We hear your silent plea and stand with you before the throne of grace, lifting up the unspoken burdens of your heart. In the quietness, we know the Holy Spirit intercedes for you with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26). Though your prayer is silent, the Father hears the cries of your soul, for He is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).
Let us bring your needs before the Lord together, trusting that He knows what you need before you even ask (Matthew 6:8). If there is fear, anxiety, or uncertainty, we rebuke it in the name of Jesus, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). If there is sin weighing on your conscience, we pray for conviction and repentance, for if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
If your silence stems from feeling distant from God, we declare that nothing can separate you from His love, not tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword (Romans 8:35). This arrow of a petition, shot in secret, is the very warfare that storms the battlements of heaven. A prayer that is a swift dart, known only to the eye of God, is often the most potent. It is the silent ambush against the enemy of our souls, a cry that needs no sound because it is heard in the inmost shrine of the soul, the Holy of Holies within. Such a prayer is not hindered by the length of a liturgy; it is the soul’s glance toward the throne, a whisper of the spirit that reaches the ear of the Almighty before the words are fully formed. This is the method to be used always, hurled from the heart in the blinking of an eye, a constant breath of the inner man that requires no chamber or open window, but springs up on the spot, mingling with all the surroundings of life. The spirit of prayer is a plentiful mother, giving birth to these brief, silent cries many times a day.
Do not despise the day of small things or the prayer of few words. Let this silent cry be the calling upon a waiting God. He is not a tyrant demanding lengthy orations, but a Father bending down His ear for the lisping of His child. The waiting soul is not in despair; it is poised in a joyous and assured hope. The church is not a marketplace for worldly chatter, but a place where choirs of angels ought to gather, where heaven meets earth in earnest prayer and listening silence. When you ask for silent prayer, you ask for the very thing that befits the assembly of God. Yet do not think that merely requesting it from others is enough. I would not have you place yourself in a situation where you rely on the prayers of the saints while sleeping in your own soul. Paul himself did not say, "What need have I of prayer?" Peter was delivered from prison when the church prayed earnestly for him, and yet these were men who themselves were vigilant. If you are awake, you still need the prayers of others, and if you are drowsy in spirit, those prayers will profit you little unless you also stir yourself.
Prayer is a great weapon, and the day ahead of you is a battle, a tempest in which the boat of your life may be dashed on hidden rocks. Therefore, rise early and make God propitious by your own supplications. Enter the quiet of your room, a garden, or any place free from disturbance, as our Lord often withdrew to converse with the Father. In that silence, let not your mind wander to business and petty tradings, but bring your whole soul, estranged from the world. If you can, seek out holy men in the desert, those who have no other care but God, and visit them to receive their prayers and to give alms with your own hand. In such stillness, you will not only bestow material help but also become their fellow-captive, binding your soul in the chains of devotion.
But remember: the power of prayer comes not from the words alone, but from the state of the heart. Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus lifted His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me." He needed no prayer, for His will and the Father's are one, yet He spoke for the sake of those standing by, that they might believe. So when you pray in silence, do not think you are merely depositing words into the air. Let your silence be full of awe, as if letters from heaven were being read, before which angels and archangels stand with reverence. Let no turmoil of worldly business intrude, for even in the theatre, when the emperor's letters are read, governors, senate, and people stand upright with profound quietness. How much more should the assembly of God's people tremble and keep silence when the King of all is discoursing!
