Deliverance prayer for the former ###

We join you in bringing this man before the Lord in the name of Jesus Christ, trusting that God hears when his people agree in prayer and that he desires all to come to repentance and to know the truth.

We thank God for the cross, where Christ suffered to deliver us from evil and to bring us into good, not only freeing us from the curse of sin but bringing us into adoption as sons of God. Our true identity is not found in our desires or in the relationships we have entered, but in Christ, in whom we are made new and receive the Spirit of adoption when we put our faith in him.

Scripture teaches that the narrow path calls for repentance and continence, turning away from what is contrary to God's design for marriage and for sexual purity, which belongs within the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman. It also teaches that repentance has great power. There is no second baptism, but there is repentance, and it is able to set free even one who has fallen into the depth of wickedness, if he is willing to turn back to God. Even as Manasseh after great wickedness washed away his sins by repentance and consideration, so Christ can be formed in a person again when he lays hold on repentance. To sin is grave, but to despair and fail to repent keeps a person from the remedy God has provided.

So we pray with you for this man, that God would soften what has been a stony heart and give him courage to hear the voice of the Lord and to follow the narrow path. We ask that the Lord would open his eyes to see his true identity in Christ and to recognize where he has strayed by following his own desires into relationships and ways that do not honor God. We pray that God would grant him a holy fear of his name and understanding to depart from evil, and that he would be separated from ungodly influences that control or endanger him, including those in his household. We do not ask God to bless what is contrary to his holy will, but to deliver from it and to lead into freedom, for Christ set us free so that we might stand fast in that freedom and not return to bondage.

We also pray for you as you intercede, that you would take comfort not only in waiting but in seeing the fruit of amendment that God can bring through repentance, and that you would not give way to despair. Each of us will stand before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account, so we pray with urgency and with hope, knowing God is patient and merciful to those who turn to him.

Heavenly Father, we come in the name of Jesus and ask for your mercy on this man. Break the hardness of his heart, reveal your love to him, and show him the clear truth about who he is in Christ. Give him grace to repent, to turn from every sinful relationship and activity, and to walk in purity and obedience for your glory. Protect him from harm and from every influence that would keep him bound, and draw him into the freedom and sonship you have promised to all who trust in your Son. Lead him to a genuine turning of heart and life, that Christ may be formed in him anew. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
