A prayer for ###

The days in that hospital bed are long, and the mind wages a bitter war when the body is weak. To choose happiness over fear is a noble desire, yet it often springs from a misunderstanding of where strength is found. Happiness, as the world gives it, is a fleeting thing, a calm surface easily shattered by the next wave of pain or bad news. But there is a deeper peace, a harbor that no storm can touch, which is found not by fighting for a feeling but by yielding to the will of God. Do not seek merely to escape fear, for fear can be a teacher. The soul that trembles before the Lord, as Moses did on the mountain where God spoke, has learned the beginning of wisdom. That holy awe, that realization that we are in the hands of a God who is a consuming fire, is more solid than the false cheer of those who have not faced the abyss.

Yet you must not then descend into a different kind of fear, a despair that accuses God as though He had done a dreadful thing. This is to fight against yourself, to stir a storm against your own soul precisely when it has been brought near to the harbor of eternity. The body suffers, yes. The mind recoils. But this trial is not from a wicked spirit or an evil hour; those are excuses for those who will not master the wild beast of their own passions. Here is where strength is truly found: to stand firm when the insults of sickness and the darts of dread are hurled at you daily, and yet not to faint. This is not a human power, but it requires your own resolution cooperating with the mighty aid from above. Think of the Apostle, that chosen vessel who was shown from the start how great things he must suffer for Christ’s name. He was not promised a life free from chains and lashes, but a strength to bear them. That same name is placed upon you. To sustain it well while in a hospital bed, to bear your cross without acting or speaking in a way unworthy of Christ, this is to triumph before the very hosts of heaven.

Therefore, let your prayer be turned. Ask not to find a passing happiness that flees from fear, but to be given the courage to say to your soul, "It is God who holds my hand in this affliction. Let me not be restive, as if He were an enemy." He commands you to bear all things meekly. You are not fighting a wild beast; you are in the hands of your Maker. And remember, the love of Christ, when it becomes intense, extinguishes all fear, just as a great fire drives out the cold. Do not make the concerns of your own body as foreign, as though you were not your own brother's keeper even to yourself. Care for your soul. The One who walked upon the sea in the fourth watch of the night instructs you not to seek for a hasty deliverance, but to bear all occurrences manfully. The only calamity is sin; sickness is but a school for the soul. So cease the fight against your circumstances and begin the fight against the passions of despair and complaint. Submit to the hand that heals by wounding, and there, in that great stillness of a yielded will, you will find a strength that has put fear beneath its feet.

When a hospital room becomes a long-term battleground, the walls can start closing in with fear. It is no small thing that you are asking for strength to fight and for happiness to overcome fear. That request itself shows a heart reaching for something solid. And the truth is, the strength you need right now is not something you have to manufacture from within, digging down into your own reserves. If we rely on our own wits and inner fortitude, we will eventually come to a day when they are simply not enough. But if we are trusting in the Lord and in His strength, then no situation becomes unhandleable, because the strength is not our own. He does not let His people down.

Fear is a tool the enemy loves to use because it is an enemy of faith. Where fear is allowed to take over, faith departs. It can immobilize us and make us react in ways that are wrong. The cure is not to try harder to be happy, but to remember the Lord. Remembering who He is and what He has promised is always the antidote. When David was on the run, hiding in the wilderness, his own strength had failed him, yet the psalms show him crying out to God and being brought from an attitude of defeat into one of victory and confidence. He did not find that confidence by looking at his circumstances; he found it by casting his burdens on the Lord in prayer. That is still a place of strength for every child of God today.

So pray for her, and encourage her, not to fear what flesh can do, because the Lord is her light and her salvation. He is the strength of her life. The world offers a fear that shrinks back from suffering, but the fear of the Lord is something different. It is a reverent awe that hates evil, and it is the beginning of wisdom. That kind of healthy fear puts everything else in its place. The eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy. He will be her hiding place. He will sustain her. As she fixes her trust there, the grip of terror loosens. I will be praying that she experiences that sustaining strength right where she is, and that the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, will guard her heart and mind.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer for your loved one during this challenging time. Our hearts have been united with yours as we have lifted up ###, asking our Heavenly Father to surround her with His peace, strength, and healing presence. We have prayed earnestly that she would feel the comfort of God’s love, even in the midst of this difficult hospital stay, and that she would find the courage to choose hope and joy over fear.

If God has answered these prayers in a way that brings encouragement, healing, or renewed strength to ###, we would be so grateful to hear a praise report. Your testimony could be a blessing to others who are walking through similar trials. If, however, the battle continues and you feel the need for more prayer support, please do not hesitate to post this request again. We are committed to standing with you and lifting her up until God’s perfect will is made known.

May the Lord continue to draw close to you both, filling your hearts with His peace that surpasses all understanding. We trust in His faithfulness and ask that He would sustain, heal, and renew ### according to His perfect plan. We pray all these things in the powerful and precious name of Jesus. Amen.
