Anger

I am grateful you shared so honestly about the anger you carry toward your mother and the daily effort to release her and that anger to the Lord, and I hear how discouraging it is to do that day after day and still feel the same.

Releasing someone to the Lord is right, but there is a difference between quietly believing that God is able to heal and actually reaching out to receive His healing. In the Gospels many people believed Jesus could heal, yet the ones who were healed came and touched Him with expectation. That touch was a point where their faith was released and became active. Saying the words each day, I release her to you, can remain a passive hope unless in your heart you make a definite point of trust where you say, Lord, I am now receiving Your forgiveness and Your healing for this wound, and I will trust You to do the work in me. Faith is not passive. It reaches out and takes hold of what God has promised.

That is why persistence matters. There was a mother who came to Jesus for her suffering daughter. At first it seemed He did not answer, but she would not leave. She kept crying out to Him until He answered, and her faith triumphed. Come to Jesus in that same way. Do not go away until you have received from Him. Keep coming boldly to the throne of grace through Jesus Himself. You do not need another mediator. Jesus has opened the way, and you can come directly to Him.

Part of what you are feeling may be the weight of what honoring a parent means. God commanded us to honor father and mother, and that command stands. Honoring does not mean pretending no hurt happened or that sin did not occur. It means choosing before God to let go of vengeance and to desire good even while you are honest about the wound. Jesus also showed that our deepest family bond is with those who do the will of the Father. When His own mother and brothers stood outside, He pointed to His disciples and said that whoever does the will of God is His mother and brother and sister. You have a family in Christ who can walk with you, and you have a Father in heaven who fully sees the pain your earthly mother may have caused.

Anger itself needs to be understood. Jesus once looked with anger at hardness of heart and religious blindness, so anger at real wrong is not automatically sin. But the anger that takes root and wants to destroy is cursed. One of the patriarchs rebuked his sons years later because their anger had led them to slaughter a whole city. Ask the Lord to show you where your anger has moved from grief over being hurt to a settled resentment that wants to punish. That kind of anger will keep poisoning you if it is not brought to the cross.

Scripture pictures a river of life flowing from the throne of God, and a tree of life whose leaves are for the healing of the nations. That healing flows to you when you come and ask. There is forgiveness and cleansing if you will repent and ask the Lord for it. Many live with a plagued conscience, almost overwhelmed, because they have not yet come to receive the pardon God freely offers. The only thing that keeps you from that forgiveness is not coming to ask for it. Come and receive His love, His cleansing, and His pardon. He invites you to come and be made a child of God, and He will not turn you away.

So today, make that point of contact in prayer. Tell the Lord plainly what your mother did that wounded you, confess the anger you have held, and ask Him to forgive you for the resentment and to forgive her as well. Ask Him to fill you with His Spirit so that you can honor her without being bound by the hurt, and to heal the memory as only He can. Then thank Him that He has heard you, and rest in that, even if your feelings have not yet caught up.

I pray for you now that the Lord Jesus will meet you as you come to Him in faith, that He will wash your conscience, soften your heart, lift the heavy weight of anger, and pour His healing into the place that still hurts. May He teach you to walk in forgiveness day by day, to know you are fully loved as His child, and to experience the quiet freedom that comes when you have truly placed your mother and your wound into His hands. In the name of Jesus, amen.
