Struggling with math

Fruanar

Disciple of Prayer
Please lift up my granddaughter ### in prayer. She struggles with math and has taken this math class for the second time and is fearing that she cannot pass her semester final. I think that ### has a mental block about math and cannot get pass that fear of not being able to make a passing grade.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up ### in prayer as she faces this challenging time with her math class. Father God, You are the Author of all wisdom and knowledge, and we ask that You would break through the mental block and fear that has taken hold of her. Your Word tells us in James 1:5, "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." Lord, we ask that You would grant ### wisdom and understanding as she studies and prepares for her final exam.

We also pray that You would calm her fears and anxieties. In Philippians 4:6-7, we are reminded, "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus." Lord, we ask that You would replace her fear with Your perfect peace, and that she would trust in Your strength and not her own.

We rebuke the spirit of fear and doubt that has been holding ### back, for 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." We declare that ### is more than a conqueror through Christ who strengthens her (Romans 8:37), and we pray that she would approach her studies with confidence, knowing that You are with her.

Lord, we also ask that You would provide ### with the right resources and support. Whether it be a tutor, a study group, or a new perspective on the material, we pray that You would open doors for her to gain the understanding she needs. We trust in Your promise from Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future."

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who calms our storms and gives us strength in our weakness. Amen.

We encourage ### to seek the Lord daily for wisdom and understanding, and to trust in His promises. It may also be helpful for her to break down her study material into smaller, manageable parts, and to seek help from her teacher or a tutor if needed. Remember, the Lord is with you, ###, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Keep pressing on, and do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap, if you don’t faint (Galatians 6:9). You are capable, and with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

We’re praying with you for your granddaughter as she faces this math final. That feeling of a “mental block” can be so frustrating, especially after retaking the class, and it can feed a cycle where the fear of failing actually makes it harder to focus. Something that often helps in moments like this is gently naming the specific worry. Is she afraid of letting people down? Of proving something she already fears about herself? Just saying it out loud to a safe person can starve some of its power.

One grounded, simple step would be to encourage her to connect with a tutor or even just a study partner this week. Isolation can magnify anxiety, while a patient voice beside you can turn “I can’t” into “let’s figure this one out together.” Breaking the remaining material into small, concrete pieces, and celebrating each one she grasps, can slowly rebuild the confidence the fear has been stealing.

Above all, her worth isn’t riding on this exam. She is already loved and held steady, no matter what the grade book says. We pray that truth would sink down deeper than the fear.

Lord Jesus, we lift up this granddaughter to You now. Calm her racing thoughts and settle her heart. Give her clarity when she studies, and a quiet mind when she walks into that room. Surround her with support, and let her taste Your peace that isn’t dependent on outcomes. In Your name we pray.

The fear that has gripped your granddaughter’s heart concerning this examination is not a small thing, for it has already twice held her in bondage and now threatens to master her spirit. Yet that same fear, though powerful to hinder, is not a wall of granite but a shadow that flees before the light of faith. What is this dread of failure but the very thing that keeps her from rising to succeed? It is not her mind that is too small for the figures, but rather her soul that has bowed down to the fear of defeat, and that crouching posture robs her of the strength to stand and fight. The Lord does not deal with His children according to the measure of their native ability, but according to the measure of their trust in Him. Tell her that the same God who numbered the stars and calls them all by name is not confounded by equations or formulas, and He is near to those who call upon Him in the day of trouble. She has looked too much upon her own weakness and too little upon His all-sufficiency.

Will He plead against her with His great power? That is the question of fear, and faith answers with a resounding, No! He does not set Himself against the trembling heart that seeks Him, but rather He stoops to put strength into the one who has none of her own. The terror that grips her before the test is a snare, weakening her mind and dishonoring her God, for it imagines that her failure is mightier than His promised help. Let her bring this very weakness to the throne of grace, confessing that without Christ she can do nothing, even in the realm of numbers and logic. The throne of grace is precisely the place where mercy is obtained to help in time of need, and what is this but a time of need? Let her not rely upon the arm of flesh, not upon her own cramming or anxious study, but let her set her face to seek the Lord, who gives wisdom liberally to all who ask without doubting. The Holy Spirit is not only the teacher of heavenly mysteries but is able to clear the clouded mind and calm the trembling heart, so that what was once a jumble of confusion may become a plain path.

Urge her to go into that examination room not as one going to a contest of wits, but as a child going in the company of her Father, who has promised, Fear not, I will help thee. If she will but prayerfully commit each question to the Lord, trusting that He can order her thoughts and bring to remembrance what she has learned, the crushing weight of fear must give way. The fear of failure is not a mark of piety but a chain that Christ has come to break. Let her sing a song in her heart to the Lord as she takes up her pencil; let her say within herself, I am a worm and no man, yet the Redeemer is mighty, and His strength is made perfect in my weakness. When the mind would go blank with panic, let her look up and whisper, Stand still and see the salvation of God. It may be that this very trial is the Lord’s college for her soul, teaching her to cast herself utterly upon Him where her own power has proven so barren. If He will, He can cause her to pass, and He shall have the glory; if in some hidden wisdom He should not, even then He remains faithful, and His grace will be enough. But let her not entertain the possibility of failure as a thing to be feared, for that is to live in a slavish dread of tomorrow’s sorrow, which is strictly forbidden to the blood-bought child of God. Happy is the one who fears always to grieve her Lord, but miserable is the one who allows the fear of earthly disappointment to cast Him from the throne of her affections. Let her go forward, then, not fearing the powers of academic rigour or the spectre of a failing grade, but believing that He who is her wisdom and her righteousness will also be her composure and her clarity in the hour of trial.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The terror that shakes your granddaughter’s soul over this examination is a shadow of the true dread we all ought to feel, the dread of the judgment that awaits the unrepentant. Yet see how the Lord trains us to cast out all such care from our hearts. He who freed us from the fear of death, which held all men in bondage, will not leave her to be devoured by this little anxiety. Why does she shudder as if before an unconquered foe? The thing itself is nothing; it is the intention and the fear that make it a torment. Tell her to ask no anxious question about tomorrow, but to do her work as though offering it to God, and to despise the fear as a thing trodden underfoot.

I will lift her up in prayer, but let her also lift up her own soul. Where is her treasure? The grace that comes from above remains only where there is trembling before God, not before a schoolmaster’s grade. Let her consider the woman with the issue of blood, who dared not touch Christ himself but only the hem of his garment and was healed at once. So too, a small act of faith, a turning of the mind toward the Lord’s goodness, can stop this long hemorrhage of fear. Let her ask for that healing, and then study with diligence, as unto the Lord, not as unto men. For if she gains the whole world of academic success and loses her soul, what profit will it be? And if she fails, she has lost nothing that the fire cannot burn. I beseech you both, let not this mental block become a demonic table from which you eat daily; refuse to sit at that feast of anxiety. Fight not against the providence of God, for nothing is more bitter than to war against one’s own member, and she is a member of Christ. Therefore, let her arm herself with prayer and contempt for this fear, and she will find that the true beauty of a tranquil soul is never disfigured by such despondency.
