Sister

Dhitlor

Good and Faithful Servant
Please pray that God will change my sister's mind to take my mom to her brother's funeral. She says she isn't going as of now. Thank you.

We hear your heartfelt plea and stand with you in this time of grief and concern for your family. It is understandable to desire unity and support during such a difficult moment, especially when honoring a loved one who has passed. The Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven," including a time to mourn and a time to gather in remembrance.

First, let us lift this situation to the Lord in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, asking for Your divine intervention in this family matter. Lord, we pray that You would soften the heart of our sister, that she may find the strength and willingness to accompany her mother to her brother’s funeral. We ask that You would remove any barriers, whether pride, pain, or misunderstanding, that may be keeping her from this act of love and support. Father, we know that where two or three are gathered in Your name, You are there among them (Matthew 18:20). We pray for unity in this family, that they may lean on one another and on You during this time of loss. Give them the grace to forgive, the humility to reconcile, and the love to honor their brother’s memory together. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

It is also important to reflect on the reasons your sister may be hesitant to attend. Has there been conflict or unresolved issues within the family? If so, this may be an opportunity for healing. Proverbs 15:1 tells us, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Encourage her with kindness and patience, reminding her that funerals are not just about the one who has passed, but also about supporting those who are grieving. Your mother, in particular, may deeply need her daughter’s presence during this time.

If your sister’s reluctance stems from personal pain or past wounds, remind her that God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Funerals can be a sacred space for closure and for leaning on the Lord. Encourage her to bring her burdens to Him, as He promises in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest."

Lastly, if there is any unforgiveness or bitterness in her heart, gently remind her of the importance of forgiveness. Ephesians 4:31-32 says, "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you." Funerals can be a powerful place to lay down past hurts and choose love instead.

We will continue to pray for your family, trusting that God will work in this situation for His glory and your family’s good. May He grant you all peace, wisdom, and unity as you navigate this season of loss.

We're sitting with you in this heavy moment. When a family loses someone, the grief itself can make simple decisions feel impossible, and it can stir up all kinds of emotions, anger, numbness, fear, that come out in unexpected ways, like refusing to attend the funeral. Your sister's "no" right now may not be her final word, but a sign of how much pain she's carrying. We've seen how pressure can sometimes harden a person's stance, while patience and curiosity can soften it.

So let's pray for a change of heart, not just in her, but in the whole situation. In the meantime, you might consider reaching out to her not with the goal of convincing her, but just to listen. You could say something like, "I know this is really hard. Can you help me understand what you're feeling about the funeral?" Let her voice whatever is beneath the refusal. Sometimes, when a person feels truly heard, their defenses lower and they can see the need to support your mom more clearly. Don't underestimate how much your steady, gentle presence can shift things over the next few days.

Lord Jesus, we lift this sister to You. You know the pain that's shaping her words right now. Please bring her comfort in her grief and soften her heart toward her mom and the rest of the family. Give this family unity and wisdom as they navigate these days of sorrow. Hold them all close to Your heart, and grant them the grace to honor this brother's life together. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The heart is the vital place, and when it sets itself in opposition, none but the Lord can turn it. Your sister’s refusal is not merely a matter of the mind; it is a matter of the heart. Pray then with faith, for He who promises to take away the stony heart and give a heart of flesh is able to do this very thing. He can make the unwilling willing, and melt what is hard as adamant. Remember how gentle He is with the brokenhearted, your mother has lost a brother, and sorrow swells the laden breast. Perhaps your sister’s heart is divided, wounded, or deceived by its own reasoning, but the great Healer knows every ache. Bring this care to Jesus, whose own heart bled for us, and beseech Him to shed abroad His love in your sister’s heart. The Lord can change her mind by changing her heart, for He does irresistibly save and victoriously conquer man’s heart. Wait upon Him, and let your own heart rest in His perfect wisdom and tender timing.

You ask prayer that God would change your sister’s mind, and this is a good request. For it is He who softens the stubborn heart, as the Prophet says, “I will take away the stony heart and give a heart of flesh.” Approach Him, then, with perseverance. Do not limit your prayer to a single hour, but remember the widow who by her importunity prevailed, and the friend who at midnight by his persistence shamed his neighbor into granting his need. Cry out without ceasing, and He who had compassion on the multitudes because they were as sheep without a shepherd will look upon your need.

Yet consider also whether your sister may have cause for her refusal. If your mother is frail of body or broken in spirit by grief, it is no cruelty to keep her from the turmoil of a funeral. Often the sick are quietly sheltered from such sorrows, and we do not condemn their keepers. But if this is not the case, then pray with confidence, and let no resentment take root in your heart. Show your sister a heart of compassion and longsuffering, forbearing as Christ forbears with us. Lay no charge against her, for it is God who elects, and who alone justifies. Strive to be gentle, that by your love you may draw her to the thing that is good.

Above all, fix your hope not on the success of this errand but on the mercy of God, who became a merciful High Priest because He saw us perishing. Whether they go or stay, He can comfort your mother’s soul and grant peace to your brother’s memory. Look not down to the earth, as swine bending to the mire, but set your mind on things above, where every tear shall be wiped away. Pray at all seasons, and entrust this grief to Him whose compassion never fails.

I understand the weight of this situation, and I join you in bringing it before the Lord. You are asking for a change of heart, and Scripture gives us sure ground for that kind of prayer. The heart is not beyond God's reach. The book of Proverbs tells us the king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, and He turns it like a stream wherever He wills. If He can do that with those in power, He can certainly work in your sister's heart. As a child of God, you can trust that her heart is not a locked door He cannot open.

The real need is not just a change of plans but a change within. Tears and promises mean little if the heart remains unmoved. Outward actions will only ever follow what is already inside. So we ask the Lord to do the deeper work, to cut away whatever hardness, resentment, or self-focus might be blocking her from seeing what honoring her mother requires in this moment. The command to honor father and mother does not expire when we grow up; it includes caring for them in their grief and need. Jesus rebuked those who used religious devotion as a reason to neglect their parents. The heart of the matter is always the heart.

Keep your own heart steady as you pray. Ask the Lord to search you, too, and remove any leaven of bitterness or demand that might rise up. Your sister needs to see evidence of a willing heart in you, even as you long to see it in her. What is done out of constraint has no reward before God. We want her to go, yes, but more than that, we want her to go with a heart made willing by the Spirit. That is the kind of change that lasts and brings healing to your family.

Let the word of God sink deep into your own heart as you plead this case. Hide those promises there, the ones about His power to soften hearts, to make rivers in the desert. Pray not just that she will drive your mom to the funeral, but that in doing so she would be ministering to her own soul, finding that the path of obedience is paved with love. May the meditation of your heart on these things be acceptable in His sight, and may you see Him turn your sister's heart as He sees fit.
