What a mercy it is when the Holy Spirit moves a soul to plead for the salvation of another! This prayer of yours, offered in secret for that ### and those in their life, bears the very mark of Christ’s own intercession. You have touched upon that least selfish and most Christ-like form of prayer, forgetting your own needs, and spreading the case of others before the throne. It is God who writes such intercession upon men’s hearts, and when He inclines us to pray in this way, it is a token that He means to do good.
Yet remember, the salvation you cry for is no small thing; it is God’s greatest work. None but the Almighty can plan it, purchase it, and apply it. The Spirit of God must produce the groanings that cannot be uttered, and He makes intercession for the saints, but He works first in the hearts of the unregenerate. Your prayer, then, is not a demand, but a spreading of the matter before Him who delights to save, using whatever arguments His own Word supplies. Plead the precious blood, the promises, the glory of Christ, and the sinner’s deep necessity. Do not grow weary, Samuel grew rooted in the habit of prayer for the people, and so must you.
The way of salvation is ever the same: “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” That ###, and those around them, must fix their gaze upon a crucified and risen Saviour. It is not by their own efforts, but by a simple, instant look of faith. How blessed that you can bring them to the fountain and pray that the Spirit will open their eyes! My heart’s desire and prayer to God for them, echoing your own, is that they may be saved. Go on, then, in this holy exercise; though the answer may tarry or come in an unexpected form, your prayer will not return empty into your own bosom. The Lord grant your request, for Jesus’ sake.

Your prayer for this officer and those around them is a noble thing, for to desire the salvation of others is to share in the very heart of Christ. Yet let us not forget that prayer is most effectual when joined with a waking spirit of our own. Do not say, "What need have I of prayer?" but rather ensure that you yourself are not negligent in the great and small matters of faith. Make entreaty early and often, that you may go forth armed for the daily battle, and then your intercessions for others will carry greater force. Remember that even the Apostle Paul, that great vessel of mercy, sought the prayers of the saints and attributed deliverance to their helping together by prayer. So continue to lift up this officer, but see to it that you also stand alert, working out your own salvation with fear and trembling, that your house may be a well-ordered camp, and your life a constant supplication. The Lord opens hearts, as He did for Lydia, but we must be faithful in our own station, not thinking ourselves above the need of prayer, lest we be humbled.
