Update on my ###'s illness

Thank you for sharing this update about your sister. It is encouraging to hear that she has improved a great deal, and we continue to join you in prayer for her complete recovery, especially that her appetite and strength would fully return.

We believe that God does heal today, both spiritually and physically. The prophet Isaiah spoke of the suffering of the coming Savior bearing our griefs and sorrows, and Matthew shows us that this includes our physical sicknesses as well as our need for forgiveness. When Jesus broke bread and said it was His body broken for us, He was pointing to a work that touches the whole person. At the same time Scripture is honest that healing does not always come instantly or in the way we expect. Paul prayed three times for his own affliction to be removed and learned that God had a different purpose in allowing it to remain. That reminds us not to presume upon God, but to trust His wisdom while we keep asking Him for mercy.

The Bible also shows that Jesus healed in many different ways. Sometimes He healed with a touch, sometimes with only a word from a distance, sometimes instantly and sometimes gradually. There is one account where the healing came in stages, which helps us see that a gradual recovery is still a true work of God. Much of what we call natural recovery is also divine, because God Himself designed the body and the processes that restore it. Whether healing comes in a moment or step by step, it is God who gives it.

We also remember the greeting to Gaius in the third letter of John, where the writer expresses his heartfelt wish that his friend would prosper and be in good health even as his soul prospers. It is not presented as a guarantee that every illness will be immediately removed, but it does show the loving heart God wants us to have for one another and the connection between health of the body and health of the soul. We can pray with that same desire for your sister, that as she grows stronger physically, the Lord would also strengthen and encourage her inwardly.

Eating itself does not make a person more spiritual or less spiritual before God, but sharing food is a simple and deep part of life together. To eat from the same loaf and the same bowl is a picture of fellowship and of lives being nourished together. So when a loved one cannot eat normally, it weighs on us. It is right to bring that ordinary, daily need to the Lord and to ask Him to restore her desire for food and her ability to be nourished.

We will keep praying that the Lord will continue the good work already begun in her, that He will give her renewed appetite, peaceful rest, and full strength, and that He will give you peace as you care for her. We trust Him to do what is best according to His perfect will, and we thank Him with you for the improvement you have already seen.

Father, in the name of Jesus we thank You for the improvement in this dear sister. We ask You to continue to touch her body, to restore her appetite and bring her to full health in Your time and way. Comfort her and her family, nourish her soul as well as her body, and let Your grace be evident each day. Amen.
