Prayer for my Relationship with a Close Friend

My name is ###. My close friend is ###. We are very close friends who grew up together but lost touch for many decades until recently. I'm trying to take it past the friendship stage into the romantic stage. I pray to God every day that he would open her eyes and heart to this. So far I've seen nothing but positive signs from God that this is the path I'm supposed to be on. I would appreciate the prayers for moving this relationship forward. Thank you and God bless.

We are grateful you have shared this with us and we join with you in seeking the Lord's will together in Jesus' name.

We notice you say you pray to God every day, but you do not mention the name of Jesus Christ in your request. We want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 If you have not already done so, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 We pray all our prayers in the name of Jesus because He is our mediator and our hope.

Concerning your friendship and your desire to move it into a romantic relationship, we understand the joy of reconnecting after many decades and the hope you feel when you see what you believe are positive signs. We encourage you to test all signs and feelings against the Word of God and to trust not in impressions alone but in the clear guidance of Scripture. We are told Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 and But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

We also want to speak plainly about God's design for romantic love. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, and we uphold that any romantic relationship should be pursued as courtship with the goal of godly marriage to another Christian believer, not simply as a partnership or dating for its own sake. This means we encourage you to consider whether both of you know Christ as Savior, for Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14 If you are a man pursuing a woman or a woman pursuing a man, marriage should be the honored goal. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. Hebrews 13:4 Therefore if God does open the door to courtship, we urge you to remain pure and to flee sexual immorality, for Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18 Sex before or outside marriage is fornication and does not honor God, and any same sex romantic relationship would also be outside His design for marriage.

We also encourage you to seek God's will above your own desire, even when the desire feels strong. Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 and But seek first Gods Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33 Sometimes our hearts can interpret kindness or renewed friendship as a sign that God is leading toward romance, when He may simply be restoring a friendship for His own purposes. We encourage you to be honest and respectful in communication with your friend, to honor her freedom and boundaries, and not to press or manipulate her heart but to allow the Lord to work in both of you. Love is patient and kind and does not seek its own way, and true love respects the other person and waits on the Lord's timing. We encourage you to seek wise godly counsel from a pastor or mature believers who know you both, and to pray for clarity rather than only for a specific outcome.

We lift you both up now in prayer together.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We thank You for this long friendship that You have preserved and for the reunion after many years. We ask for Your wisdom and Your perfect will to be done in both lives. Lord, if it is Your will that this friendship should grow into courtship leading to a godly marriage between a man and a woman who both love You, then we ask You to make that path clear to both hearts in a way that honors You, with open communication, mutual faith in Christ, purity, and peace. If it is not Your will, we ask You to give grace to accept it, to guard the friendship from hurt, and to redirect desires toward Your greater purpose. Help our brother to trust You fully, to not be anxious but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let his requests be made known to You, and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard his heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 Keep both from fornication and from any step outside Your design, and help them to seek first Your Kingdom. Draw each of them closer to Jesus, and if either does not yet know Him as Savior, reveal Yourself and bring salvation. We ask for patience, humility, honesty, and respect in all conversations, and that Your name would be glorified in whatever You choose to do. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

Thank you for sharing this with us, ###. Reconnecting with a childhood friend after decades is a rare gift, and we understand why you would feel hopeful and want to be thoughtful about what comes next.

One thing we have found helpful when feelings run deep is to hold both hope and patience together. A long friendship has its own value, and the kindest way to honor it is to give the other person real freedom to share how she sees the relationship, without pressure. It can also help to talk this through with a trusted pastor or mentor who knows you well and can give honest perspective as you sort what you are sensing.

We are praying for you and for ###. We ask for wisdom for you both, for clear and respectful communication, and for peace as you seek God's direction together. We pray you would have grace to listen well, to honor her response, and to trust God with the outcome, whatever it is.

Father, we lift ### and his friend to You. Give them wisdom, honesty and kindness toward one another. Lead them in Your will and guard their hearts with Your peace. Help ### to walk with patience and respect, and to rest in Your good care. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your request has been brought before us and we have considered it with care and prayer before the Lord.

We understand the tenderness of a long friendship renewed after many years, and the desire you feel to see it become more. Yet the Scriptures warn us not to presume upon the future or to say with confidence, we will go and we will do this or that and obtain our desire, without bowing to the sovereign will of God. As it is written, you ought to say, if the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that. It is good and wise to bring every affection and every hope under His control, and to be willing even to stand still until the cloudy and fiery pillar moves before us. What seems to us to be positive signs must always be tried by the Word of God, for the heart may easily mistake its own wishes for the voice of God.

We would urge you, in the fear of the Lord, to seek not merely the fulfilling of your own will, but that your will may be changed and made willing in the day of His power to will and to do according to His good pleasure. True confidence is not in pressing forward in our own way, but in cleaving to Christ and desiring above all that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This will keep you from seeking to bend the will of another to your own, for God does not save or constrain men against their will, but by His Spirit works in them to make them willing according to His purpose.

We also remind you, as we must all be reminded, of the holy pattern the Lord has given for love between a man and a woman, that marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that all romantic affection, and all that belongs to the union of living together, is to be kept within that covenant and in purity before Him. Any pursuit of romance must therefore be with a view to that holy estate, in chastity and honor, with respect for the other person, and only where both are free before God to enter such a covenant. If either of you is already bound in marriage to another, the Lord calls for faithfulness to that covenant and not to seek another.

Rather than asking God to open your friend's heart to your desire, we will pray that He will open both your eyes to see Christ more clearly, for salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and that He will give you grace to walk in His ways, which are full of equity and free from iniquity.

Our prayer for you is this, that the Lord would draw you near to Himself, that you would know His presence and His goodness leading you to repentance where repentance is needed, that you would be kept in constant prayer and perseverance, not only when you feel need but always calling upon God. We pray that He would grant you a holy fear that drives you straight ahead in obedience, that He would give you wisdom to honor your friend with a pure and unselfish love, to respect her freedom and conscience before God, and to be content to leave the outcome in His hands. We pray that if it be His will to lead you together in a godly marriage, He would make that plain in His time and in a way that is clearly according to Scripture, and if not, that He would give you grace to rejoice in His will and to continue in faithful friendship or, if need be, in a loving release, finding your refuge and strength in Christ alone, who will withhold no good thing from them that walk uprightly.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing your heart and trusting us to pray with you. We hear your longing for this friendship and your desire to see it grow, and we want to bring that desire before God with care and wisdom.

Scripture teaches that true friendship is not built only on shared history or warm feelings, but on helping one another toward what is good before God. One passage reminds us that a brother aided by his brother becomes like a fortified city, and that real friendship hinders the things that lead away from God and helps each person walk more faithfully with Him. Another reminds us that love should abound not without reason, but in knowledge and discernment, so that we may approve what is excellent and be sincere and without offense before God and others. Friendships that last are those formed for virtue's sake and for godliness, remaining steady through every change.

With that in mind we want to encourage you to bring this whole situation to the Lord with an open hand. Rather than asking God only to bring about the romantic outcome you desire, ask Him to make His will clear to both of you, and to give you both wisdom to see what is truly excellent and profitable for your souls. Love that honors God respects the other person, does not press or manipulate, and seeks her good as well as your own. It is patient, it listens, it welcomes honest counsel from mature believers who know you both, and it is willing to accept a no as well as a yes.

If you do pursue a romantic relationship, we encourage you to do so in a way that honors God's design. In Scripture romantic love finds its fulfillment in marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and intimacy belongs within that covenant. That means pursuing with purity, with clear intentions, with respect for boundaries, and with a commitment to encourage one another in faith in Jesus Christ, through whom we receive forgiveness and friendship with God. Jesus said we are His friends if we do what He says, and His greatest act of friendship was giving Himself for us so we could be sons and heirs.

So this is how we will pray for you and for your friend: that you both would know Christ more deeply and follow Him faithfully, that God would give you discernment and sincerity and guard you from reading your own wishes into signs, that your friendship would be a help and not a harm to either of you, that God would give clarity and peace about next steps, and that if a marriage covenant is His will for you both, it would be built on shared faith and virtue and lifelong commitment. If it is not His will, we pray He would give you grace to continue to love one another as friends in a way that remains steadfast and godly.

We are grateful you invited us to pray. May the Lord grant you wisdom, self control, and a love that seeks first His kingdom, and may He guide both of you into what is best for His glory and your good.
