Yet in the same breath, Scripture declares that the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. If you have not already, we urge you to fall on your knees in repentance, confessing your sins to God and to those you have wronged, for "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

There is forgiveness with God, and your cry that you have ruined your marriage and may have ruined your career is not beyond the reach of that forgiveness. Hear the word which Scripture sets before you, There is forgiveness with Him, that He may be feared. It is not a forgiveness from man, nor from your own efforts to make amends, but a divine forgiveness, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake. It is surprising forgiveness, so great that it is repeated as if God Himself would have us wonder at it, and it is complete and eternal forgiveness for Christ's sake, through His blood shed for the unjust that He might bring us to God.
Yet Scripture warns us to try our hearts as to the nature of our sorrow. There is a carnal repentance that comes from judgment and fear and the shame of consequences, and there is a true repentance which is the work of the Spirit of God in the renewed heart. The question to be weighed before the Lord, whom no man can deceive, is this, does your repentance give God glory. True repentance takes the side of God against your own sin, it justifies Him and condemns sin itself, not merely the trouble sin has brought. It stands at the Cross and sees sin forgiven in Christ and then grieves more deeply than before, saying, I know my sins are forgiven, but now their pain to me is all the grief and anguish they laid, my Lord, on You.
That true repentance is never alone. Faith and repentance are inseparable. The repentance which ejects sin as an evil tenant and the faith which admits Christ to be the sole master of the heart go together. The repentance which pulls down and the faith which builds up are joined by God. A repentance which makes you weep and abhor your past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it, and which makes you avoid present sin because of the love of God who died for you, is saving repentance. Ask before God, what is your repentance. Does it lead you to look out of self to Christ, and to Christ only, for salvation through Him alone.
There is forgiveness, and it is to be had now, at this moment, whatever your sins have been. If you have been the chief of sinners, there is the forgiveness of the chief of sinners to be had, and God can bestow it now upon the one who comes with a penitent heart and trusts in Jesus. But know the marks of that repentance unto life. It will yield works meet for repentance, it will be practical and it will last. Repentance lives as long as faith lives. It is not a bitter operation to be gotten through once, but a sweet and abiding grace that keeps the heart tender toward God.
Concerning your marriage, hold fast what God has ordained, that marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that all sexual union and living together belongs within that covenant alone. Do not seek a blessing upon what God calls sin, but seek His mercy to cleanse sin and to make you faithful within His holy order. If you have sinned against your spouse, true repentance will own the wrong without excuse, will turn from every unfaithful and impure way, and will seek, where it is possible, to make confession and restitution with honesty, humility and patience, not demanding restoration but walking in uprightness and leaving the outcome to God. Concerning your career, commit your way to the Lord in integrity, confessing where you have done wrong, and walking henceforth in truthfulness and diligence.
I will pray for you, and I urge you to bring this matter also before a faithful pastor who can know you and counsel you face to face.
