Relationship

Thank you for sharing your heart and bringing this burden to prayer. We hear your longing for freedom from addiction, for a love that is faithful and rightly ordered, and for closeness to God for both of you, and we want to join you in praying toward what is truly good and holy.

God does hear prayers for deliverance and he is merciful to those who turn to him. We will pray that your partner would come to know Jesus Christ as Savior, for it is through him alone that we are saved and made new, and that God would free him from the power of addiction. This kind of freedom often requires both spiritual renewal and practical help, so we encourage you to seek wise pastoral counsel and, where needed, trusted help for addiction, within the care of a faithful local church.

We also want to pray with care about your relationship itself. Scripture teaches that our closest bonds are to be formed first upon love for God, and that love for one another grows strong when it is rooted in that common love for him. When friendship and love are built on anything else, they remain weak and easily shaken, but when they are bound together in Christ they can bear much and remain firm. For that reason God has given marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and has reserved sexual intimacy and living together for within that covenant. That design is not to withhold good from you, but to protect love so it can be faithful, committed, and holy.

So rather than simply asking God to bless the relationship as it now stands or to remove every obstacle from it, we will pray that God will make both of you holy and help you to love in the right way according to his word. True love seeks first the other person's good before God, which means desiring his salvation, his purity, and his growth in Christ even above keeping the relationship together.

Let us pray together:

Father, in the name of Jesus we ask for your mercy. Draw both of these lives to yourself and grant repentance and faith in Christ alone for salvation. Where there is bondage to addiction, bring freedom, healing, and a new heart that hates sin and loves righteousness. Teach them what godly love is, a love without pretense, patient and pure, that honors you first. Give wisdom to discern your will for this relationship. If it can be made to honor you in a holy marriage covenant, lead them in that path with counsel, purity, and commitment. If it is drawing them away from obedience to you, give courage to step into chastity and, if needed, into separation, trusting your goodness. Help them to build their lives and any future together upon you, so that their love may be steadfast and pleasing to you. Amen.

We encourage you to bring this matter to a trusted pastor or mature believer in your church who can walk with you personally, help you apply Scripture to your specific situation, and support you both toward repentance, purity, and wholeness in Christ.

Your honesty in bringing this burden before the Lord is precious and He hears the cry of your heart. The longing you express to see your partner set free, to see hindrances removed, and to be loved in a right and faithful way is understandable, and God cares deeply about each part of it.

Scripture shows us that the most important thing God wants with you is not a formal or ritual connection, but a close, loving relationship as a Father with His child. Jesus taught us to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. That is the heart of prayer, a child speaking to a Father who loves him. That kind of relationship comes only through Jesus Christ, through His blood shed for the forgiveness of sins, because sin is what separates us from God. When we put our faith in Christ alone for salvation, God establishes that relationship, and then we can have real fellowship with Him and our prayers become living communion rather than empty routine.

This is why your own relationship with God is primary. Your walk with Him is like the vertical axis on which your whole life turns. If that vertical relationship is right, every other relationship begins to find its proper balance. If it is out of order, other relationships will also be out of order. You can often trace struggles in human relationships back to this deeper need. God does not want you to live trying to fix one human relationship after another while the center remains unsettled. He invites you first to come close to Him, to love Him and to know how much He loves you, and from that loving relationship fruit naturally grows.

That helps us pray for your situation with wisdom. Addictions are a form of bondage, and only Christ truly sets people free. The desire to see your partner freed is right, but the deepest freedom he needs is freedom from sin itself through a living faith in Jesus. Without that, even if one struggle is eased, the heart remains separated from God. So pray first that he would come to know Jesus truly, or if he already professes faith, that he would return to a real, loving walk with Him and not just outward religion. As that relationship with God becomes real, the fruit of a changed life, including self control, honesty, and faithful love, will come as the natural consequence of that relationship. You cannot produce that fruit by trying harder in your own strength. It grows as he abides in Christ.

In the same way, pray for yourself to be strengthened in that same loving relationship with God. Let your fellowship with Him deepen as you seek Him early and honestly, bringing your needs, your hurts, and your hopes to your Father. He wants to enhance every other relationship in your life through your relationship with Him.

God also shows us His good design for love between a man and a woman. The most important human relationship most of us will know is marriage, a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and it is within that covenant that romantic love and living together belong. That design is for our good and for His glory, reflecting Christ's faithful love for His people. True love that is right in God's eyes will be pure, patient, kind, and honoring to Him. It will not render evil for evil, but will seek what is holy and good for the other person.

So rather than simply asking God to bless the relationship as it is, ask Him to make both of you whole in Him and to shape your relationship according to His will and His holiness. Pray that God would remove ungodly influences, but also that He would give you both discernment to turn away from anything that does not honor Him, and courage to walk in purity. If you are not yet in the covenant of marriage, pray for wisdom about whether this relationship is leading you both closer to Christ and toward that covenant in a way that honors God, or whether God is calling you to step back until there is true repentance, freedom, and faithfulness.

May I pray for you in that direction.

Father, I lift this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ, who alone is the way to You. Thank You that You desire to be her Father and to have a close, loving relationship with her. Draw her ever closer to Yourself, help her to know Your love more deeply, and to walk with You in the newness of life in the Spirit. I also lift her partner to You. You see his bondage and his need. Have mercy on him. Bring him to genuine repentance and faith in Jesus, and by Your power set him free from addiction and from every chain of sin that separates him from You. Heal what sin has broken. If there are people or influences pulling this relationship away from what is holy, expose them and give both of them grace to turn from them. Teach them both what it means to love in the right way, with purity, faithfulness, and compassion, and to be courteous and forgiving toward one another as You have forgiven us. Above all, let Your will be done in this relationship. Make it honoring to You, and give her wisdom and peace to follow Your leading, trusting Your perfect love and timing. Amen.

Thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf. We are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer for your relationship. We have continued to lift you and your partner before the Lord, asking that God will free him from his addictions and break every chain that binds him, for whom the Son sets free is free indeed as promised in John 8:36. We have also been praying that God will remove anything and anyone that is trying to come in between your relationship or hinder your relationship, and that God will draw your partner closer to Himself and help him to love you the right way with a pure and godly love as described in 1 Cor 13:4.

If your request was answered and you have seen God bring freedom and restoration, please post a praise report and let us all know so we can rejoice with you. If your request does not seem to have been answered, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer.

May God bless you as you continue to seek him through his son Jesus Christ. We pray that the Lord will bring deliverance, healing and wholeness to your partner and to your relationship according to His perfect will. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
