Prayer for wife

Asteondion

Servant
Please pray for my wife. She is cursing all day and night, and constantly making demands and yelling at me. She is not a nice person to live with. I am constantly walking on eggshells and it feels like one day she’s going to do something crazy. As time goes on, she seems to be testing the limits of what she is able to get away with. She does not fear God’s punishment for her. I keep warning her that she will reap what she sows, and she hates when I say that, but I have to warn her. She spits in my face a few times a year, she is mocking my friend who passed away a few years ago, and she is constantly looking for a way to hurt me. She does this for small reasons, like when there are small drops of water on the floor in the restroom. She thinks that’s a good enough reason to curse and yell.

We hear the heaviness and pain in your heart and we join with you in bringing your wife and your marriage before the Lord. Living with constant cursing, demands, yelling, and walking on eggshells is exhausting and fearful, and to be spit upon and mocked, even mocking a friend who has passed away, is deeply wounding. We grieve with you over this and we take seriously your concern that she is testing limits and could do something more harmful.

We want to remind you of God's design for marriage. Marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, created to reflect Christ and the church. The husband is called to love his wife even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it, Ephesians 5:25, and to dwell with your wife according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel, 1 Peter 3:7, and not to be bitter against her, Colossians 3:19. The wife is called to respect her husband, Ephesians 5:33, and to have a gentle and quiet spirit. When cursing and corrupt speech proceeds from the mouth it grieves the Lord, for we are told let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up, Ephesians 4:29, and out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing, my brothers, these things ought not to be so, James 3:10. Spitting in your face, yelling over small drops of water on the floor, seeking ways to hurt you, and mocking the memory of your friend are not small flaws, they are sin that needs repentance. The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom, Proverbs 9:10, and when a person does not fear God she will not restrain her tongue or her anger.

We also want to gently speak to how you are warning her. It is true that whatever a man sows, that he will also reap, Galatians 6:7, and it is loving to warn someone of the consequences of sin. Yet we encourage you to examine your heart as you speak that truth, that it be done not as a threat in the moment of conflict but as speaking truth in love, Ephesians 4:15. A harsh word stirs up anger, but a soft answer turns away wrath, Proverbs 15:1. When you feel provoked, do not repay evil for evil, Romans 12:17, but overcome evil with good, Romans 12:21. Love is patient and is kind, 1 Corinthians 13:4, and that patience does not mean accepting abuse, but it means not returning cursing for cursing while you set godly boundaries.

We are concerned for your safety and your peace. For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control, 2 Timothy 1:7. Living in fear that she will do something crazy is not what God intends for your home. We strongly encourage you to not walk this road alone. Please seek godly counsel quickly from your pastor or elders, and if needed a biblical Christian counselor. If you are ever in physical danger, it is wise and biblical to seek help and to create safety while you pursue reconciliation. The church is given for such help, and if a spouse remains in unrepentant sin, Jesus teaches us to bring others along to help restore, Matthew 18:15-17. It is better to dwell in a desert land than with a contentious and fretful woman, Proverbs 21:19, which shows how seriously God views a contentious tongue, but God also hates the breaking of the covenant, Malachi 2:16, so we pray for healing and repentance, not for quick division.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only by His name that we have access to God. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you have not already, confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead and you will be saved, Romans 10:9. It is through Jesus that your prayers are heard and through Him that your wife can be truly transformed. Only He can give a new heart.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, asking for Your mercy on this marriage. Lord, You see every curse, every yell, every spit, every mocking word, and You see this husband's wounded and weary heart. We ask that You would convict our brother's wife of her sin and bring her to repentance, that You would give her a new heart that fears You and a mouth that speaks grace instead of cursing. Soften her heart, Lord, and remove the desire to hurt and to test limits. We pray that You would heal the memories of mocking and contempt and bring godly sorrow that leads to repentance. Father, we lift up this husband, give him wisdom, strength, and self-control, help him to love as Christ loves, to speak truth in love, and to not return evil for evil. Guard him from fear and fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, Philippians 4:7. Provide him with wise, biblically grounded counsel and protection, and lead both of them to walk in Your ways. We ask that this marriage would be restored to honor You, that their home would become a place of peace and respect. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue in daily prayer for her, to stay in the Word, to pursue fellowship with mature believers who can stand with you, and to keep lovingly holding out the gospel to her, that she might see Christ in you and be drawn to repentance. We are praying with you for her salvation and for your endurance and wisdom.

We are grateful you reached out and shared what life at home has been like. Living with constant cursing, yelling and demands, feeling like you are walking on eggshells, and being spat on and mocked, is exhausting and frightening. It makes sense you feel on edge and worried about what might happen next.

We hear how much you want your wife to understand the harm her words and actions cause, and how you have tried to warn her. When tension is that high, warnings in the moment often make things more volatile rather than safer, even when your concern is right.

When you can, it would be good to talk confidentially with a safe person outside the home, a trusted pastor and also a counselor or advocate who understands domestic abuse, to think through a safety plan and next steps for wisdom and protection. You do not have to sort this alone, and having someone who knows your situation can help you consider options calmly when things are not heated. If you ever feel threatened, try to step to a safer place and get help.

Father, we lift this husband to You and ask for Your protection and peace over him. Give him wisdom, clarity and safe support around him, and guard his heart from fear and despair. Lead him to trustworthy help and show him each step to take. Bring healing where there has been hurt and let him know Your nearness and care. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your sorrow has been laid before the Lord and before His people, and we have heard the heaviness of your trial. To live in a home where the tongue is as a constant scourge, where cursing and yelling follow upon small provocations, where spitting and mocking and the seeking of ways to wound have become familiar, is a grievous affliction. To walk upon eggshells and to fear what may be done next is a burden no man should bear alone, and we do not take it lightly.

Scripture sets before us what marriage was meant to be. It is not a mere contract between two persons maintaining their own separate lives as if it were a condition of the bargain. In a true marriage the two become one. The Lord says, I am married unto you, and this speaks of a blessed choice and a bond cemented by mutual love. Christ has made a household whereof He and His Church are the companion parts, He the Husband and His Church the spouse. His love to His spouse is the pattern for every husband, for we are told, Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church and gave Himself for it. That love did not shrink from any loving work which belongs to a faithful husband, and it loved not because the spouse was lovely in herself, but that He might make her so.

This mystery of Christ and His Church shows you both the beauty of what God intends and the way you are called to walk even in this hard season. You are right to know that God sees all and that what a man sows that shall he also reap, for the Lord is just and will not hold sin as a light thing. Yet take care how that truth is spoken in your home. A warning given in haste or in heat, even when true, can become a weapon rather than a witness, and can harden the heart it was meant to soften. Truth must be spoken in love and with tears, as Christ speaks to His own, not as a lash but as an invitation to repentance. Your wife hates to hear that word, which may show that her conscience is not yet at peace, and she has need not only of warning but of your steady, patient, Christlike love and your earnest prayer that God would give her a new heart and a fear of Himself.

We would counsel you, brother in Christ, to not carry this alone. The marriage bond is one of unity, and when that unity is broken by sin and unkindness, the help of faithful shepherds is needed. Go to your pastor or elders, men who know you both and who hold the Scriptures faithfully, and open to them what you have shared here. Let them know the cursing, the spitting, the mocking of your friend who has died, the anger over small matters such as water upon the floor, and your fear that she tests limits and may do something yet more grievous. You need wise, godly counsel close at hand, both for your protection and for her good. If you are in fear for your safety, do not hide that fear. Seek help at once from those who can intervene with wisdom and, if needed, provide a place of safety while counsel is sought.

In the home, commit yourself to that which belongs to you before God. Pray daily for your wife by name, that the Lord who alone can save would show her her need of Christ, who must be received as the Lamb before there can be any true marriage between the soul and Him. Ask Him to make you like the Bridegroom who loves with a self giving love, who does not repay reviling with reviling. This does not mean you must accept abuse as if it were right. It means you must not return evil for evil, you must set a guard upon your own lips, you must be sober and watchful, and you must let your conduct be such that it commends the gospel even when words are rejected.

We will pray for you and with you.

O Lord, our God, who hast ordained marriage to set forth the union of Christ and His Church, look in mercy upon this home. Thou seest the strife and the bitter words, the disrespect and the wounding that is done. Have mercy upon this wife and turn her heart to fear Thee and to repent of sin. Have mercy upon this husband and give him wisdom, patience, courage and holiness, that he may love as Christ loves, speak truth in love, and walk in uprightness. Raise up faithful pastors and brethren to come alongside them, to counsel and to guard and to guide toward peace. Keep this household from further harm and bring forth, in Thy time, that which honors Christ. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is our salvation, Amen.

Continue in prayer, continue in the Word, and continue under the care of your local church. You are not forgotten.

My wife is constantly cursing at me and wishing death on me, she even prays for bad things to happen to me. I think she has a serious mental illness. I was choking on food last night and she was yelling at me while I was choking, this must be demonic possession. Her behavior is getting worse.

My wife is constantly cursing and screaming at me, I am exhausted. She has no respect for me, and is consistently trying to control what I’m doing. When things aren’t exactly how she wants them, she has a rage episode and she wants to argue. I am so sick of this.
