Beloved Servant
I have been trying to reconcile some estranged relationships in the past month or so and it has been a difficult process and I think God is now directing me to stop reaching out to these people. Please pray for me about this. Thank you.

We hear the weight in your request and we commend you for seeking reconciliation, for this desire reflects the heart of God toward us. We know how painful and exhausting it can be to reach out again and again when relationships remain estranged, and we want to lift you up before the Lord for wisdom, peace, and healing.

Scripture calls us to be peacemakers, as Jesus said Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God Matthew 5:9, and to pursue forgiveness with a tender heart, as it is written And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32. We are also taught to forgive as the Lord forgave us Colossians 3:13 and that God has given us the ministry of reconciliation 2 Corinthians 5:18. At the same time, the Word gives us important balance and wisdom for when the other person is not ready or willing to be reconciled. It says If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18. This shows us that our responsibility is to do what is right and peaceable as far as it depends on us, but reconciliation requires the willing heart of both parties and cannot be forced by one alone.

If you are sensing the Lord directing you to pause in reaching out, we encourage you to seek Him earnestly for clear wisdom and to trust His leading. We are told Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. And if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him James 1:5. Sometimes the most loving and godly step is to step back, to continue to pray from a distance, to keep your heart free from bitterness, and to entrust these people and the outcome fully to God, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7. Pausing contact does not mean you stop forgiving or stop loving, it can mean you are giving space for God to work in their hearts as He continues to work in yours.

We notice your request speaks of God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to gently and lovingly address this because it is central to our faith and to our prayers. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. And Scripture declares There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is only through Jesus, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we have access to God and confidence that He hears our prayers. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to place your trust fully in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing He died for your sins and rose again, and to come to God the Father in His name.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You see the effort and tears poured into seeking reconciliation and You see the weariness and confusion that has come from this difficult process. We ask You to grant clear wisdom and discernment about when to speak and when to be still, and to give peace that surpasses understanding in this decision to pause reaching out. Heal any wounds of rejection, disappointment, or grief, and help our friend to fully forgive as You have forgiven us, keeping the heart soft and free from bitterness. We pray for each of those estranged loved ones, that You would work in their hearts, draw them to Yourself, and if it is Your will, bring reconciliation in Your perfect timing and way. Help us all to rest in Your sovereignty and to trust that You are working for good even when relationships remain broken. We ask that You make Your will unmistakably clear and that You comfort and strengthen this one with Your presence each day. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray for these individuals by name before the Lord even as you pause direct contact, to remain open to the Holy Spirit if He prompts you to reach out again in the future, and to stay rooted in fellowship and the Word so your heart remains encouraged. God is faithful to guide you and to be your peace while you wait on Him.

We have been thinking about your request and how weighty this season has been. Trying to mend estranged relationships takes real courage, and it can be exhausting when your efforts aren't met in the same way. It makes sense you are asking God for clarity about when to keep reaching out and when to step back.

One thing that has helped others is remembering that forgiveness and reconciliation aren't the same. You can choose to forgive and wish someone well before God, even while reconciliation, which needs willingness and trust from both sides, may not be possible right now. Sensing God leading you to pause your outreach doesn't mean you have failed or stopped loving them. It can be a wise way to honor both their boundaries and your own peace.

If it would help, consider giving yourself a clear pause for a season. Write down what you feel God is showing you, share that discernment with a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you, and let them walk with you in that decision. You can continue to entrust these people to the Lord in prayer without feeling you must initiate contact to prove your care.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Grant quiet confidence as they listen for Your leading, healing where there has been hurt, and wisdom for each relationship. Guard their heart from guilt or bitterness and keep these loved ones in Your care. Lead each step forward in Your peace. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your burden has been laid before the Lord and it is a tender thing to desire reconciliation where there has been estrangement. The very longing to see breaches healed is itself a mark of grace, for our God is the God of peace and He has prepared everything that is necessary for a perfect reconciliation between Himself and sinners through Christ. He has committed unto His people the word of reconciliation, and to have a heart that seeks peace with others shows that you have tasted that peace with God.

Yet the way of peace is not always smooth, and you have found it a difficult process. Remember the word of Job, He knows the way that you take. When you have been tried, you shall come forth as gold. The Lord knows which way you should go, and He sees not only your outward actions but the restraints and desires of your heart. If this trial has been as fire, take courage, for the rod is one of the tokens of the child of God. If you go into the fire as gold, you shall come forth as gold, proved and assayed and warranted pure. Though you may sink in deep mire where there is no standing, you may still go down with your eyes towards the hills from whence comes your help.

There are times when to continue to press forward would be to strive without wisdom, and to be still is itself an act of faith. Our Lord said to one who had found mercy, Your faith has saved you, go in peace. That word was not for a moment only, but to last her all her life. So I pray you may hear the same voice now. Go in peace to your ordinary duties, to your home and calling, whatever it may be. Go in peace among those who may not understand you, not disturbed and fluttered, but with your heart resting in God. It is heaven begun below to possess the peace of God which passes all understanding, and that peace should be the continual portion of all believers.

I will pray for you, that the Lord will give you clear discernment to know when to speak and when to be silent, when to reach out and when to wait upon Him. I will pray that He who sees your tears and hears your prayers will keep you from going back to old wounds in a way that would dishonor Him, and that He will enable you to go forth unto Him, finding your rest and your witness in Christ alone. May He guard your heart from bitterness and fill you with that quiet assurance which comes from being reconciled to God through the blood of His Son. May you be able to leave these dear ones, though estranged, in His hands, trusting that He who knows the end from the beginning will do what is right and best.

Go in peace, then, not in the peace of circumstances made smooth, but in the peace of one who is kept by the God of peace.

There are some people who have been praying for me who would still like me and my mother to be reconciled. I don't really want to be associated with my mother as she has broken the law in more than one way.
