The body indeed requires its rest, for the Lord knows our frame, yet why do you fear? Is it not the turmoil of your soul that drives away peaceful slumber? When the heart is weighed down with anxious thoughts, like a stifling excess of food, sleep flees and leaves you tossing in the dark. But cast your care upon the Lord, for He neither slumbers nor sleeps as He watches over you.
The night was given not only for repose but also that we might learn to quiet our passions and trust entirely in His providence. Strive, then, to set aside the fear that gnaws at you, for it is a dream of the soul, seeing things that are not as though they were. Approach your bed as an altar of serenity; pray and commit this night to Him who grants sleep to His beloved. If sleep delays, do not despair.
Lift up hymns in your heart as the apostles did in their prison, and you may find that the very act of praise stills the storm within, bringing gentle rest to your weary body. Remember, the afflictions that keep us wakeful, when borne with faith, purify the soul and make it brighter than the sky. So, let not your heart be troubled, but with a submissive mind like Joseph, obey the quiet voice of God who bids you peace.
