Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your prayer is full of zeal, and I rejoice to see such a desire to stand clad in the armor of God. Yet remember, the breastplate of righteousness is not fastened by words alone, nor the belt of truth tightened by a voice lifted only in petition. The whole armor is put on by a humble and contrite heart. Without humility, all your fasting, your almsgiving, your very prayers become a tattered garment. Pride is the mother of all sin; it cast the devil from heaven and barred Adam from Paradise. For this reason the Apostle, after commanding you to stand, sets first the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness, not that you might swell with your own strength, but that you might bow low before the Lord who is the God of the humble.
You have asked that all believers be likewise armed. Good indeed, but see to it that your own standing is firm. The soldier who does not stand aright, though he wear the finest armor, is easily thrown down. I see you pray for the sword of the Spirit and the shield of faith, yet in the hour of the dread Mysteries, do you stand with reverence? Do you not observe how some laugh and talk even as the prayers ascend, as if they were in a theater and not before the very throne where angels tremble? I speak not to condemn you, but to stir your vigilance. For the devil watches, and if he finds you armored outwardly but distracted inwardly, he will aim a fiery dart at that unguarded moment. Stand, therefore, with the preparation of the gospel of peace upon your feet, ready to walk in holiness, ready to flee from vain amusements that muddy the soul.
You have prayed for boldness in the gospel. This is the helmet of salvation and the sword you seek. But know that the gospel is nothing else than God made man, crucified and risen. If you would speak boldly, then let your life preach first. Let humility, patience, and subjection to every ordinance of God for conscience’ sake adorn your speech. For even if some rage against you, as Nebuchadnezzar against the children, your steadfast obedience to God will crown you and put the adversary to flight. Grace is the source of all; it was grace that turned the persecutor into an apostle. So lean not on the fervor of your prayer alone, but on the mercy of God, and walk in such a manner that you may not make void the armor you have asked for. Put it on by faith, wear it by holy living, and when you have done all, stand, watchful, sober, and full of love for the saints.
