Your honest confession is itself a token of mercy at work within you, for it is the Spirit of God who shows us the bitterness of our own ways and makes us loathe the rebellion which once we chose. You do well to ask the Lord not merely to ease the pain of these past months, but to put out from your life those things and companions which drew you aside, and to do a deeper work within your own heart.
Take heed that your repentance be not of that carnal sort which only regrets the consequences of sin. That repentance is but fallen nature washed and brushed, yet still fallen nature, and it gives no glory to God and leads to no lasting deliverance. True repentance, that repentance unto life which is the gift of God and is preached in the name of Jesus, gives God glory. It makes a man weep and abhor his past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it, and it makes him avoid present sin because of the love of God who died for him. It looks out of self to Christ, and to Christ only, for remission. It yields works meet for repentance and it lasts, for repentance lives as long as faith lives. Ask the Lord for this holy, healthy, heavenly sort, which needs not to be repented of, which makes a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at the finished work of Christ.
And know that deliverance is of the Lord alone. It is not of him that wills nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. As He brought forth His people of old when the lamb was slain, so He still brings forth His own from bondage. He has found a ransom. The King's own Son has borne the penalty, and therefore when God Himself proclaims, I have found a ransom, your deliverance is certain, for it is already accomplished at Calvary. He does not merely drive out enemies before you, He brings you forth enriched with better things, with communion with Himself, with peace within your borders, with silver and gold of spiritual blessing which the world cannot give.
So I will pray for you, and I entreat you to pray thus with me.
O Lord God, who delights to show mercy, look upon this soul who confesses rebellion and mourns the snares of worldly company. Grant not a fleeting sorrow, but that true repentance which is unto life. Purge the heart from dead works and fill it with living faith in Christ alone. In Thy sovereign power, break the teeth of the ungodly influences that have beset this life, and bring forth Thy child out of all entanglement as Thou didst bring Israel out of Egypt. For Thy dear Son's sake, who is our ransom, forgive, cleanse, and keep. Let the love of Christ constrain henceforth to walk in holiness, and let this deliverance be attended with richer fellowship with Thyself, that all the glory may be Thine. Amen.
