Relationship

Dhitlor

Good and Faithful Servant
I started a relationship with someone a few months ago out of loneliness although I have since grown to deeply love him. Although there were some reasons to consider that the relationship was brought into my life by God, there were also other reasons to doubt that. Since I left the new age, I have been constantly attacked by spiritual warfare that has been retaliating against me for coming back to Christ. Since I started a relationship with this person, I notice that in some ways, the symptoms of this warfare have decreased. Because of the uncertainty that I should really be with this person including us being unequally yoked in some ways, I did try to break up with him and have considered doing so multiple times. Each time I think about breaking up with this person or do so, the warfare amplifies again. I met this person at a time where I really felt overwhelmed by this warfare. Satan is really fighting me hard through it and any strides Christ makes in my life through this battle are fought against so hard. At this point, I'm not sure how I can be expected to survive this warfare because there doesn't seem to be any other option except for it to destroy me. This person coming into my life brought some emotional and mental relief from what I was going through. And, again, I notice the warfare decreased when I started dating him and I will be honest, that did also make me want to stay with him. Please pray for me about all this. Thank you.

We hear the deep struggle in your heart, and we stand with you in prayer, lifting every concern to the throne of grace. The spiritual warfare you describe is real, and the enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that you may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). The fact that you are experiencing such intense opposition is a sign that the enemy sees the work God is doing in you and fears it. Do not lose heart, for greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

First, we must address the foundation of your relationship. The Bible is clear that believers are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14). If this person does not share your faith in Christ, the relationship cannot be blessed by God in the way He intends for marriage. Even if you have grown to love him, love alone is not enough to sustain a godly union. Marriage is a covenant before God, and it must be built on shared faith, shared values, and a shared commitment to Christ. If he is not a believer, we must gently but firmly rebuke the idea that this relationship is of God. The temporary relief you feel from spiritual warfare does not justify continuing in a relationship that contradicts Scripture.

We also must address the reality of spiritual warfare. The enemy will use anything to distract, deceive, and discourage you, including relationships. The fact that the warfare intensifies when you consider ending this relationship may be a tactic of the enemy to keep you bound in something that is not God’s best for you. The Bible tells us to resist the devil, and he will flee (James 4:7). You must stand firm in your identity in Christ, putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and taking every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

We do not say this to condemn you but to call you higher. The loneliness you felt is real, and it is understandable that you sought comfort. But God’s way is always better than our own. He is the one who sets the lonely in families (Psalm 68:6), and He will provide godly companionship if you seek Him first. If this relationship is not aligned with His will, He will close the door, and though it may be painful, it will be for your protection and His glory.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our sister who is battling spiritual warfare and seeking Your will in her relationship. Lord, we ask that You would give her clarity and peace that surpasses all understanding. Strengthen her in the inner man, that she may stand firm against the schemes of the enemy. If this relationship is not of You, we ask that You would make that unmistakably clear and give her the courage to walk away, trusting You to heal her heart and provide what she truly needs. If there is any unconfessed sin, we ask that You would bring it to light and cleanse her by the blood of Jesus. Fill her with Your Holy Spirit, that she may walk in victory and not be deceived by the enemy’s tactics. Remind her that she is not alone, You are with her, and You will never leave her nor forsake her. Give her wisdom, discernment, and the strength to obey You, even when it is difficult. We rebuke every spirit of confusion, fear, and loneliness in Jesus’ name, and we declare that she is more than a conqueror through Christ who loves her. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to seek godly counsel from mature believers who can help you discern God’s will. Spend time in prayer and fasting, asking God to reveal His heart for this relationship. Remember, His plans for you are for good and not for harm, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). Do not be afraid to surrender this relationship to Him, trusting that He will provide for you in ways you cannot yet see. The battle is fierce, but the victory is already won in Christ. Stand firm, sister, and do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not give up (Galatians 6:9).

We can hear how worn down you feel, and we are sorry you have been fighting so hard. Leaving the new age and returning to Christ is a real turning, and the spiritual pushback you describe is exhausting. It makes sense that the relief this relationship brought felt like a lifeline. When the pressure lifts, even for a little while, it can be hard to think clearly.

At the same time, relief is not always the same as confirmation. A relationship can ease pain without being God's direction for us, and the return of heavier warfare after a breakup may be the same battle resuming rather than a sign you made the wrong choice. We don't say that to push you either way; we say it so you can breathe and know that God is not afraid of your uncertainty. He is with you in the middle of it.

Please do not sort this out alone. Ask a mature Christian leader or counselor who understands both spiritual warfare and relationships to walk with you through this. A steady, outside perspective can help you separate the relief the relationship brings from God's actual will for your life.

Father, thank You for seeing every part of this struggle and for holding this person close. Please give her clear wisdom, steady peace, and the strength to keep seeking You above every other source of relief. Surround her with trustworthy people who can help her discern Your direction, and quiet the fear that says she cannot survive. In Jesus' name. Amen.

You have spoken of a warfare so heavy that you fear it will destroy you, and you have looked for relief in the love of a man rather than in the arms of Christ. That is the very snare of the enemy. The decrease of your trouble while you walk in disobedience is not the seal of God's approval, but the lullaby of the devil to keep you sleeping in a forbidden path. The peace you have found is not the peace which passeth understanding. It is the temporary calm of a conscience that has been quieted by sin.

Consider the yoke you have chosen. God has commanded, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. You admit this person is not yoked with you in Christ. What then? You have taken up a yoke of your own making, a yoke of self-will, and you wonder that the warfare returns when you try to break it. The enemy does not trouble those who are already in his net. When you turn to obey God, the battle rages again because you have resolved to escape. That is not a reason to stay in the net. It is the proof that the net is real.

You fear the warfare will destroy you. But there is One who has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Your safety in the battle is to stand where God has placed you, and God has placed you outside the camp of an unequal alliance. The loneliness you felt before this relationship can be cured by seeking heavenly company. The absence of godly society is a narrow path, but every child of God must sometimes march in single file. If you flee to Christ, the words of God's Book made living to you shall be as the angels to your mind, and the Father Himself shall have fellowship with you. You will not perish in the wilderness if you have the Shepherd with you.

Let me speak plainly. If you will not submit to the yoke of Christ, you will have to submit to the yoke of Satan. His yoke is iron. The easy yoke is the one that seems hard at first, the yoke of saying, Not my will, but Thine be done. Break off this relationship, not because you will immediately feel relief, but because it is right. The relief will come in God's time, but obedience must come now. The promise is not that the warfare will vanish at once, but that He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. The enemy may roar, but he cannot pluck you from the Father's hand.

You have felt the stir of God's will in your conscience. The very fact that you have tried to end this relationship shows the Spirit is not silent within you. Do not quench that voice. Do not mistake the temporary calm of sin for the rest that Christ gives. He says, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. That rest is not found in the arms of a creature, but in the will of God. Take His yoke. Learn of Him. And you will find, perhaps not at once, but surely, that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. The iron yoke of a disobedient love will only grow heavier. The wooden yoke of Christ, taken in submission, will be a chain of gold about your neck.

Now may the Lord of Hosts give you grace to obey, courage to stand alone, and faith to believe that He does all things well. You are not forgotten. You are not cast off. Return unto Him, and He will return unto you.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have spoken with honesty about the fear and the relief, and I do not make light of either. The enemy you are facing is real, and he is enraged because you left the new age and fled to Christ. But a lessening of attack is not the same as God's approval. The devil can withdraw one assault to make you accept a more dangerous yoke. Do not let relief become the measure of truth.

You say you entered this relationship out of loneliness. Loneliness is a bitter affliction, but a bond begun in fear of being alone is not a sure foundation. That the torment quieted when this man came near proves only that a companion brought some natural comfort. It does not prove the Lord gave you this yoke. And when you tried to break away, the warfare increased. That may not be a sign to stay; it may be the enemy's fury against your obedience. He attacks most when he sees a soul alone. Therefore do not fight this by yourself. Run to the church, to mature believers, to elders who will pray with you and stand around you. We have the greatest need to be flocking together continually so that we are not open to the devil's attacks.

If by unequally yoked you mean he does not share your faith in Christ, or that the relationship pulls you away from wholehearted obedience, then Scripture is not silent. A sluggish donkey yoked with a swift horse will either refuse to move or drag the other down. The comfort he gives you cannot replace the peace of Christ. Staying with him mainly to avoid spiritual torment is not love; it is fear making a treaty with the wrong ally.

I will pray for you, but I will not ask God to bless a yoke that draws you away from Him. I will ask Him to silence the enemy, to give you the lowliness that trembles at His word, and to surround you with the faithful. Your survival does not depend on this man. Christ is sufficient. The lie that you have no other option comes from the enemy. You have the cross, the Scriptures, the church, and the Spirit of God.

When you obey, do it with godly witnesses. Expect the storm to howl, but stand. A contrite heart God will not despise, and the Lord is near to the brokenhearted. I will pray now: Lord Jesus, deliver this soul from the fear of the enemy. Give her courage to choose obedience over relief, and shelter her among your people. Let her not make a covenant with fear. Amen.

Thank you for sharing so honestly about what you have been walking through. Coming out of the new age and returning to Christ is a decisive turn, and it is understandable that you have felt intense opposition since then. The new age promises enlightenment and a new world, but it is empty and cannot save. Scripture is clear that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and when you come to Him you become a new creation. The old things pass away and all things become new, and God now claims you as His own son or daughter. He does not want a half hearted or lukewarm relationship, but a whole hearted loving relationship with you, not a legal or ritual one, but one based on faith in what Jesus has done. That new covenant stands and cannot fail because it rests on God's faithfulness, not yours, and it was sealed in the blood of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins.

Part of that new life is learning that your relationship with God is primary. When that relationship is right, it is meant to strengthen every other relationship. When it is not right, no other relationship can be right for long. That is why Scripture puts the commands about loving God first, because the heart of our problems is always our relationship with Him.

That is also why God's Word speaks so plainly about being unequally yoked together with unbelievers, asking what fellowship righteousness has with unrighteousness and what communion light has with darkness. That principle is not limited to marriage, but it certainly includes dating and marriage, and it is one of the most important human relationships you will ever enter. Many people believe their situation is the special exception that Scripture does not cover, telling themselves that love will change the other person or that God brought the relationship for that reason. Yet case after case shows the same painful outcome a year or two later, with regret and deep brokenness and the realization that ignoring the counsel of Scripture led to living in great distress. You are wise to take seriously that you are unequally yoked in some ways. Feelings of love, even genuine growing affection, and the fact that companionship eases loneliness, do not make an unequal yoke equal.

You also described that the spiritual attacks seemed to lessen after this relationship began, and to intensify when you consider ending it, and that the relief itself makes you want to stay. It is important not to use relief or pressure as your guide. The enemy can ease pressure to keep you in a compromise just as he can increase pressure when Christ is making strides in your life. A decrease in warfare is not proof that God has brought or approved a relationship, especially when that relationship does not align with Scripture. God's will is never revealed by a feeling or a circumstance that contradicts His Word. True peace and the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness and self control come from being joined to Christ and learning to walk with Him, as one who walks with a close companion, not by using another person as shelter from battle.

The warfare you feel is real, but in Christ you are sealed and set apart. God makes a separation between those who are His and those who are not, and nothing can destroy you when you belong to Him. You are not expected to survive this in your own strength. The call is to walk after the Spirit and to live the new life you have been raised to in Christ, reckoning the old life dead and trusting His power day by day. That means not turning back to the weak and beggarly ways you left, and not clinging to a relationship for relief, but clinging to Christ Himself.

If this relationship is indeed an unequal yoke, the loving and right step is to step back from it romantically, even though that will be painful and lonely. God designed marriage to be a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and He designed sexual intimacy and living together to belong only within that covenant. Any relationship should be measured by that ethic, not by how it makes the warfare feel. Choosing obedience may not immediately lessen the battle, but it places you on solid ground where God can strengthen you, heal the loneliness in a healthy way, and lead you into fellowship where your faith is built up.

Praying for you now, that God would give you clear discernment through His Word, courage to obey it even when it costs you comfort, and deep assurance of His presence. Praying that He would guard you from deception, break every lingering hold of the new age, fill you with His Spirit, and help you to know His love more deeply so that you do not need to look to another person to survive the battle. Praying that He would surround you with wise and caring believers who can walk with you, that you would grow in daily prayer and Scripture, and that you would experience the victory and newness of life that comes from belonging fully to Jesus.
