We hear your heart in this and we are praying with you in Jesus' name. This trip has been heavy for you and you have come to the right place, bringing every anxious thought and lonely ache to Jesus Himself. We understand that feeling torn between wanting to be a gracious guest and feeling offensive, while also feeling tension with another adult in the house. We understand that deep loneliness that rose up when you received a warm hug and realized how long you have gone without that kind of physical care and affection.
We want to encourage you first about the tension in the house. The Lord calls us to pursue peace and to guard our words, especially when we are guests in another's home. We pray with you for that peace that surpasses understanding. Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. And Colossians 3:15 says And let the peace of God rule in your hearts.
We hear your humble prayer, do not let me be the one to make it harder, and that humility is pleasing to God. Proverbs 15:1 tells us A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. And Ephesians 4:29 says Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. James 1:19 reminds us to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. We encourage you to walk in that gentleness, to be quick to listen, to offer help without being asked, to show gratitude for hospitality, and to do all you can to live at peace. Romans 12:18 says If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. And 1 Peter 4:9 says Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As a guest, serving quietly, cleaning up, speaking words of thanks, and yielding in small matters can soften the whole atmosphere. We also pray for the other adult you mentioned, that God would soften both your hearts and help you work together so it does not feel like work, bearing with one another in love as Ephesians 4:2-3 teaches.
We also want to speak tenderly and truthfully about the deeper ache you shared. You were reminded of someone's husband, his faithfulness and warmth, and it stirred your own longing to be loved and held like that, and then you felt shame that Jesus' love felt less than enough without physical care. We want you to know that your longing itself is not shameful. God Himself said in Genesis 2:18 It is not good for the man to be alone. He created us for companionship and He knows our need for human love and touch. Psalm 68:6 says God sets the lonely in families. It is not a failure of faith to desire a godly marriage and the comfort of a spouse who will hold you, cherish you, and walk with you. What we must guard against is coveting another person's husband or letting our desires lead us toward unfaithfulness or impurity. Exodus 20:17 warns us not to covet, and Jesus taught in Matthew 5:28 that even looking with lustful intent is sin in the heart. Even a moment of confusion, as you described, is a signal to guard your heart, as Proverbs 4:23 says Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. That warm hug you received was a glimpse of the affection you long for, but we encourage you not to seek that fulfillment from a man who belongs to another, but to bring that longing honestly to the Lord and trust Him to provide in His holy way.
God's love is enough to save and sustain you, and at the same time He is compassionate about your loneliness. He does not shame you for feeling alone in this evil world. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Isaiah 41:10 says Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Your feeling that something is closed off and ruined inside you is something Jesus can restore. Joel 2:25 promises I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten. If you desire marriage, we pray with you for a godly husband, for a lifelong covenant marriage between a man and a woman that honors God. Hebrews 13:4 says Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled. We encourage you to pursue courtship with the goal of marriage to a Christian believer, not seeking physical intimacy outside of that covenant, but trusting that God can bring a spouse who will love you faithfully and hug you with a pure and steadfast love. Psalm 37:4 says Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. As you delight in Him, He will shape those desires and fulfill them in His timing.
You asked if God will help you be happy before you die, for your daughter and for yourself. We believe He wants to give you joy even now, not just someday. Psalm 16:11 says In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more. And Galatians 5:22-23 says But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Happiness rooted only in circumstances fades, but joy rooted in Christ can grow even on a hard trip. 1 John 1:9 assures us If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, so there is no need to stay in shame for feeling lonely or for those fleeting confused thoughts. He forgives and cleanses as you have asked.
We pray together now.
Father in heaven, we lift this dear sister and her daughter to You in Jesus' name. Lord, You see this trip, every tense conversation, every effort to be a good guest, every moment she has felt offensive or on edge. We ask You to make peace in her heart and peace around her. Let Your peace rule in this house. Give her wisdom for how to act and what to say, let her words be gentle and gracious and full of grace. Help her and the other adult to work together in unity and to find solutions with kindness. Teach her how to serve and bless this household while she is a guest.
Lord, You see her deep loneliness and her longing to be loved, held, and cherished. You know how long it has been since she has been hugged like that, and how tears almost came. Father, heal what is ruined and closed off in her. Restore her capacity to feel Your love and to receive human love in a holy way. Forgive her where she has felt shame and where her thoughts drifted toward another's husband, and cleanse her heart. Give her hope that You see her desire for a godly marriage and that You set the lonely in families. If it is Your will, provide a faithful Christian husband who will love her as Christ loves the church, who will hold her with warmth and honor her for a lifetime. In the meantime, hold her Yourself, let her know she is not alone, and fill her with Your joy so she can be light and happy for her daughter and for herself. Restore joy to her, Lord, as Psalm 51:12 says Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold her with Your right hand. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our only access to You and our only hope of salvation, amen.
