Relationship

The pain of a love that seems to be withdrawing is a sharp affliction, a darkness of the soul. I hear your longing not merely for the continuance of a bond, but for the renewal of the love your fiancé once felt. This desire, to be a better partner and for the spark of affection to be rekindled, is itself a sign of a love that is not yet extinguished within you. A true and spiritual friend is indeed more to be longed for than the light of the sun, for it is better, as I have often said, to live in darkness than to be without such friends. You rightly perceive the preciousness of this bond.

Yet, let us examine the foundation. The holy Apostle teaches us that love between brethren is not a mere favor but a debt we owe to one another, a debt rooted in our being members of one body. You speak of trying to fix things, but consider, from what source do we draw the power to pay this debt of love? It is not from our own anxious strivings, for human nature is weak. Remember Peter, who in the fervor of his love declared, “Though all men shall be offended, yet will I not be offended,” and how swiftly his confidence crumbled. The Lord allowed it to convict human nature, to show us that without His help, our best resolutions fail. Do not place your reliance solely on your own efforts to be a better partner, for in doing so you may be laying a foundation of sand.

Where then must your hope be fixed? Not on the shifting affections of a man, even one dearly loved, nor on the urgency of a day or two before a journey. The Apostle urges us to seek the things that are above, where Christ is, for our life is hidden with Him in God. When Christ, who is your life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with Him in glory. Is your inner peace merely a candle that gutters with every wind of human emotion, or is it anchored in the unchangeable love of the One who took on our flesh for no other cause than love for mankind? He became a merciful and faithful High Priest to make reconciliation for our sins. Will He not also give you the grace for the reconciliation you seek, if it be according to His will?

I counsel you, therefore, not to clutch at love with a desperate and fearful hand, but to open your hand in prayer and entrust this relationship to God. Make room for Christ in the very center of this trial. Your desire for his love is natural, for nothing produces love so much as knowing one is deeply loved. But let your prayer be transformed. Do not merely petition, "Lord, restore his love for me," but also, "Lord, let our life be hid in You, for there alone is true and lasting union found." For if your life is hid in God, then even this earthly bond can be restored, not as an idol, but as a reflection of that higher, undying benefit. Let us pray not for a hurried step towards better, but for a deep and abiding step towards the One who heals all lovesick hearts and grants a peace the world cannot give. May He quiet your soul, guide your words, and direct the heart of your fiancé, not through your strength, but through His merciful and faithful care.

I hear the urgency in your heart as you face this moment, and I want to encourage you not to let panic set the tone. The deepest need in any relationship is not just to patch things up or to recapture a feeling that seems to be slipping away. The Scripture points us to a love that is far deeper than the love that rises and falls with circumstances or human effort.

There is a kind of love that is purely self-giving, a love that does not seek its own way, that suffers long and is kind. That love is not manufactured by our own determination to be a better partner. It is the fruit of the Spirit. When you are anchored in that, you are drawing from a well that will not run dry, regardless of how someone else responds to you.

Often we try frantically to fix one relationship while the central one remains neglected. Your relationship with God is the root. When your life is hidden in Christ, when you are walking in a conscious, loving communion with Him, the love He sheds abroad in your heart begins to shape every other relationship. You stop trying to earn love or prove your worth, and you start giving the kind of steady, patient love that believes all things and hopes all things.

Do not be swayed by the thought that you alone must create a lasting change in the next two days. Instead, turn your gaze to Jesus. Remember the freshness of your first love for Him. As your heart responds to His everlasting love for you, that divine love will begin to flow through you, calming your fears and quieting the desperation. That is what grounds you, whether your fiancé stays or goes. Let His love be perfected in your heart right now, and trust Him with the days ahead.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer during this tender and urgent season in your relationship. It is a sacred trust to lift your fiancé and your future together before the Lord, and we have done so with hearts full of hope and intercession. We prayed that you would be strengthened to be the partner God calls you to be—that His grace would soften every word, every action, and every moment between you. We asked the Father to rekindle in your fiancé’s heart the deep love he once felt, and to reveal to both of you the path forward in unity and peace. We also lifted up the timing of his trip, asking that even in separation, God would work powerfully to draw your hearts closer and prepare a way for healing.

If the Lord has moved in your relationship since you shared your request—if there has been reconciliation, restored communication, or even quiet confirmation in your spirit—we would love to hear a praise report so we can rejoice with you. If, however, the situation remains unresolved or feels heavier still, please share it again as a new request. We are committed to continuing with you in prayer, believing that God hears every cry and works all things for His glory and your good.

May the Lord bless you with wisdom, patience, and courage as you seek Him together. May His peace guard your hearts and His love guide your steps. We pray all these things in the powerful name of Jesus.
