Before we can stand against the enemy, we must be low before God. The Scriptures are clear: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. There is no shield strong enough to protect a heart that exalts itself. Pride is the open door the enemy looks for. So the first posture of this warfare is submission, laying down our own will, our own wisdom, and our own strength, and bowing to every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. That is what girds our waist with truth. It is not merely knowing the truth, but living under it, letting it correct us and cut through our self-deceptions. The enemy is a liar, but the truth that governs our inward parts makes his schemes obvious.
The breastplate of righteousness is not our own imperfect record, but the perfect righteousness of Christ imputed to us. When we slip, as we all do, the accuser hurls condemnation. But the breastplate holds because we are not pleading our own goodness; we rest in His finished work. That brings peace, and that gospel of peace steadies our feet. When we know we are reconciled to God through Christ, we can stand on ground that the enemy cannot shake. Then the shield of faith, living, active trust in God's promises, quenches every flaming arrow. These arrows often come in the form of doubts, fears, or accusations that challenge God's love or His word. Faith refuses to judge by circumstances; it clings to what God has said. And this faith is proven in the testing. When we trust Him in the dark, when we obey without seeing, our faith is refined and becomes a shield that nothing can penetrate.
The sword of the Spirit is the word of God, and it serves both as defense and offense. Stored in your heart, it is the Spirit's weapon against the lies that come. But it is also the weapon by which strongholds in the lives of others are torn down. As you pray for all the saints and for boldness to speak the gospel, remember that the word itself must do the cutting. We often want to argue or cajole, but it is the living voice of Scripture that the Spirit anoints to pierce hearts. So let that word dwell in you richly, and let it be on your lips as you intercede and as you witness.
Praying always in the Spirit means your prayer life is not a list of demands to get your will done on earth. The purpose of prayer is to align with what God wills, to enter into His purposes, and to draw upon His authority in the name of Jesus Christ. The enemy fears that name, for Christ has already triumphed over principalities and powers. When you pray, "in Jesus' name," you are standing in the victory He secured and enforcing what He already accomplished. But always remember, it is not our fervency that overcomes; it is the One who is stronger than the strong man.
Keep putting on that armor daily, but keep it in the right order. Humble yourself before the Lord first. Let His word fill your mind and govern your steps. Trust not in your ability to stand, but in His ability to keep you standing. And as you pray for the church, that we might all open our mouths boldly, pray also that we would first be fed and nourished by the pure word of God, not the philosophies of the age. A well-fed flock, armored and watchful, cannot be overcome by the gates of hell.
