Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The pain that drives a soul to silent prayer is often the loudest cry in the ears of God. When Moses stood at the Red Sea, his lips did not move, yet the Lord said to him, "Wherefore criest thou unto me?" The heart can roar in its anguish without a whisper, and heaven hears. Hannah’s voice was not audible in the temple, but her inward groaning opened her womb. Even the blood of Abel, though his mouth was stopped by death, sent forth a cry more piercing than any trumpet. So do not think that your silence is emptiness. The Lord knows the weight you carry, and He needs no polished words to understand.

But take care: silent prayer is not an excuse for a silent life. A man may retreat into the garden with Christ, seeking a place free from disturbance, as our Lord often did. That is good, for the world is a tempest and every day a shipwreck waiting to happen. Yet if you are silent before God but then noisy in sin, that silence becomes a reproach. True prayer, whether voiced or not, is a weapon drawn for the fight. You go into the market where war rages and rocks threaten to sink your boat. If you have not armed yourself by that inward cry, you will be dashed to pieces. Do not say, "I have no need of others' prayers," for even Paul needed the Church's intercession. But neither lean on the prayers of the saints while your own soul sleeps. The Lord gives grace to the zealous; from the careless, even what he seems to have is taken away.

Therefore, pour out your heart in that silence. Let it be a cry not just of sorrow but of faith, like the lame who hauled themselves up the mountain to be cast at Jesus' feet. Say nothing, yet believe everything. Our Lord Himself, before the tomb of Lazarus, lifted His eyes and gave thanks, not because He needed to beg power from the Father, but to teach us that His will and the Father's are one. Your silent prayer unites you to that will, when it comes from a pure heart. And purity matters. Avoid even the shadow of suspicion in your dealings. A silent prayer offered while you harbor secret sin is a mocking echo. Examine yourself. Tear out the root of any evil before you bow your head. The younger Timothy was charged to keep all purity; if he needed such counsel, how much more do you?

Then rise from that silence and walk through the day with security. If God is made propitious by your heart's cry, you will laugh at every enemy. The day is long and full of hidden reefs, but prayer, early and often, is a favorable wind. Do not let your silence become a grave. Let it be a seed sown in the dawn, that you may reap a harvest of deliverance by nightfall.

Silent prayer is still prayer. God is not waiting for you to find the right words, because prayer was never about informing him. He already knows the need. What he desires is for you to turn your will toward his, even when you cannot speak. A quiet heart before the Lord can be one of the most honest prayers there is.

When words are few, do not imagine that your silence has closed the door. The purpose of prayer is not to get your own will done, but to make room for God's will. So you can sit before him in silence and simply yield: not my will, but yours be done. That is true prayer, whether it is whispered, spoken, or held silently in the heart.

I will stand with you in that silence and ask God to do what he has already purposed to do in your life. He is good, and he wants to bless you not because you have earned it, but because he is good. If you have never yet come to him, the first prayer he wants from you is simple: God be merciful to me, a sinner. From that beginning, you may bring every unspoken need to him with confidence, because he hears the heart.
