Behind me

Your honesty before God about what you allowed into your life is the right place to begin, and God hears that kind of honesty. You have seen clearly that some of the pain of these last months came from your own choices, and you are asking Him to cleanse and separate you from what should not remain. That is what true repentance looks like.

There is a difference between being sorry because of painful consequences and truly turning away from what led to the pain. God does not ask only for sorrow, He asks for a turning, a deliberate choice to leave the old path and walk in a new direction with Him. When we turn to Him, even after we have turned away and followed our own desires, He remains willing to receive us and to restore fellowship that sin has broken.

You have felt the war inside between following what the flesh wants and following what the Spirit wants. When we give in to the flesh we feel miserable afterward, because deep inside we want to please God. You cannot deliver yourself from that bondage by trying harder in your own strength, but God by His Spirit can deliver you and set you free to serve Him. There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not continue to walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. If you stumble, you do not have to stay fallen. The Lord lifts you up and sustains you when your heart and mind truly desire Him and His best for your life.

Part of that new walk is choosing to pursue different things. Do not pursue what will not satisfy or what leads back into bondage. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith and lay hold on the eternal life that is yours in Christ. That also means seeking to live in a way that is above reproach, so that your daily life shows that you belong to Jesus. People notice how a Christian lives, and a changed life honors Him.

I will pray for you that God will do a complete work in you. May He in His mercy cut away every unhealthy tie you have asked Him to remove, including your former relationship and any influence from others connected to it, and keep them from affecting your life again. May He cleanse your heart, heal the hurt, guard your mind, and give you strength to walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh. May He teach you to live by every word that comes from Him, to find your security in being His child and an heir through Christ, and to know the freedom from condemnation that comes through faith in Jesus alone. May He lead you into a life marked by righteousness and peace as you seek first His kingdom and trust Him to guide every step.
