Beloved of All
There are bewildering horrors and, in deeds and words, a joy in unraveling the phases of the final chapter of life—times of wicked deeds and times of other actions—but Jesus Christ, have mercy; what could I say regarding Your name and what life holds for anyone—for me? Helping? The Helper Has Gone with My Mother / ###!

We hear the bewilderment and sorrow in your words as you ponder the final chapter of life, the mixture of horrors and joys, wicked deeds and other actions, and the deep loss you feel with your mother gone, and we join with you in seeking the mercy of Jesus Christ together.

We want to gently correct the thought that the Helper has gone with your mother, for Jesus promised that the Helper remains with those who belong to Him. He said, I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever, John 14:16, and that Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you, John 14:26. Even in the valley of grief, He has not left you. Jesus Himself said, I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you, John 14:18. Your mother may have finished her course, but the Helper who comforted her is still here to comfort you.

The Lord understands bewildering horrors and the search for meaning in what life holds. There is a time for everything, a season for every purpose under heaven, Ecclesiastes 3:1, yet we live in a fallen world where wicked deeds grieve the heart of God. At the same time we thank Him that you still find joy in unraveling the phases of life, for every good gift is from above. What you are feeling is the ache of grief and the longing for assurance, and God draws especially near in this place. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, Psalm 34:18, and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds, Psalm 147:3. He is described as the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

You cried, Jesus Christ, have mercy, and that is the most powerful truth you could speak regarding His name and what life holds for you. It is only by that name that we have access to God and hope beyond this final chapter. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12, and if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved, Romans 10:9. Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies, John 11:25. What life holds for anyone who trusts in Him is not only bewildering horrors but the promise that He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more, neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more, Revelation 21:4, and we are persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord, Romans 8:38-39.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of mercy for this dear one who is grieving and bewildered, mourning the loss of a mother and pondering the meaning of life and its final chapter. Lord, have mercy and reveal Yourself as the Helper who has not left, who abides forever. Pour out Your comfort upon this broken heart, bind up every wound, and be near in this crushed spirit. Forgive every wicked deed by the blood of Jesus and cleanse every conscience, and give joy and understanding as You unravel what life holds. Help our friend to call fully upon the name of Jesus, to believe in Him as Lord and risen Savior, and to receive the assurance of eternal life. Lead through this valley, for even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, You are with us, Psalm 23:4, and guide into peace, hope, and the knowledge that You hold the final chapter and the one to come. We ask this in the precious and only saving name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

We heard the ache in your words after losing your mother, and we want you to know we are sitting with you in it. When you say the Helper has gone with her, we hear how alone and bewildered this feels, and how many questions it brings about Jesus, about your own life, and about what is to come. It makes sense that everything would feel unravelled right now.

Grief often comes like that, not in a straight line but in waves, and no two people walk through it the same way. What you are feeling, the horror and the confusion and even the moments of trying to make sense of a final chapter, is part of how human hearts respond to deep loss. You do not have to sort it all out at once or carry it by yourself.

If you are able this week, we encourage you to let one trusted person sit with you in the sorrow, a pastor, a family member, a friend or a grief support group at a local church. Simply sharing what you shared here out loud with someone who will listen without rushing you can make the burden lighter.

Father, we lift the one who is mourning a mother to You. Have mercy and draw near, give comfort in the loneliness and wisdom for each next step. Hold this heart in Your care and guide gently in the days ahead. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

You have poured out a burdened heart before the Lord, speaking of bewildering horrors, of wicked deeds and other actions, of the final chapter of life, and of the Helper who seems to have gone with your mother. Your cry, Jesus Christ, have mercy, is the very cry which God delights to hear.

There is no hope for you in yourself, but there is hope for you in Him whom God has provided to be the Savior of such as you. All God's mercy to a sinner is gratis. He never sells, He always gives. He acts from no motive in us, but because He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy. Mercy thus pleads with the sinner, God will be glorified in your salvation, for He delights in mercy, and He says that He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. If you have been led to feel that you are guilty, to confess your sin, and to admit that you can only be saved through His grace and mercy, then trust the Savior, the Lord Jesus, who once died on Calvary's cross and now lives enthroned in glory.

The Scriptures speak to such an hour as yours, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. The God of patience and consolation would give you patience to wait upon Him and comfort to sustain you, and so strengthen hope within you. This is a good hope through grace, an everlasting consolation given by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God even our Father which has loved us. It is the hope with which your godly mother died, if she died in Christ, the hope with which all those who are in Christ have died. You may have that same hope, not by your own deeds or words, but by believing in Jesus Christ.

The Lord takes pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy. A bruised reed shall He not break, and the smoking flax shall He not quench. Though you feel desponding and say with Job, Oh that it were as in months past, the Lord says, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. When He wants to comfort us, He quickens us and so He comforts us. He can tell you of His mercy not in words only, but with a sweet sense of mercy shed abroad in your heart. He can make you feel the way of salvation as well as know it.

Remember the Word unto your servant upon which you have caused me to hope, for this is my comfort in my affliction. Take that promise and plead it in prayer. Tell the Lord, You have caused me to hope in Your Word, will You not honor Your Word. He who knows all things knows whether you love Him, and He knows your grief at the loss of your mother. He sees the bewildering horrors that trouble you and He is able to comfort your heart and establish you in every good word and work.

Turn then from every wicked way and from trusting in your own devices, for they said, There is no hope but we will walk after our own devices, and everyone do the imagination of his evil heart. Do not walk in that no hope. Lay hold on the rope of mercy cast to you in Christ. Confess your sin, trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved, and ask Him to quicken you and keep you by His grace.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, and comfort your heart with everlasting consolation, and give you to know what is the hope of His calling.
