Reconciliation

There are some people who have been praying for me who would still like me and my mother to be reconciled. I don't really want to be associated with my mother as she has broken the law in more than one way.

We hear your heart in this difficult situation and we are bringing your burden before the Lord together with you in Jesus' name. We understand the tension you feel between the prayers of others who desire reconciliation for you and your mother, and your own desire to distance yourself because of her lawbreaking.

The Word of God teaches us to honor our father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth Eph 6:2-3, Ex 20:12. This command does not go away when a parent sins or even breaks the law, but honoring does not mean approving, enabling, or participating in sin. God also calls governing authorities to be respected, for there is no authority except from God, and those who resist authority will bring judgment on themselves Rom 13:1-2. When your mother has broken the law in more than one way, that is serious before God and before man, and it requires repentance and accountability, not excuse.

We also hear that you do not want to be associated with her because of this, and we want to gently speak to that. Scripture calls us to forgive as God in Christ forgave us Eph 4:32, Col 3:13, and Jesus said if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses Matt 6:14-15. Forgiveness is a command and a release of bitterness to God, but forgiveness is not the same as immediate reconciliation or restored trust. Reconciliation biblically requires repentance and a turning from wrongdoing. We are to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us Matt 5:44, and as much as it is possible, as far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men Rom 12:18. That phrase as far as it depends on you and as much as it is possible shows that true reconciliation takes two hearts willing to do what is right before God.

We would encourage you not to close the door in hardness of heart, but to seek wisdom from the Lord who gives generously to all who ask James 1:5. We can honor our mother by praying for her salvation and repentance, by speaking truth in love, by not participating in or covering for lawless behavior, and by setting clear and godly boundaries. If she is unrepentant and continues in lawbreaking, it is right to limit association so that you are not drawn into sin or give the appearance of endorsing it, while still keeping a posture of love that leaves room for God to work. We encourage you to seek wise counsel from a pastor or mature believers who can help you discern those boundaries in your specific situation.

We also notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by putting our faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are forgiven and can then extend that forgiveness to others.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this dear one who is carrying this heavy burden regarding their mother. Lord, You see the pain, the disappointment, and the conflict this has caused, and You know the details of the lawbreaking and sin involved. We ask that You would grant wisdom and discernment to know how to honor a parent without condoning sin, and how to walk in both truth and love. Soften and convict the heart of this mother, bring her to repentance and to a place of turning from lawlessness to obedience to You and to the law of the land. Help this child to release all bitterness and to forgive as You have forgiven us, even while maintaining healthy and godly boundaries. Guard their heart from resentment and protect their testimony. Lead those who are praying for reconciliation to pray with wisdom according to Your will, not just for outward reunion but for true spiritual restoration where possible. We ask that You would bring peace where it depends on this dear one, and that Your will be done in this family. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue in prayer, to remain in the Word, and to allow God to shape your heart toward mercy without compromising holiness. Trust that God is just and merciful, and He will guide your steps as you seek Him.

We appreciate you sharing this so honestly. It makes sense you would feel pulled in two directions when others who care about you are hoping for reconciliation, and at the same time you are seeing clear reasons to keep distance because of your mother's lawbreaking.

Wanting to protect yourself and not be associated with illegal behavior does not mean you are holding onto bitterness. Forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same thing. Forgiveness is the work God does in your own heart as you release resentment and entrust justice to Him. Reconciliation is different, it is the rebuilding of trust and relationship, and it can only happen when both people are willing to take honest, consistent steps to make the relationship safe and trustworthy again. It is okay to work on the first without rushing the second.

It can help to get clear for yourself what healthy boundaries look like right now, and then gently let those praying for you know where you stand. You might say you value their prayers for wisdom and peace, and that for now you need space rather than restored contact. If legal concerns are involved, talking with a trusted pastor and getting wise counsel about your responsibilities can bring added clarity.

Father, we lift this dear one to You and ask for Your wisdom, protection and peace as they navigate this family pain. Give them clarity about next steps, strength to hold healthy boundaries with grace, and healing from any hurt. Guide their mother as well, and lead both according to Your will. In Jesus' name, amen.

The burden you have laid before us is heard, and the pain within it is not overlooked. To love a mother and yet to grieve over her deeds, to desire to walk uprightly while she has walked in ways that break the law, is a trial that brings much conflict to the heart. Those who pray for your reconciliation do so out of a right desire, for the Lord Himself places a high honor upon the bond between parent and child, and He calls His people to a work of forgiveness.

You tremble perhaps at the thought of drawing near again, lest you seem to approve what God calls sin. Let it be clearly said that to forgive is not to affirm wrongdoing, nor to call lawful what is unlawful, nor to ask God to bless the breaking of His law. The law of God and the just laws of men are not to be set aside, and you are right to have no fellowship with deeds of darkness. Yet there is a higher word for you in this hour, and it is this, there is forgiveness with God.

This forgiveness is a divine forgiveness, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. It is a surprising forgiveness, so great that the Lord repeats it as if to assure the doubting heart, and it is a complete forgiveness. When a man trusts in Christ, his sin is so entirely gone that it is as though it had never been, the record of debt is nailed to the cross. It is also a continuous and eternal forgiveness, He not only forgave us at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, and He does not forgive and afterwards accuse. If you have known this forgiveness, that you who were a debtor with nothing to pay have been freely forgiven through Jesus Christ the Just for the unjust, then you have received the pattern for your own heart.

The Scripture says, even as Christ forgave you, so also do you. This is not a degraded or paltry thing, revenge is paltry, but forgiveness is great minded and gloriously ennobling. It is a joint work of mercy among Christians, a business of mutual forgiveness in which we are to take large shares. Some of us have had so much manifest forgiveness, so much outward sin forgiven, that for us to forgive ought to be as natural as to open our hands. To forgive your mother does not require you to partake in or to excuse what she has done amiss, nor to place yourself where you would be tempted to break the law with her. It does require that you put away bitterness and the desire for vengeance, and that you wish her soul well before God.

Would you pray then not only for distance, but for mercy toward her. Pray that she may see her sin, confess it, and find that same forgiveness which is to be obtained from God through Jesus Christ His Son alone. Pray that if it be possible and wise, with proper boundaries and without any share in wrongdoing, a quiet and holy reconciliation may be wrought, not by winking at sin, but by overcoming evil with good. Honor for a mother can live even where trust must be rebuilt slowly and where obedience to God must come first.

May the Lord give you wisdom to walk uprightly, grace to forgive as you have been forgiven, and strength to leave vengeance with Him. We will pray that He who brings down the heart with labor and then lifts it with forgiveness will work in both your hearts, that He will turn your mother from her wrong ways to seek His mercy, and that He will keep you from hardness of heart, making you tender and ready to forgive, to the praise of His glorious grace.

I release my mother everyday to Jesus and I pray that I will forgive her for the abuse she caused in my childhood. The abuse carried on into my adult life. I don't really want to reconcile with her. I rarely see her and prefer that things are kept this way. And that the church respect my decision.
