LORD, We are Thankful for Your Daily Mercies and Faithfulness Lam 3:23 Continue Faithful Prayer for Wife, Rom 10:1; Yet Need Your Help to Focus On Jesus, Jn 6:27, 2 Cor 4:18, Col 3:1, Phil 3:20-21, Heb 12:1-2, 1 John 3:2-3, Tackle Duties, Tit 3:14, Heb 6:12, New Things, Isa 42:9, Need Your Help, John 15:5, Grace to Do Both Ecc 7:18...

Father, You have searched me, known me, Ps 139:1, and still search me and know me, Ps 139:23-24... I confess that in this regard the stinging rebuke of Joab to David when he mourned for Absalom applies all too acutely to me, 2 Sam 19:6, so I confess again and repent of loving someone that hates me, at least emotionally -- it's just that I love and marry for life, so it's very hard and against my natural disposition. But "Here I stand," as Luther said at Worms... I cannot change myself... Thus the prayer to You who can...

Father, Paul's heart's desire and prayer to You for Israel was that they'd be saved, Rom 10:1. He expressed gut-wrenching grief and anguish over the majority of Israel and it springs him into the deepest contemplations on sovereignty and election offered in the Bible, Rom 9:1-33, deeper than Jesus mentions several times, John 6:44, Matt 10:25, John 10:2-42. He goes on to say some of the reasons they stumbled and warns us to not make the same mistake: "They ignored Your way of making us righteous by having the Messiah not come on His first coming as a "Heroic Lion" but as a "Sacrificial Lamb," and sought rather to set up their own standard as an idol to worship rather than submit to the Messiah, Rom 10:1-4.

Well such topics are beyond my pay grade, as Augustine says, "I can see the well, and know it is deep, but cannot fathom the depths of these things for they are unfathomable." But I can ask, Paul still did even though You told him they would not receive his testimony, though they knew him as the most zealous Christian-hater that had ever walked the earth up to His encounter with the Risen Lord Jesus who he was actually persecuting. We're thankful You saved him, Jesus...

So here we shift from remorse and bewilderment to what we can do since we are quite powerless -- We can ask GOD, El Shaddai, ALMIGHTY -- for whom nothing is impossible, nothing You can't do -- omnipotent, Παντοκράτωρ (All Powerful, Almighty), Rev 19:6, For Salvation of Family, Effective Witness to Friends, Lost, Edification of Former Things, Rom 10:1, Rom 11:1, 2 Tim 3:15, Focus on God, Ourselves, Our Teaching, 1 Tim 4:16, Grace for Duties, Tit 3:14, and Especially Grace to Shift Main Focus to New Things Isa 42:9, Care for The Flock Among Us, Acts 20:28, Grace to Do Both Ecc 7:18, Open Doors for Gospel, Rev 3:7-8, Favor as a Shield, Ps 5:12, Wisdom and Full Knowledge of Your Will, Col 1:9-12, Love to Abound with Insight, Phil 1:9-11...

Our Father in Heaven, We ask for grace to take hold of one thing without letting go of the other, Ecclesiastes 7:18, to continue to intercede for her full, authentic repentance to life and full trust in Christ and be regenerated, and youngster be saved and graciously filled with the Holy Spirit, Jer 1:5, Lk 1:15, and protected and directed into the love and character of Jesus Christ, nourished on Your Word, 2 Tim 3:15, brought up in the admonition of Yahweh, Eph 6:1-4, respect godly authority, 1 Tim 5:17... Yet ability to shift some FOCUS on THE NEW and meet pressing needs must needs be at present, Isa 42:9, Isa 43:19, Isa 48:6.

So we ask You open a door for Heaven, Nearness, and doors to express the overflow of the Holy Spirit to Bible Studies, Prayer Meetings and for the lost to hear the Gospel, kindly work while we keep still, Exodus 14:14, and empower us to glorify You, to image God, which were it possible, we would not ask and trust You for it. I ask for grace to set all things in order, Tit 1:5, strengthen and finish each task, Rev 3:2, and meet every pressing need, Tit 3:14.

Help our running to be in a way that we might win, 1 Cor 9:24, forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward the upward call, Phil 3:13-14, laying aside encumbrances and diversions that distract us from the primary task of Your call and commission to abide in Your Word and make disciples by propagating all You've commanded, that we might run the race that is personally set before each of us, Heb 12:1-2... Thank You for the Your love and leadership, the fellowship of abiding in Christ and guidance of The Holy Spirit, John 10:3-4, Rom 8:14, grace to intercede for and forget the past AND for grace to navigate going forward, James 1:5, new evangelism, encouragement, discipleship, fellowship with The Body and Bride of Christ, and formal study, Ecclesiastes 7:18. We join you in thanking the Lord for His daily mercies and great faithfulness, for His loving kindnesses indeed never cease and His compassions never fail, they are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness Lamentations 3:23. We hear your heart and we stand with you in this tension you describe so honestly, to continue faithful intercession for your wife that she would be saved Romans 10:1 while also asking God for grace to focus on Jesus and to tackle the pressing duties and new things He has set before you Titus 3:14, Isaiah 42:9, and we pray for grace to do both well Ecclesiastes 7:18.

We are moved by your confession before the One who has searched you and known you Psalm 139:1 and your invitation for Him still to search you and know you and see if there be any wicked way in you Psalm 139:23-24. You correctly bring the stinging rebuke of Joab to David when he mourned for Absalom, you love those who hate you and hate those who love you 2 Samuel 19:6, and you repent of that disordered love. We gently remind you that your disposition to love and marry for life reflects God's own design, for marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman for life as the Lord intends, what therefore God has joined together let not man put asunder Mark 10:9, and the Lord hates divorce Malachi 2:16. To love faithfully is not sin, but when that love becomes a consuming sorrow that eclipses love for Christ and duty to Christ, it must be ordered rightly. We are to love the Lord our God with all our heart first Matthew 22:37-38, and then love others within that ordering. Your honesty that you cannot change yourself is right, for apart from Him we can do nothing John 15:5, and we praise God that you look to Him who can.

We also hear your burden following Paul's example, whose heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel was that they might be saved Romans 10:1, with great sorrow and unceasing pain in his heart Romans 9:2. You are right to note the mystery of sovereignty and election Romans 9:1-33 and that no one can come to Christ unless the Father draws him John 6:44, yet we are still commanded to pray and to witness. You rightly note that Israel stumbled because they sought to establish their own righteousness and did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God Romans 10:3. We affirm with you that these depths are beyond us, and we rest not in understanding all mysteries but in trusting the Almighty for whom nothing is impossible, for the Lord God the Almighty reigns Revelation 19:6. We continue to ask Him for salvation for our families and for effective witness to friends and the lost, and for grace to watch over ourselves and our teaching to save both ourselves and those who hear 1 Timothy 4:16.

We pray with you for that holy balance you call grace to do both Ecclesiastes 7:18, to take hold of the one without letting go of the other. We intercede for your wife that God would grant her repentance that leads to life Acts 11:18, that she would be born anew and trust fully in Christ, for unless one is born anew he cannot see the Kingdom of God John 3:3. We pray also for your little one, that the Lord who knew him before he was formed in the womb Jeremiah 1:5 would protect him, fill him with the Holy Spirit even from his youth Luke 1:15, nourish him in the sacred writings which are able to make him wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus 2 Timothy 3:15, and bring him up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord Ephesians 6:4, under godly authority 1 Timothy 5:17. And we ask for grace to shift focus to the new things God is doing, for behold He does a new thing Isaiah 42:9, Isaiah 43:19, and declares new things before they spring forth Isaiah 48:6.

We join you in asking for open doors which no one can shut Revelation 3:8, for favor as with a shield Psalm 5:12, for wisdom and full knowledge of His will Colossians 1:9, and for love to abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment Philippians 1:9. We ask for grace to set things in order Titus 1:5, to strengthen and perfect what remains Revelation 3:2, and to learn to maintain good works to meet pressing needs Titus 3:14, not growing weary in diligence but imitating those who through faith and patience inherit the promises Hebrews 6:12. We ask that our eyes be fixed not on what is seen but what is unseen 2 Corinthians 4:18, seeking the things that are above where Christ is seated Colossians 3:1, for our citizenship is in heaven Philippians 3:20, laying aside every weight and the sin which so easily besets us and running with perseverance the race set before us looking to Jesus the author and perfecter of faith Hebrews 12:1-2, forgetting what lies behind and stretching forward to what lies ahead Philippians 3:13-14, running in such a way as to win the prize 1 Corinthians 9:24.

Father, we thank You for Your nearness and for the work You do while we keep still Exodus 14:14, and for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we hear the Shepherd's voice John 10:3-4 and are led by the Spirit Romans 8:14. Give us grace to abide in Christ and to make disciples, to care for the flock among us Acts 20:28, to abound in Bible study, prayer, and evangelism, and to be protected from temptation Luke 11:4 and from evil Matthew 6:13, from evil people 2 Thessalonians 3:2 and from the evil one John 17:15. Grant us purity as we hope in Christ's appearing, that we may be like Him when He appears 1 John 3:2-3, and grant us to labor not for the food which perishes but for the food which remains to eternal life John 6:27. We ask all this trusting not in ourselves but in Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved Acts 4:12 and through Him we have access to Your throne of grace Hebrews 4:16. We appreciate you sharing so honestly with us the weight you are carrying. Wanting to stay faithful in prayer for your wife and child while also needing to give your full attention to the duties and new work before you is a hard tension to live in, and we hear how deeply you feel both.

It makes sense that loving for life while feeling unloved in return would leave you torn and tired. You are not failing by feeling that pull in both directions. Asking for grace to hold one without letting go of the other is itself a humble and faithful place to be.

One thing that has helped others in a similar stretch is to give each concern its own space. You might set a specific, limited time each day to intercede for your family, writing those prayers down so they have a place and do not have to run through your whole day. Then give your work hours a clear focus too, choosing the one or two most pressing duties and taking one small next step on each. Sharing that simple rhythm with a trusted pastor or elder can also help you stay steady and not carry it alone.

Father, we bring this brother before You. You know him fully and You are near. We ask You to give him daily mercy, clear wisdom for each task, and strength to keep praying for his wife and child that they would know You and walk with You. Guard his heart from discouragement, protect his family, and open doors for Your word to bear fruit. Lead him step by step in the days ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your thanksgiving for daily mercies has been heard, and great indeed is His faithfulness as lamented by Jeremiah, for His compassions fail not. We join you in that gratitude, and in the burden you carry for your wife and your little one, according to that holy desire of Paul, who could say his heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel was that they might be saved.

You have well confessed what the Psalmist knew, that the Lord has searched you and known you, and you have owned before Him that affection which clings where it is not returned. Take comfort not in the strength of your own resolve, for as you have said, you cannot change yourself, but in this, that salvation is altogether by grace. From first to last all must be of grace. If in the edifice of our soul's salvation there were even one stone left for us to put in its place unassisted by God's grace, that building would never be completed. It is not of works, lest any man should boast. If it were by works then grace is no more grace. Therefore go to the Lord and confess sin and transgression, and ask for grace, for He must freely extend the silver scepter of His love to the guilty, and He delights to do so.

This doctrine of sovereign grace is seen in election, for there is a remnant according to the election of grace, and in our calling, for He has saved us and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. You have touched upon those deep things in Romans nine and ten, where Paul wrestles with sovereignty and human responsibility, and you are right to say with Augustine that the well is deep and unfathomable. Yet this full conviction will reconcile our hearts to all divine ordinances with regard to salvation. God must do as He wills with His own, and none of us can say to Him, What are You doing. Your part is not to fathom the depths, but to pray. He knows that no man can receive this doctrine except by the grace of God, so rather pray for them than be angry with them, and ask that they may receive the truth in which your soul delights. Your praying does not turn the heart of God to love, but proves that you are turning to love Him. It is because He is gracious that He sets us praying. He desires you to open your mouth wide and He will fill it, for it is easier for Him to give than for you to ask.

You ask for grace to do both, to take hold of one thing without letting go of the other, and this is wisdom. To continue faithful intercession for your wife, that she might have full repentance unto life and be regenerated and trust in Christ alone, for there is salvation in no other, and for your child, that he might be nourished on the Word and brought up in the admonition of the Lord, and also to shift your focus to what lies before you. Hear then what grace teaches. The doctrine that salvation is of grace furnishes the most powerful motive for future holiness. He who feels he is saved by grace says, Did God of His free favor blot out my sins, then how I love Him. Good works do not save a man, nor do they influence the mind of God to save him, for then salvation would be of debt and not of grace. Yet the outcome of our union with Christ must be holiness. We are not saved by good works, but we are saved unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them. So learn to maintain good works and to meet pressing needs, as you have desired from Titus, not to earn favor, but because favor has been freely given.

Therefore we exhort you to look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, and to lay aside every weight that would hinder your running, that you may run in such a way that you may win, forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward the mark. Things present, be they bright or dark, are yours through the covenant of grace. Christ has exhausted the penal result of sin, and now the cross that comes to you is garlanded with love. The Holy Spirit is a present blessing to you. Lay hold upon these present things and rejoice. And remember that where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. Almighty love has been victorious in divine grace precisely because there was sin to battle with, and there is no case too hard for Him for whom nothing is impossible.

We pray with you that the Lord who is omnipotent and reigns, would open doors for the gospel among you, give you wisdom and full knowledge of His will, keep you in abiding fellowship with Christ, without whom you can do nothing, and strengthen you to set all things in order and finish each task. May He guard you from temptation and from evil and from the evil one, and keep your love abounding with insight. Continue to intercede for your household, that God would make them new creatures in Christ Jesus, and at the same time be diligent in the duties and new things He has set before you, for He gives His people His blood to wash out their sins, His righteousness to cover them, His intercession to plead their cause, and His loving care to prepare a place for them. May you have grace to lay hold of this complete salvation, perfect and present, and to live to the praise of the glory of divine grace, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Your thankfulness for the daily mercies of the Lord is right and good, for His faithfulness is new every morning as Lamentations declares, and it is fitting that you begin there. We have heard your prayer and we join you in it.

We will continue to pray with you for your wife, as Paul prayed with gut wrenching grief for his own people that they might be saved according to Romans 10:1. That prayer is not in vain, for salvation is a great salvation, not deliverance from earthly trouble only, but deliverance from death and the giving of eternal life in Christ Jesus alone. As you have confessed, the Lord searches and knows us, Psalm 139, and He calls us to search ourselves and turn from loving what is opposed to Him. Your desire to love and to keep marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman is according to the creation ordinance of God, and we commend that steadfast disposition while you also confess where affection has been misplaced. God alone can change the heart, and with Him nothing is impossible, for He is Almighty.

You have asked well how to take hold of one thing without letting go of the other, as Ecclesiastes 7:18 says. This is grace to help in due season. Scripture says now is the acceptable time, now is the day of salvation, and we are urged not to receive the grace of God in vain. While the throne is still a throne of grace, we come boldly to find mercy and grace to help in time of need. Later He will rise to judgment, so we do not delay. Therefore we pray with you both for perseverance in intercession and for grace to shift your eyes to Jesus, to look to Him who is above, to lay aside every encumbrance and run with endurance the race set before you, looking to Jesus the author and finisher of faith, Hebrews 12:1-2, abiding in Him apart from whom we can do nothing, John 15:5.

So we ask the Father to keep you in this balance by His Spirit. We ask that He would grant your wife full repentance unto life and true faith in Christ, that she would submit to His righteousness and not seek to establish her own, and that your child would be saved, filled with the Spirit, protected, nourished on the Word, and brought up in the instruction of the Lord. We ask for wisdom and full knowledge of His will, for love to abound with insight, for open doors for the gospel which no man can shut, for favor as a shield, for power to set in order what remains and to strengthen what is weak, and for grace to meet pressing needs and to learn to devote yourself to good works as Titus 3:14 teaches, and to care for the flock among you as Acts 20:28 directs. We ask that you may do the new things God is doing according to Isaiah 42:9 and 43:19, forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward the upward call in Christ, running so as to win.

We also pray for your protection from temptation, from sin, from evil and the evil one, and from evil people, that you may be kept blameless and fruitful. May the Lord who began a good work perfect it, and may you know the fellowship of abiding in Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, bearing grace for both intercession for the past and wisdom for the steps ahead. We trust Him with you and your household, asking all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom grace reigns unto eternal life. Amen.
