Proverbs, Chapter 26

26:1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, So honor is not seemly for a fool.

26:2 As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, So the curse that is causeless does not come.

26:3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the back of fools.

26:4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or else you will also be like him.

26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, Or else he will be wise in his own eyes.

26:6 He who sends a message by the hand of a fool Cuts off [his own] feet, [and] drinks crime.

26:7 [As] the legs hang loose from a cripple: So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

26:8 As one who binds a stone in a sling, So is he who gives honor to a fool.

26:9 [As] a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkard, So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

26:10 [As] an archer that wounds all, So is he who hires a fool and he who hires those who pass by.

26:11 As a dog that returns to his vomit, [so is] a fool that repeats his folly.

26:12 Do you see a man wise in his own conceit? There is more hope of a fool than of him.

26:13 The sluggard says, There is a lion in the way; A lion is in the streets.

26:14 [As] the door turns on its hinges, So does the sluggard on his bed.

26:15 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; It wearies him to bring it again to his mouth.

26:16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit Than seven men who can render a reason.

26:17 He who passes by, [and] is furious with strife not belonging to him, Is [like] one who takes a dog by the ears.

26:18 As a lunatic who casts firebrands, Arrows, and death,

26:19 So is the man who deceives his fellow man, And says, Am I not joking?

26:20 For lack of wood the fire goes out; And where there is no whisperer, contention ceases.

26:21 [As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to inflame strife.

26:22 The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts.

26:23 Fervent lips and a wicked heart Are [like] an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.

26:24 He who hates dissembles with his lips; But he lays up deceit inside him:

26:25 When he speaks fair, don't believe him; For there are seven disgusting things in his heart:

26:26 Though [his] hatred covers itself with guile, His wickedness will be openly shown before the assembly.

26:27 Whoever digs a pit will fall in it; And he who rolls a stone, it will return on him.

26:28 A lying tongue hates those whom it has wounded; And a flattering mouth works ruin.

Like a thornbush in a drunkard's hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool (Proverbs 26:9).

The 26th chapter of Proverbs is one of my personal favorites. It's full of graphic, vivid, wildly-descriptive word-pictures demonstrating the full spectrum of Proverbial wisdom. There's some true comedic entertainment value in this chapter, if you really give it a good listen!

But verse 9 definitely sobers me up, when it comes to the application and communication of the Proverbs' wisdom for 21st Century context. I realize that I need to keep this verse firmly in mind throughout the course of my Proverbs 365 campaign -- least I fall into the role of the fool, wildly brandishing my "thornbush of wisdom" with the precision of an angry washed-up drunk.

You see, the Proverbs really do have power. They tap into deep, God-given wisdom -- and that's some pretty incredible stuff. But if it's not handled with skill -- or at least with some degree of caution -- it can be highly dangerous, like a toddler with an assault rifle. Let's just briefly consider Proverbs 18:9, for example. If you said, "One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys" to a 35-year-old bachelor, living rent-free with his parents and spending his days playing video games in the basement, it might feel a bit critical or challenging -- but probably in a good-way... But if you said, "One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys" to a young family-man who just lost his job a week previously and who was still working through some depression about the whole thing while building up his courage and his resources to go out job-hunting -- well, the quote will probably not have the desired effect (assuming that it was intended as a positive challenge) and it will probably not serve as a relationally-building moment...

We can cause a lot of pain to others if we go about foolishly quoting Proverbs to everyone we meet, without some degree of consideration for audience, timing, and placement of such Proverbial wisdom. And in addition to hurting others, we can also do a lot of damage to ourselves. I mean, think about it: If a drunk guy is swinging around a thornbush -- who's probably going to get the most pokes, scratches, and gouges out of the deal, ultimately? Will it be our friends and families who are likely to scatter to the four winds when they see us start out on a rampage? Or will we be hurting ourselves more than anything? Truth is it's actually both. But as you can see, it's worthwhile to consider what poorly-considered Proverbial wisdom can do.

I read the proverbs they give you common understanding to resolve your every day problems, and it guide us what happen if you say something very foolishly, God want us to be wise always because the spirit of the Lord is within us,

Do you know how to pray? Read this powerful compilation of Spurgeon, Ryle, Bunyan and others. Includes titles such as Continue in Prayer, Hindrances to Prayer, and What True Prayer Is. This and other resources are now integrated into the Virtual Prayer Partner that you can interact with.
As I read this chapter I was reminded instantly of how we are to love the sinner but incessantly hate sin. I was compelled to realize that we can sometimes do more damage than good if we don't bridle our tongues like the donkey and be self disciplined like the horse and most of all use wisdom as only God generates wisdom. Let us be wise in Him and in Him alone. I forget where the scripture is that we resolve ourselves to Him and He directs our paths. He is a just and merciful God and by allowing Him to have the reigns of our life we gain life from Him. How marvelous is that. May I truly be allowed this day in the Awesome name of Jesus to be one of HIs true worshippers. Thank you Jesus for granting this one request.

26.15 A sluggard buries his hand in a dish. What an idea for a person to be so lazy and do not want to work. Lots of people are able body to work but do not want to. May God help them find something to do.

Please do not dig a pit .. because you might fall into it. 26.27 How many time we see people doing in to others so they may be tricked and fall in it. Specially at work. Coworkers love to make themselves see better than anyone else in front of the boss. This is so unchristian like behaviour that God hates. Making others look bad so they can be promoted to higher positions. Please do not roll a stone because it may fall into you. How wise are this words written thousands of years ago and now it is working just as the day we see. Dear Lord, please help us to be humble and help others instead of putting huge stones into their path. Let us pray for their souls because they also are lost and their heart is far away from you. In Jesus name. Amen

Do not answer a fool according to his folly. As a Christian witness we should not engage in discussions about the end of the world, the coming economic earthquake or any idol worship. People love to raise issues about religion a politics to let us fall into their folly. Answer with the words of God. The Bible is a rock in which fools hit themselves in the head and do not understand the eternal truths that Gods word is telling us. Dear Lord help those who are fallen apart from you . In Jesus name. Amen

I offer to you Oh lord my God, even this day, my thoughts, my ideas my goals. To serve others and to be all you want me to be. This is to reflect my profound love for you. For what you have done for all of us and for those who trust and believe in your word. May my suffering be endured for your glory and honor. Please help me to avoid this one. A lying tongue hates those he has wounded. 26.28 May my mouth be to glorify your holy name. Never ever to lye or deceive. May my heart be always ready to love you and your word obey. I want to do what you ask, I want to go where you need me most. May be the homeless shelters, feeding centers or soup kitchens. May visit the sick, the elderly or those who are in jail. Please lord Jesus. Send more chaplains to preach to those who are lost and heading to hell. In Jesus name. Amen
