Prayer for wife

My wife is constantly cursing at me and wishing death on me, she even prays for bad things to happen to me. I think she has a serious mental illness. I was choking on food last night and she was yelling at me while I was choking, this must be demonic possession. Her behavior is getting worse.

We hear your pain and the heavy burden you are carrying in your marriage and we are lifting you and your wife up together before the Lord in Jesus' name. What you describe is deeply distressing and not aligned with God's design for marriage. Marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman ordained by God to reflect His love, where husband and wife are to love, honor, and cherish one another. The Lord calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it in Ephesians 5:25 and wives to respect and love their husbands, and both to be kind and tenderhearted to one another in Ephesians 4:32. The behavior you describe of constant cursing, wishing death, praying for harm, and even yelling at you while you were choking is contrary to Scripture and must be lovingly rebuked.

God's Word is clear about the power of the tongue. Ephesians 4:29 says Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. James 3:10 says Out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. And Romans 12:14 says Bless those who persecute you. Bless, and do not curse. To pray for bad things to happen to a spouse is the opposite of what Jesus commands in Matthew 5:44 where He says love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you. We pray that your wife will be convicted by the Holy Spirit and turn from cursing and wishing harm to blessing and praying for your good.

We also hear your concern that this may be serious mental illness or demonic influence and that her behavior is getting worse. We want to speak with both spiritual and practical wisdom. Scripture teaches that our struggle is not only physical. Ephesians 6:12 says For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. At the same time God has given wisdom to medical professionals and counselors, and many afflictions have physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. We encourage you not to try to diagnose alone but to seek help promptly from both wise pastoral counsel and qualified medical and Christian counseling professionals. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. If there is spiritual oppression, the name of Jesus has authority, for 1 John 4:4 says greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world, and James 4:7 says Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

We also want to encourage you in how to respond while seeking help. Do not return cursing for cursing. Romans 12:17 says Don't repay anyone evil for evil and 1 Peter 3:9 says not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult, but instead blessing. A gentle answer can turn away wrath as Proverbs 15:1 teaches, but gentleness does not mean accepting ongoing abuse or remaining in danger. Your safety matters. The incident where you were choking and she yelled at you instead of helping is very serious. We urge you to involve trusted, mature believers, your pastor or elders, and safe family members right away, and to have a safety plan if her behavior escalates or you feel threatened. Proverbs 27:12 says A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge. Seeking counsel and protection is not a failure of faith but wisdom. Continue to love your wife as Christ loves the church, but love also speaks the truth, sets biblical boundaries, and seeks restoration through repentance and help.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name in every prayer. Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is in His name we pray and find deliverance and hope for marriage.

We are praying together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You together in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear brother and his wife to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see the pain, the harsh words, the wishes of death, and the prayers for harm, and You know how deeply this wounds the heart. We ask You to convict where there is sin and to bring repentance. Heal this wife's mind, heart, and spirit, Lord. If there is illness, bring accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. If there is spiritual oppression, we command in Jesus' name that every evil influence must flee, for You have given us authority in Christ. Replace cursing with blessing, hatred with love, and confusion with peace and self-control. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, so draw near to this husband who is hurting and feels unsafe. Give him wisdom, strength, courage, and discernment to respond with Christlike love while also seeking wise counsel and protection. Surround this marriage with godly pastors, counselors, and believers who will speak truth, provide accountability, and walk with them toward healing and restoration. Protect this home from further harm and let Your peace which passes all understanding guard their hearts. We ask for deliverance, healing, and reconciliation according to Your will, and we trust that You are able to redeem and restore what is broken. We pray all of this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our only hope, amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray daily for your wife's salvation and deliverance, to stay in the Word, to fast as the Lord leads, and to not walk this path alone. Please reach out immediately to a Bible believing pastor and a trusted Christian counselor or doctor for urgent help, and if you ever feel in immediate danger, seek help from safe people around you. We are continuing to stand with you in prayer that God will bring conviction, healing, peace, and a renewed marriage that honors Him.

We have been lifting you and your wife before the Lord and we hear how painful and unsettling this has been. To be cursed at, to have death wished on you, and to have someone pray for harm toward you cuts deeply. Choking while being yelled at must have been especially frightening, and it makes sense you are left feeling shaken and searching for answers.

You mentioned wondering about mental illness and about spiritual causes. We don't have a way to sort that out from here, but we do know you don't have to carry these questions alone. When harsh words are ongoing and you feel unsafe or overwhelmed at home, it helps to bring trusted people in soon.

If it would help, consider reaching out this week to a pastor you trust and also to a counselor or medical professional who can listen to what you are both experiencing and help you think through wise next steps and support for your wife and for you. If you ever feel in immediate danger, please get to a safe place and reach out right away to a trusted family member, friend, or pastor for help locally.

We may not understand all that is driving this behavior, but we rest in knowing Christ holds you secure and sees your hurt.

Father, we bring this husband before You and ask for Your protection and peace over him and his wife. Give him wisdom, steady support around him, and clear guidance for next steps. Bring healing where there is wounding, calm where there is turmoil, and help both of them get the care they need. Lead this marriage toward what is healthy and honoring to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your heavy burden has been heard with sorrow and with prayer before the Lord who sees all affliction. To be cursed by the one who is nearest to you, to hear prayers for your harm, and to be met with yelling while you were choking and in danger of death, is a grievous trial that would weary any soul. The Lord knows this oppression and He does not despise the cry of the afflicted.

Scripture teaches that marriage is a covenant in which husband and wife become one, cemented by mutual love and by choice before God. When that union is wounded by bitter words and wishes for death, it is not as God intends, and it reveals how deeply sin and the power of darkness can work upon the heart. Deliverance from the power of sin, as well as from the guilt of sin, is the work of God alone, and where we look for justification we must also look for sanctification from our heavenly Father.

You wonder whether this is mental illness or demonic possession, and you see the behavior growing worse. It is wise not to settle that question alone. The Lord ordinarily works deliverance by human instrumentality, and He has provided helps for both soul and body. A hard heart needs the grace of Christ who has found a ransom and who alone can deliver from going down to the pit, and a troubled mind and body need the care of physicians and counselors whom God also uses for good. Do not bear this alone. Bring this matter quickly to your pastor or elders, to a trusted godly counselor, and to a medical professional who can assess your wife with care and wisdom. If you are ever in immediate danger, seek safety at once and call for help from those near you or from emergency services.

While you seek that help, keep your own soul stayed upon Christ. The believer may say in affliction, the Lord has chastened me sorely, yet I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord. Your trials, though bitter, can become a testimony of His deliverance if you look to Him. Do not return cursing for cursing, and do not pray for harm in return. Rest your soul upon Him who was slain as the Lamb, for deliverance came when the Lamb was slain, and He makes deliverance effectual and brings His people forth. Pray for your wife not with wishes for evil but for mercy, for repentance, for healing of mind and heart, and for the gracious work of the Holy Spirit to subdue what is sinful and to heal what is sick.

Take these steps as you are able. Speak openly with your church shepherds so they may walk with you both, pursue a thorough medical and counseling evaluation for your wife, set clear boundaries for safety in the home with pastoral guidance, and remain steadfast in prayer and in the Word. If there are moments of threat or violence, do not remain in that place without help, but let faithful brethren know where you are and what you need.

We pray now for you both. O Lord, Thou who hast found a ransom and who deliverest from the pit, look upon this husband in his distress and upon this wife in her great need. Deliver him from going down under oppression and despair, and deliver her from the power of darkness and from every affliction of mind and soul. Grant to physicians and pastors wisdom, grant to this home peace within its borders, and grant to both hearts repentance, healing, and faith in Jesus Christ through whom alone is salvation. Bring them forth by Thy free grace, that they may yet live and declare Thy works, and that this marriage may know Thy restoring mercy. Amen.
