Spirit of anxiety and depression

Disciple of Prayer
Pray for me, there’s a spirit of anxiety that’s been tormenting me for the past few weeks. I used to be incredibly happy, but I’ve lost all motivation in life. My only source of motivation is my spouse and my dog. Please pray that this spirit of anxiety leaves me.

We have heard your cry and we are lifting you up together before the Lord in Jesus' name, for we know how heavy and tormenting a spirit of anxiety and depression can feel, especially when you remember a time of happiness and now feel all motivation is gone.

We want to encourage you that what you are feeling is not hidden from God and you are not alone in this battle. We thank God for the blessings He has given you in your spouse and your dog, and we see your love for them. Marriage is a holy gift from God and we pray He will continue to strengthen that bond, but we also want to gently remind you that our deepest hope and motivation must ultimately be rooted in Christ Himself, for people and even beloved pets, as precious as they are, cannot carry the full weight of our joy and purpose. Only Jesus can.

Scripture tells us clearly about the spirit you are facing, For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7. That tormenting anxiety is not from Him. Instead He invites us, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. We are also told to be casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true deliverance and salvation. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. And There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to call upon His name, confess your need for Him, believe that He died and rose again for you, and trust Him as your Lord and Savior, for He is near to the brokenhearted.

We know the Lord draws especially close in this season, for Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18. He promises, Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10.

So together we pray for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one who is tormented by anxiety and weighed down by depression. Lord, we rebuke this spirit of fear and heaviness in Jesus' name and we ask that You command it to leave. Pour out Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Restore joy where it has been lost, rekindle motivation and purpose, and remind them that their life is held in Your loving hands and that You have a good plan for them. Draw them close to You, strengthen their marriage that it may honor You, and help them to cast every care upon You because You care for them. Fill them with Your power, love, and self-control, and let them feel Your nearness each day. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek Him daily through prayer and reading His Word, to share openly with your spouse and with a trusted pastor or mature believer, and if this heaviness persists, to also seek wise counsel from a godly counselor or medical professional, for God can bring healing through many means. Keep crying out to Jesus, for He hears you and He will not let you go.

We read your note and heard how heavy these last few weeks have been. Moving from feeling incredibly happy to feeling tormented by anxiety and with no motivation is disorienting, and we appreciate you reaching out so honestly.

It makes sense that your spouse and your dog have become your main sources of motivation right now. That bond is a real gift, and we are thankful you have that companionship and love close by. Still, weeks of carrying anxiety can wear anyone down, and you deserve support beyond just pushing through.

A steady next step that often helps is to bring another trusted person into what you are carrying in person. If you have not already, consider talking openly with your spouse about how persistent this feels, and also reaching out to a pastor and to your primary care doctor or a counselor. They can listen, help you sort through what is happening, and walk with you while we continue to pray for you. Seeking that kind of care is a wise and caring choice alongside prayer.

We are keeping you in prayer and we care about what you are facing.

Father, in Jesus name we bring our friend before You. You know the anxiety that has settled in and how much they miss feeling like themselves. Please quiet what is tormenting them, restore hope and motivation day by day, and lead them to supportive people who will walk closely with them. Let them know they are not alone and are deeply loved by You. Amen.

We have heard your cry in these weeks of torment, and we do not pass it by lightly. To be wearied in the length of your way, to have lost the joy and motivation that once made life bright, is a heavy affliction, and we sorrow with you under its weight.

There is a word of promise for such a season as yours, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." That perfect peace is not found by looking within, for within there is no hope of deliverance by our own strength. It is found where the blood of Jesus whispers peace within. When the mind is stayed upon Christ, when sorrow is borne with Him and duties are done for Him, He makes peace in our borders and fills the soul with better than the finest wheat. The very anxiety which arises through being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty, and to tell it only to yourself will bring no good. But to tell it to the Lord, to stay your mind upon Him, is the way of rest.

You speak of your spouse and your dear companion as your only motivation, and we thank God for every tender mercy He places in our lives. Yet no creature, however beloved, can bear the weight of your soul. There is no hope for you in yourself, and there is no lasting hope in any other hand, but there is hope for you in Him whom God has provided to be the Savior of such as you. Egypt may well picture those states of sorrow and sadness, depression and oppression, into which the people of God come far too frequently, and it is possible to go down into Egypt by reason of our own depression of spirit and inward despondency. But deliverance comes when the Lamb is slain. God has not only invented a way of deliverance, He has found a ransom, and that ransom is Christ Jesus. Look out of yourself to Him and you are saved. Cast away all self confidence and repose on Jesus and your spirit lives.

We will pray for you, and we ask the Lord to lift this burden according to His perfect will.

O Lord our God, who has found a ransom for sinners going down to the pit, look in mercy upon this afflicted one. Thou seest the anxiety that has tormented day and night, the sinking of spirit and the loss of all heart for life. Speak perfect peace to this troubled mind, and keep it stayed upon Thyself. Forgive sin, apply the blood of Christ to the conscience, and let that blood whisper peace within. Deliver from the noise of inward archers, from remorse and terror and alarm, and grant faith to look wholly to Jesus Christ alone for salvation and for rest. Teach this soul to trust Thee, to seek Thee in the closet, to walk with Thee in daily duties, and to find in Thee a hope that will not fail when all other props are gone. Draw near to all who are dear to this house, and work in every heart that which is according to Thy holy will, that Thou mayest be glorified in making peace and giving life. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus our only hope, Amen.
