Silas
Beloved of All
Your desire to see revival where you live is itself something to thank God for, because true prayer begins with Him. He puts His purposes and burdens on our hearts so that we speak them back to Him, and His desire is for His kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. When you pray for revival you are coming into harmony with what God already wants to do.
God has always used people of prayer to do His work. The apostle Paul is a clear example. Even when he was chained in a prison in Rome and could not travel, his ministry continued through prayer. Prayer is not limited by location. From that cell he was able to reach the churches he had planted across many regions, because in prayer he could intercede for them continually. In the same way, your prayers for your community are not small or confined. Through intercession you can have a real part in what God does there, and you are joining with Jesus Himself, who lives to intercede for us and who was promised to make intercession for transgressors.
Scripture reminds us that the earnest, heartfelt prayer of a person made righteous through Christ has great power and is effective. It is not the length of the prayer or the amount of time spent on your knees that makes it valid. The prayers recorded in the Bible are often very short. What matters is a sincere heart, often born out of deep need and dependence on God, offered in faith. That kind of prayer is not casual or careless. It is worship, recognizing the greatness and glory of God, and it is also petition and intercession, bringing your own needs and the needs of a lost world before Him. When we pray, our first aim should not be to get our own wishes fulfilled, but to seek for God's will to be accomplished.
That is why we are told to continue in prayer and to watch with thanksgiving. Persistence in prayer is not to change God's mind, but to open the door for God to do what He already desires to do, because He will not force His way against the willing choice He has given to people. As we keep praying, God brings our hearts into alignment with His purpose, and then we see answers come. It is a labor, a fervent striving in prayer, and it requires a continual attitude of communion with God, thinking of Him, worshiping Him, and bearing your soul before Him throughout the day, not only when trouble comes.
Prayer should also be our first response, not our last resort. When difficulties and opposition arise, the right pattern is to pray first and then to act with wisdom and faithfulness. Prayer does not take the place of obedient action, it prepares for it and goes with it. As you pray for revival, continue to live watchfully, share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and walk in a way that honors Him. If two or three agree together concerning a matter, the Lord has promised to hear, so seek out others who will agree with you in prayer for this burden.
Be encouraged that you are not praying alone. The Spirit of God ministers comfort and assurance as you pray, and Christ Himself is interceding for you. Keep bringing your community before the Father, asking that hearts would turn to Him, that sin would be confessed and forsaken, and that the transforming work of the Holy Spirit would be seen. God hears and God answers, and He will do in that place what only He can do as His people seek Him with faithful, fervent prayer.
