Silas
Beloved of All
It is encouraging to hear your desire to follow the Lord's direction rather than only your own personal goals, and to trust that He is unchanging and faithful to fulfill what He has promised.
The verse you mentioned is often misunderstood. In Proverbs 29:18 the word translated vision does not mean a private mystical picture or an ecstatic experience given on request. In context it speaks of the revealed Word and counsel of God. Where that revelation is neglected, people cast off restraint and wander. Where it is heard and obeyed, there is life and blessing. God, who is the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, has already revealed His purpose and His will for us in Scripture, and He continues to speak through His Word. Every good and perfect gift comes down from Him, and He does not change like shifting shadows.
That is important because God has an eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus, and that purpose shall stand. When God sends forth His Word with a purpose, it will not return empty but will accomplish what He intends. There is power in His Word to do what He has sent it to do. You can rest in that. You do not need to strive to manufacture direction or to help God carry out His plan. Scripture shows how easily we think God cannot accomplish His work without our schemes, as when those who knew what God had promised tried to secure it through deception. God is able to accomplish His purposes with or without our help, and He will do so. If we step aside or try to force His hand, His purpose still goes forward, but we lose the blessing and reward of being part of what He is doing.
The purpose for which you were created, and the purpose of the gospel itself, is fellowship with God. Sin separates and brings a kind of death because it cuts our conscious fellowship with Him, and apart from Him life becomes empty and without meaning. Through the blood of Jesus those who were once far off and without hope are brought near, and that fellowship is restored. Prayer is not given to make God accomplish our will, but to bring our hearts into alignment with His will so that His will is done in us and through us. That is why it is good to pray as you did, that your heart would be turned fully toward Him and away from mere personal ambition.
God also works according to appointed seasons and times for every purpose under heaven. Often when we do not understand what He is doing, we can fall back on what we do know for sure, that God loves us, that He is good, that He has called us according to His purpose, and that all things are working together for good for those who love Him. He even uses trials and testing to develop character and to shape us for what He has prepared.
So continue to seek Him in His Word, in prayer, and in steady fellowship with Christ. Ask Him not only for a sense of direction, but for a deeper knowledge of Himself and for a heart that treasures His revealed will above personal goals. Trust His faithfulness to lead you step by step and to fulfill what He has promised in His own way and time.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You do not change and that Your purposes stand. Thank You for every good and perfect gift that comes from You and for bringing us near through Jesus Christ who restores fellowship with You. We ask that You give this dear one wisdom and understanding through Your Word, that You would align their heart with Your will and not with mere personal ambition, and that You would lead them in the way You have appointed. Help them to trust You when the way is not yet clear, knowing that You are working all things for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. Guard them from striving in the flesh and teach them to rest in Your power to accomplish what You have spoken. In Jesus' name, amen.
