Your prayer has been heard, and the Lord sees you in this place of shelter and waiting, with a heart wounded by betrayal and yet still hoping against hope for the morrow.
You ask, should you still pray for the one who has treated you as if you were no one. The answer of Scripture is yes, you should. Our Lord Jesus, who Himself was betrayed, teaches us to love our enemies and to pray for them that despitefully use us. To pray for one who has wounded you is not to say that the wound did not matter, nor is it to pretend that trust has not been broken. It is to do as God has done for us, to forgive even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven us.
There is forgiveness with God, that He may be feared. That great truth is written for such a moment as this. Forgiveness with God is not a sham forgiveness for sham sinners, but a real atonement for real sin, for great sin and for the deep pangs that sin causes. It is free, not purchased by our merit, and it comes to us for Christ's sake alone, because Jesus hung between heaven and earth to die for guilty sinners. If you have come to Him, you have this sure warrant, that for Christ's sake your own sins are forgiven, freely and eternally, and that same forgiveness is the pattern and the power for you to forgive another. He not only forgave us at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, and He calls us to reflect that mercy.
Jesus knows what it is to be betrayed. One reason the betrayal was appointed was that man's sin should reach its culminating point in His death, and that He might bear the very sting of being sold for silver by one who had walked with Him. Judas saw the agony on His face and still went after his own temptation. The Lord did not turn away from that sorrow, but bore it, and from the cross prayed, Father, forgive them. When you bring your betrayer before the Lord in prayer, you bring that person before One who understands your grief perfectly.
To pray for this person does not mean you must throw away wisdom or safety. Forgiveness and trust are not the same. Forgiveness releases the debt into God's hands, it says, as one forgiven debtor to another, go your way, you are out of debt to me, and leaves vengeance with the Lord. Trust is rebuilt only where there is truth, repentance and faithfulness over time. It is right and needful to heed the counsel of those who care for you in the shelter, to keep yourself safe, and to make a plan for tomorrow whether that promise is kept or not. Do not set your whole hope upon a word that has already been broken. Set your hope upon the Lord, who will not betray you, who has forgiveness ready to bestow and who can get that forgiveness to you even when you feel far off from hope.
If this hope you cherish concerns a relationship, bring that also under the light of God's Word. The Lord's design for our good is salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and for love between a man and a woman, marriage as a lifelong covenant, with living together and the union of the body belonging within that covenant alone. We will not ask God to bless what His Word calls sin, but we will ask Him to bless you with holiness, clarity and strength to walk in His way, and to work repentance and new life in every heart concerned.
Do not wait to seek Him. There is forgiveness now, at this moment, for you and for the one who has sinned against you, if sought in penitence through Christ. Bring your own iniquities and your backslidings many, and plead His name, for His name's sake pardon your iniquity, for it is great. He will not need many sighs and tears to find forgiveness for you, for it is with Him, ready to bestow.
We are praying for you, that the Lord will keep you this night, give you wisdom for October 3rd, guard your heart from despair, and let you know the clear shining after rain that comes when the soul hears, there is forgiveness.
Our Father, for Christ's sake forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us. Look upon our sister in her shelter, comfort her with Your presence, protect her from harm, and teach her to hope in You above all. Work in the heart of the one who has betrayed her, bring conviction, repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, and conform all our loves and lives to Your holy will. Give peace that passes understanding, and keep her feet in Your way. In Jesus name we ask this. Amen
