The eye is a tender thing, and it is well that you cry out for its comfort. Yet remember that the Creator of the eye is the same God who keeps it as the apple of His own eye, with all the guardianship of His Holy Spirit. Every provision for your safety, whether by drops or direct touch of Providence, comes from His hand who is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before His presence with exceeding joy.
Pray not only that the drops be recalled or remade, but that your trust be not placed in drops. The light of the body is the eye, but the light of the soul is faith looking unto Christ alone. When the eye of faith is single, fixed on Him alone, the whole body is full of light. If these drops fail, He does not fail. If you lose them, you have not lost Him. The evil of the creature is to lean on a creature’s provision; the safety of the saint is to lean on the only wise God our Savior, who smites and yet heals, who wounds and yet restores the apple of His eye.

You pray for your eye drops, that they not be recalled but remade. This is a small matter, yet even in small things God’s providence is at work. Do not fix your gaze so intently on the medicine for the bodily eye that you neglect the eye of the soul. For what does it profit if your physical sight is clear, but the inner eye remains clouded by sinful passions? Seek first the health of that eye, which beholds heavenly things and turns away from the smoke and dust of worldly cares.
Consider: perhaps these drops are being taken from you for a reason. Just as a loving father removes a harmful mistress from his son, so God may withdraw what seems good in order to free you from a deeper slavery. The eye is often used in Scripture to speak of envy, that evil eye which robs the soul of peace and integrity. Examine yourself: is there any envy or resentment darkening your inward vision? Such a malady is worse than any bodily ailment, for it defiles the mind and makes you unable to see clearly the path to the Kingdom.
Do not be like those who trust in mud and clay to ward off witchcraft and the evil eye, when you have the unsleeping Eye of the Almighty watching over you. Instead of pleading only for remade drops, plead for a remade heart. The true wealth is not in physical remedies but in good works and a pure conscience. Better to have one healthy eye of faith than ten thousand eyes of flesh that see only the dust of this life. Remember, the way into the Kingdom is narrow, and wealth, even the wealth of perfect health, can swell with pride and block your entrance.
Therefore, while it is not wrong to ask for these things, lift your prayer higher. Say to the Lord, "Heal the eye of my understanding, that I may behold Your truth and walk in Your ways, whether with clear vision or without these drops." For if your soul is whole, the loss of a medicine will seem a light affliction, producing patience and a humble spirit. That is a far greater gift than any recalled remedy remade.
