Praying for my mom

There is no way around it. Longing for a mother who will not or cannot draw near is a lonely ache, and the Lord hears every word of that cry. He does not shame you for wanting her. The command to honor a mother is real, but so is the pain when that bond is silent or broken.

When Jesus was told that his mother and brothers were outside wanting to speak with him, he asked, Who is my mother and who are my brothers? Then he stretched out his hand toward his disciples and said, Behold, my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. Jesus was not dishonoring his mother. He was opening a wider family around himself. That means you are not left with only the relationship you are missing. You have a people in him, and you may come directly to him. No one else has to carry your request. The door is open, and the throne of grace welcomes the desperate.

Let prayer and the word feed your spirit the way food feeds the body. When Jesus was burdened, prayer was his place of strength, and it can be yours too. Bring the little you have, like the five loaves and two fish, and let him do what you cannot. Ask him to work in your mother's heart and to open a door for communication, but do not let your safety depend only on whether she changes. His presence surrounds you. Even in a place of discouragement or defeat, the Lord is in this place.

Stay solid in faith, love, and patience. Not because you feel strong, but because he is faithful. You are seen, and you are not forgotten.
