What a prayer you have set before us, drawn from the very words of the Apostle, a prayer that reaches into the heavenly places and asks for nothing less than the unveiled glory of God. You seek wisdom and revelation in the true knowledge of Him, the hope of His calling, the riches of His inheritance, and the surpassing greatness of His power. These are not trifles to be lightly desired; they are the very substance of eternal life, the atmosphere of the world to come breaking into the soul. Yet mark this well, such blessings are not found by groping in the darkness of human reason, nor unearthed by the spade of mere intellect. Christ is the wisdom of God, and His gospel is the highest of all sciences. If you would have this true knowledge, you must find it in the word of revelation, and in the Person revealed. The Father of glory grants this Spirit of wisdom not to the proud who lean on their own understanding, but to those who come as little children to the feet of Jesus, who is Himself the power and wisdom of God.
The hope of His calling, what is it but this, that you are called not to a perishable crown, but to be a partaker of His throne, of His heaven, and that forever and ever? We are not ashamed of this hope, for it rests upon the solemn promises of God confirmed in the Person and work of His dear Son. And the riches of His inheritance in the saints, think of it! The Lord’s portion is His people, and He will glorify Himself in them with a splendor that outshines the noonday sun. Are these things mere words to you, or has the Holy Spirit begun to shed abroad in your heart the love that turns hope into a living, rejoicing reality? It is the Spirit’s office to take of the things of Christ and show them unto us; He is the anointing that teaches us concerning all things. And it is in the deep places of tribulation that He often reveals this love most sweetly, making the child of God to sing on his bed of affliction, “I know whom I have believed.”
Now consider the surpassing greatness of His power, the very puissance that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him far above all rule and authority. This is not a power that we dissect with cold logic but a power we feel when the gospel comes “not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance.” Has the Gospel come to you thus? A mere emotional stirring from an eloquent sermon will not bring eternal life; the Gospel of the blessed God must come as a thunderbolt of divine energy, exalting God in your estimation and casting down every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ. This resurrection power is the infallible proof of the faith once delivered to the saints. It is the finger of divine favor that touches the swooning heart and makes it stand upright. Our living Head, who has all things put under His feet, still works by that same energy toward us who believe, and there is no weakness, no faintness, no death in the spiritual life but He can quicken it by the love of His right hand.
But see to it that your pursuit of these high things is wedded to a personal, clinging, desperate knowledge of Jesus Christ Himself. Paul did not simply say, “that I may know the power of His resurrection,” but first, “that I may know Him.” Beware of studying doctrine, precept, or experiences apart from the Lord Jesus, who is the soul of all. Doctrine without Christ will be nothing better than His empty tomb, cold and comfortless. The ark of His covenant is always near to God, seen in His temple; and that ark is Christ, the living embodiment of all the promises. Come, then, as a true child of God, pleading the relationships of grace, leaning upon the covenant ordered in all things and sure. Let the supreme aim of your life be not merely to obtain these spiritual gifts, but to set Him first. Seek the Lord Himself, and these treasures, wisdom, hope, power, will be thrown into the inheritance as sweet incomes of His love, for He has said, “I will not make a full end of you,” and His heart goes out after His own beloved. May the Lord grant you the blessing you ask, by His Spirit. Amen.
"For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all those God has Made Holy, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you in my praying: 17 'That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a Spirit of Wisdom and of Revelation in the true knowledge of Himself. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so you will know the hope of His calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in those who have been sanctified, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accord with the working of the strength of His might 20 which He exerted in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His Right Hand in the Heavenly Places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, in this age and in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way,'" Eph 1:15-23.
