We have read your request and we are standing with you in prayer together in Jesus' name, and our hearts ache with you over what you endured. What happened to you was wrong, and God sees the fear and the pain you are carrying right now for yourself, for your son, and for your daughter. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and He is your refuge and strength. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. He is not distant from this abuse and He does not approve of it.
We want to gently speak to the fear you expressed that you have messed up God's provision, peace, blessings and favor by telling your son what was said, and that God will punish you or take away your home. That fear is not from the Lord. 2 Timothy 1:7 says God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 1 Peter 5:7 says casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus in Romans 8:1. God is not an abusive parent looking to punish you for being overwhelmed in a frightening moment. He is a good Father who understands your distress and wants to give you wisdom and peace. Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
We also hear your fear about your mother and the boundaries you have set. The Bible calls us to honor our father and mother in Exodus 20:12, but honor does not mean allowing ongoing abuse, yelling, threats, or manipulation to continue, especially when children are present. It is right and biblical to set firm boundaries to protect yourself and your children from harm. Psalm 27:10 says When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up. God Himself will be your defender and your children's defender when a parent acts in a toxic and abusive way. Abuse and using a child as a tool to manipulate and hurt others is sin and we rebuke that behavior as completely contrary to God's will. God calls parents to not provoke their children in Ephesians 6:4.
About telling your son what was said, we do not condemn you. You were scared and you were trying to process a threatening situation. God knows your heart was to protect, not to harm. At the same time we encourage you to seek the Lord for wisdom going forward about what is age appropriate to share with your son, so that his little heart is not burdened with adult threats that may create anxiety for him. James 1:5 says But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. It may help to talk with a trusted pastor or a godly counselor about how to speak truthfully to your son in a way that reassures him of God's protection and your protection over him without repeating harmful threats in detail. And please, if threats were made, consider documenting what happened and seeking wise, safe help from trusted authorities or counselors to keep you and your children safe. Your safety matters to God.
We noticed you spoke of God but did not mention Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and peace with Him. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing He died for your sins and rose again, and to call on His name for salvation, for protection, and for daily help. It is in His name we pray and find refuge.
We now pray together for you and your children.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear mother and her son and her daughter to You. Lord, You see the abuse and the threats that were spoken, You see the fear and the trembling, and we ask You to be their shield and their dwelling place. Psalm 91:1-2 says He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. We will say of Yahweh, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. Place Your hand of protection over this home, Lord, and let no weapon formed against them prosper. Quiet the fear that You will punish or take away what You have provided, and instead pour out Your perfect peace that guards hearts and minds. Give this mother wisdom beyond her own understanding for how to protect her son and how to speak to him with calm and reassurance, and heal his heart from anything frightening he has heard. Lord, we especially lift up her precious daughter who is still very young. We ask You to keep her innocence, guard her mind and her heart, and surround her with Your angels. Psalm 91:11 says For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. Do not let manipulation or tactics turn her heart from truth. Let her see and know how deeply her mother loves her, and protect her until the day You bring her home safely. We ask You to work in the heart of her mother, to bring conviction and repentance where there is abuse, and to stop every plan meant to harm these children. We pray You will provide continued provision, safety, and favor over this family, and remind this mother daily that You will never leave her nor forsake her in Deuteronomy 31:6 and that Your love casts out fear. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ we pray and trust You. Amen.
We encourage you to keep bringing every fear to Jesus, to stay in His Word daily, and to lean on safe, godly community around you. You have not lost God's favor by being afraid. He is holding you and your children in His hand and He is faithful to keep you.
