provide in His own way for your need of a home and for honest and safe provision for travel, whether by a car or by other means which He shall appoint. We have asked Him to give you wisdom to walk uprightly in that difficult house, to show love and faithful service as unto the Lord, and yet to seek godly counsel from your church family concerning right boundaries and protection for you and your children, for even faithful service must not be made a yoke of control.

We would gently encourage you, if it be at all possible, not to forsake the assembling of yourselves with the people of God. That twice monthly gathering until October may be one of the very means by which the Lord sustains you and your children. Seek the counsel of your pastor and of mature believers there, make your practical needs known to them, and let them help you seek lawful and stable housing and help with transportation. Cast your burden upon the Lord, for anxiety itself unfits you to meet the difficulty, while trust fits the soul to do its duty with calmness.

May the Lord hear our prayer for you:

O living God, look upon this mother and her children in their homelessness and weariness. You see their labor, their loss, and their fear. Fill them with joy and peace in believing, keep them in perfect peace as their minds are stayed on You, and let the blood of Jesus whisper peace within. Open doors of provision and refuge according to Your perfect will, guard their bodies and minds, give them favor and wisdom with those who can help, and draw them ever closer into living union with Christ, that His life may be their life, and His peace their portion. Bring them through this trial to give testimony that You are indeed the living God who hears prayer. In the name of Jesus Christ our only hope and our peace, Amen.

Go in peace. Your faith has saved you, and He who has saved you will keep you.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
