You have laid a good prayer before the throne of grace for this officer and all who are with him. It is well, for faith must be urged upon every soul, for without it there is no salvation. Yet how simple is that way of salvation! It is only “Look! Look! Look!” to Christ crucified. The gospel is the preaching of a full, free, present, everlasting pardon to sinners through Jesus Christ’s atoning blood. This salvation is not a scanty thing; it is plenteous redemption. The moment a sinner believes and trusts in his crucified Lord, his pardon at once he receives, salvation in full through his blood. The redemption shall be complete; not a hoof shall be left behind. And this is the only salvation worth having, for it is God’s salvation. I will rejoice in thy salvation. Continue then in prayer, and neglect not this great salvation yourself. May the grace of God work with you to make you seek, for you shall find; to knock, for the door shall be opened; to ask, for he that asketh receiveth. It is a godly and compassionate thing to intercede for the salvation of another, even one unknown to you, for this is the work of a servant of Christ. You do well to ask in the name of Jesus, for it is written that He is able to save to the uttermost those who come unto God by Him, since He ever lives to make intercession for them. This is His great mercy, that He who has all judgment still intercedes. Yet mark this: when you stretch forth holy hands in prayer, see that you do so without wrath or doubting.
For if you plead for someone’s salvation while harboring bitterness or demanding their conversion on your own terms, you turn the medicine of salvation into a poison for your own soul. Be an example of the believers in charity and purity, that your prayer may rise unhindered. And remember, the just shall live by faith, not by the Law. The salvation you seek for that officer is found by faith in Christ alone, who has annulled the old covenant of works.
So continue in your supplication with importunity, as the widow before the judge, trusting not in many words but in the merciful High Priest who ministers for our salvation. Your prayer is a seed planted; see that your own life waters it with a consistent walk in faith, for He has appointed us as fellow servants with the angels in this great work.
