Please pray for me about work. My job has a lot of potential but a huge amount of problems and one of those problems has revealed itself to be the fact that customers receive very poor service from the company and other departments. My department is the contact point for customers so we are often the ones that end up having to deal with the angry customers. I have anxiety right now about going into work and dealing with more customers who are justifiably angry. Please pray about this. Thank you.

Your present trial at work has, I perceive, brought you to the very question of fear, a question which Job himself once breathed out: “Will he plead against me with his great power?” That anxious thought, that sinking of heart as you face the justly angry customer, is the voice of nature fearing that the Almighty sets Himself against you. But hear now the answer of faith: “No; but he will put strength in me.” The same God who permits this vexing circumstance will not unleash His great power to crush you; rather, He will be your strength in the midst of it. The pressure of that place is not the pleading of His hand against you, but a call to lean upon Him.
Remember, this life is an appointed time, a warfare. It is your duty, Christian, and your privilege, to wait, like a servant who stands attentive, until your change comes. You shrink as a bone out of joint under the pressure, and that is natural to the flesh, yet be not driven to desperation. Despair is the chief of all things to be dreaded, for it renders a man ready for all sorts of sins. When fear unnerves you, action becomes dangerous. Do not let the fear of those angry voices make you dishonor your holy religion by a murmuring or rebellious spirit. Let the patience of Job come to mind: in all his losses, in all the unkindness of his friends, he sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. You have suffered little in comparison, yet we are often swift to complain. Let your tears of repentance follow that thought.

For when a soul is brought very low, even to the gates of hell in its own apprehension, then Mercy commences her blessed work. Job said, “God maketh my heart soft,” and when the whirlwind spoke, he cried, “Now my eye sees You; wherefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.” To see something of the skirt of His robe is to be humbled, and that humbling is the death of anxiety. When you know that He appoints the warfare, you will wait, just wait, for His deliverance.
Be not caught in the misty dungeon of doubt. Come forth into the daylight. Your work is not the hinge upon which the whole universe turns; it is but the department entrusted to you. The trial you describe is heavy, but do not lose heart. The very pressure you feel is an opportunity to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God that worketh in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure. When you stand before those angry customers, know that you stand in the presence of God, who seeth and heareth all things. If you keep this thought continually, you will not fall into despair or anger. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice unto Him with trembling; this is the only true rejoicing.
You are anxious because you fear the wrath of men, but consider St. Paul’s words: walk honestly toward them that are without, that ye may have need of nothing. Your duty is not to mend every failure of your company, but to do your own labor with diligence, even as unto the Lord. When you absorb the anger of others, do not thrust the sword into yourself by being revengeful or indignant. The grief another inflicts upon you is small compared to the harm you work unto yourself by keeping anger in your heart. If you remain watchful and keep yourself under control, the evil will return upon its own head, but you will emerge unharmed.
You must also be not weary in well doing. It is easy to grow faint when you see no fruit from your patience, but remember that he that worketh not, neither let him eat, yet the laborer is worthy of his hire. You are working, and your work is not merely a human transaction; it is the work of the Lord. Each interaction with a disgruntled customer is a moment to practice gentleness and to offer a kind answer, which turneth away wrath. This is your field for alms giving, not of money, but of patience and a calm spirit. If you cannot fast or perform other ascetic feats, you are still able to do this, and they who have done it before you are a witness, not a condemnation.
Finally, let no one shake your peace by accusing you of cause for the company’s shortcomings. Why does he not work? Why is this service so poor? Such accusations may sting, but you must not answer them with reproach. The anxiety you feel walking into work is real, and it makes sense. You are standing at the front line, absorbing the justifiable anger of people who have been poorly served elsewhere in the company. That burden is heavy, and the dread you carry is not something to dismiss. But I want you to know that this kind of fear has a way of narrowing your vision until all you can see are the angry faces and the problems that seem too big to fix. Fear and faith cannot occupy the same space for long. One will always edge the other out.
The enemy often uses fear to paralyze us right at the point where God wants to show Himself strong. Think about how many times in Scripture the Lord says, "Do not be afraid." It is not a mere suggestion; it is a command rooted in a promise. The cure for fear is not finding a way to make the customers calm or the company functional overnight. The cure is bringing your eyes back to the Lord. He is present with you in that office, on those calls, in those hard conversations. The consciousness of His presence is what dispels fear. He is with you. That means you can walk through that valley without being consumed by it.
At the same time, remember that your identity and your ultimate security are not anchored in how smoothly your workday goes. The work of your salvation, your standing before God, is a finished work accomplished by Jesus Christ. You are not striving to prove your worth by your ability to fix this mess. You are resting in what He has already done. That rest does not make you passive; it frees you to serve without being crushed by the outcomes. When you know that your true life is hid with Christ, you can face a frustrated customer and represent Him faithfully. You might be the only person in their day who responds with genuine patience and kindness, not because the company deserves it but because you are doing your work as unto the Lord.
Consider also that God often does a deep work in us before He does a wider work through us. This crucible of anxiety may be the very place where He is chipping off some of those edges that keep you from a greater dependence on Him. It is not pleasant, and you do not have to pretend it is. But you can count it as an opportunity for your faith to be strengthened. When you feel that surge of panic, you have a choice: let it push you toward frantic, fleshly reactions, or let it push you into prayer. "Lord, I need Your peace right now. Give me wisdom. Let me be Your calm presence in this storm."
I am praying that your heart will be open to the Spirit's work this week. That the fear that has been hounding you will give way to a quiet confidence. That you will walk into work not dreading what may come but aware that the living God goes with you. Greater is the One who is in you than any corporate failure or wave of customer rage. He will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being taken. The Lord bless you and keep you in that place.

The work of your salvation, your standing before God, is a finished work accomplished by Jesus Christ. You are not striving to prove your worth by your ability to fix this mess. You are resting in what He has already done. That rest does not make you passive; it frees you to serve without being crushed by the outcomes. When you know that your true life is hid with Christ, you can face a frustrated customer and represent Him faithfully. You might be the only person in their day who responds with genuine patience and kindness, not because the company deserves it but because you are doing your work as unto the Lord.
Consider also that God often does a deep work in us before He does a wider work through us. This crucible of anxiety may be the very place where He is chipping off some of those edges that keep you from a greater dependence on Him. It is not pleasant, and you do not have to pretend it is. But you can count it as an opportunity for your faith to be strengthened. When you feel that surge of panic, you have a choice: let it push you toward frantic, fleshly reactions, or let it push you into prayer. "Lord, I need Your peace right now. Give me wisdom. Let me be Your calm presence in this storm."
I am praying that your heart will be open to the Spirit's work this week. That the fear that has been hounding you will give way to a quiet confidence. That you will walk into work not dreading what may come but aware that the living God goes with you. Greater is the One who is in you than any corporate failure or wave of customer rage. He will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being taken. The Lord bless you and keep you in that place.
