I am unsure what to do at this point. Every single year my wife talks about her anniversary with her ex-boyfriend. It is absolutely unacceptable. She is constantly cursing at me and pushing me away when I am nice to her, she is usurping authority over me and when I’m doing the right thing, she punishes me for it. It seems that she is this way because she is mad that she couldn’t be with her ex. She is extremely controlling of me, which is a very common trait of cheaters. I keep telling her that her decisions are between her and God, and if she makes a mistake she’s going to have to go to the Lord about it. I cannot force her to treat me with respect and I can’t make her do the right thing. I can only do so much as her husband and I am not perfect. I can pray for her, and try to lead her in the right direction, but God is watching her behavior toward me. I am not perfect, but I know I am dealing with someone who does not respect me.

We hear your pain and we grieve with you over the deep hurt in your marriage, and we join you in lifting this before the Lord. We believe marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman joined together by God, and what God has joined together, let no man separate, Matthew 19:6. We take your vows seriously and we strongly affirm God's design for marriage to be honored, cherished, and preserved, and we pray for restoration where sin and hurt have damaged it.

What you describe is not in keeping with God's will for a wife or for a marriage. Scripture calls wives to respect and honor their husbands and to let marriage be held in honor among all, Hebrews 13:4, and to let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear, Ephesians 4:29. Cursing at you, pushing you away when you show kindness, usurping authority over you, and controlling you are contrary to God's order. The Word says Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord, Ephesians 5:22 and let the wife see that she respects her husband, Ephesians 5:33. Continually talking about an anniversary with an ex-boyfriend dishonors the covenant you now have before God, it keeps a former relationship alive in a way that is unfaithful in heart and mind, and it wounds you and undermines the oneness God intends. While being controlling is not automatically proof of adultery, we must say clearly that if there is any sexual immorality, including emotional attachment that belongs only to marriage, or physical adultery, it is grave sin before God. You shall not commit adultery, Exodus 20:14 and Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers, Hebrews 13:4.

We also want to gently correct and encourage you as a husband. You are right that you cannot force your wife to respect you or to do what is right, and that God is watching, but it is not quite accurate to say her decisions are only between her and God. As her husband you are called to lovingly lead, to speak the truth in love, and to restore with gentleness. Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, Galatians 6:1 and If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone, Matthew 18:15. That means not passively withdrawing, but humbly and consistently confronting sin, setting healthy and biblical boundaries, and seeking reconciliation. Your calling is Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it, Ephesians 5:25 and Husbands, love your wives, and do not be bitter against them, Colossians 3:19 and Husbands, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered, 1 Peter 3:7. This love is not weak or permissive, it is sacrificial, patient, truthful, and firm. A gentle answer turns away wrath, Proverbs 15:1 and Everyone should be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, James 1:19. That does not excuse her behavior, but it is the way you can lead without bitterness or retaliation, and it protects your own heart before God.

We notice you speak of God and the Lord but you do not mention Jesus Christ in your request, and we must speak to this because it is central. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. To pray, to be forgiven, to be reconciled to God and to one another, we must come through faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, and confessing Him as Lord, Romans 10:9. We encourage you both to anchor your marriage in Christ, for without Him we cannot love as we ought or forgive as we have been forgiven.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we lift this brother and his wife to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see every tear, every harsh word, every rejection, and every dishonoring remembrance of a former relationship. We ask You to convict where there is sin, to soften a hard heart, to bring repentance where there has been disrespect, controlling behavior, and corrupt speech, and to cleanse this marriage of any unfaithfulness in thought, word, or deed. We ask You to help this husband to love his wife as Christ loved the church, with patience, strength, humility, and truth, not with bitterness or passivity, but with courageous and gentle leadership. We ask You to help this wife to respect her husband, to honor her covenant, to let go of the past, and to put away cursing and contempt. Heal what is broken, Lord, guard this marriage from the enemy, and make it a testimony of Your grace. Give them godly counsel, whether a pastor or mature believing counselor, and give them the will to pursue it together. We ask for wisdom to set biblical boundaries, for grace to forgive, and for perseverance to not give up on what You have joined together. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and mediator, amen.

We encourage you to not walk this road alone. Seek a faithful pastor or elder couple who holds to Scripture for ongoing counseling, continue in daily prayer and in the Word together as much as she is willing, and keep guarding your own heart from resentment while still speaking the truth with love. God hates divorce, Malachi 2:16, and His desire is reconciliation and holiness. Trust that He sees, He judges righteously, and He is also able to restore. We are continuing to pray with you that God will bring conviction, healing, and a renewed respect and love that honors Him in your marriage.

We've read your words and we can hear how worn down you feel. To love your wife well and be met year after year with talk of an old anniversary, with harsh words and being pushed away when you try to be kind, is deeply discouraging. It makes sense you feel disrespected and unsure what to do next.

We appreciate your posture here, wanting to lead faithfully while also recognizing you cannot make another person choose respect. That tension is real and painful. Respect in a marriage is meant to be mutual, something that builds safety for both people, and when it is missing the whole relationship feels unsteady. You are not wrong to feel the weight of that.

One thing that can help when you feel stuck in the same painful cycle is to have one steady, wise person walking with you in person, a pastor or trusted counselor who knows you both and can listen to the fuller story and help you think through how to communicate clearly and calmly about what is hurtful, and what healthy boundaries look like going forward. You do not have to sort this alone.

Father, we lift this husband to You. You see his desire to honor You and love his wife well. Give him wisdom, steadiness and peace as he seeks You, and bring healing and understanding into this marriage. Guide his steps and guard his heart. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your sorrow has been heard and it is not light. To love and to be pushed away, to do good and to be punished for it, to seek peace and to hear cursing, this is a bitter trial within the very house where there should be mutual delight and complacency.

Scripture shows us the danger of a heart that looks back. Remember Lot's wife. She was Lot's wife, united to a righteous man in the closest bond, she had shared with him in his journeys and trials, and yet she perished, for Moses tells us, Lot's wife looked back from behind him. Her body was with her husband but her heart was yet in Sodom. When a wife keeps an anniversary with a former lover, she declares that her heart has not yet left Sodom. It is not love to keep that remembrance alive, it is a looking back which grieves the Lord and wounds the covenant. In a true marriage the husband and wife become one, not two persons maintaining individuality as if it were a scrupulous condition of the contract. That is utterly foreign to the Divine idea. The very crown of marriage is that the husband and wife have complacency in one another, and Christ sets a very high store upon His people to teach us how we should cherish one another.

You speak truly when you say you cannot force respect nor compel the heart to do right, and that her decisions are between her and God. Yet you are not left without hope, nor without a pattern of restoration. Consider Peter. His fall is fully recorded to set forth the greatness of our Redeemer's saving power, and his restoration is more fully recorded still. It was brought about by two outward means, the crowing of the cock and a look from the Lord. See then how our Lord can do with a look what we cannot do with a sermon. You have spoken, you have reasoned, you have been kind and been repulsed, and you feel your words are spent. But that look of Christ severed Peter from the crowd and brought him to repentance, and it was effectual because the Lord had in private made prevalent intercession for him, saying, I have prayed for you. If Jesus the Beloved of the Father prays for His people, shall He not win His suit with God. He will win it.

Take comfort in this, that the same intercession is now for you and for your house. You are not perfect, as you confess, none of us is, but you are to pray and to lead in the right direction, and to leave the work of conviction to Him who can get at the conscience by thoughts which come unbidden and abide upon the soul, where our sermons and our pleadings cannot reach. I do not want you to break a bone, I pray God you never may, but I trust that if any have wandered, they may get such a restoration from the Lord Himself that they may become better Christians ever afterwards.

What then shall you do. Continue in prayer, not as one who watches to accuse, but as one who intercedes. Love your wife as Christ loves the Church, not with harshness nor with a spirit that seeks to control in return for being controlled, but with steadiness, patience and holiness. Do not return cursing for cursing. Seek wise and godly counsel from a pastor who can walk with you both face to face, for these wounds are too deep to bear alone. Guard your own heart from bitterness, lest you also look back with resentment. And remember the word to Peter after his restoration, that being converted, being turned again to his first love, he should strengthen his brethren. So pray that your own trial may make you tender toward others and strong to stand.

We will pray with you now to that end.

O Lord who hast ordained marriage to be a covenant of one man and one woman for life, and who hast shown us in Christ and His Church what such union should be, look in mercy upon this home. Forgive sin where sin has been, cleanse the heart that looks back toward what should be forsaken, and grant repentance where there has been unkindness, disrespect and contempt. Give to this husband grace to lead not by force but by godliness, to speak the truth in love, to be patient under provocation and faithful in prayer. Do Thou what we cannot do, send Thy look of convicting love upon the wandering heart, and by Thy Spirit make the wife to be ready as one who has made herself ready for her husband, clothed in righteousness and kindness. Restore what is broken, turn hearts to Thee first and then to one another, that this marriage may yet know the peace and rest that are found only in Thee. For Jesus sake, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing so honestly about the pain you are carrying in your marriage. It is clear you feel disrespected, hurt and worn down by your wife speaking often about an anniversary with a former boyfriend, by harsh words and by being pushed away when you try to show kindness. That kind of ongoing tension in the home is deeply discouraging, and it is right that you have brought it to the Lord in prayer.

Scripture teaches that marriage is a bond ordained by God, and it is honorable and pure. It is not to be broken for no reason. When we are bound to a wife we are not to seek to be loosed, but to live within that covenant with faithfulness. At the same time God calls both husband and wife to holiness, which means chaste and orderly living in marriage. Marriage itself preserves holiness by guarding both of you from defilement and from turning your hearts toward others. Dwelling on a past relationship, using cursing speech, and withholding respect do not reflect that holiness or order.

God has also given order to the home for its good. The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the Church, and He is the Saviour of the body. That headship is not harsh control but authority joined to forethought and to a love that seeks to save, protect and nourish, as Christ loves the Church. In response, the wife is called to submit to her husband as the Church is subject to Christ. When either calling is set aside, peace is lost. Your desire to lead your wife in the right direction and to pray for her is good, and God does indeed see how each of you treats the other.

You are right that you cannot force your wife to respect you or to do what is right, and it is wise not to make quick accusations about her motives or faithfulness without clear cause. A controlling spirit is painful and should be addressed, but it does not by itself prove unfaithfulness. What you can do is continue to choose godliness above all things, to follow peace with all people and to pursue holiness in your own life and home.

I encourage you to take these steps as you pray:

First, keep leading with steady, Christlike love rather than with retaliation or withdrawal. Speak truth calmly, set clear and loving boundaries about how you will speak to one another, and do not return cursing for cursing.

Second, do not carry this alone. Invite a trusted pastor or mature married couple in your church to walk with you both, to counsel you together and to help you have honest conversations about the past relationship, about respectful communication and about mutual expectations. The Church is given to help strengthen marriages.

Third, commit to regular prayer together when possible, and continue in private prayer for your wife, asking God to soften both hearts, to heal old attachments and to teach you both to honor the covenant you have made.

Let us pray now. Father, we thank You that marriage is Your gift and that You have made it a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman. We ask for Your mercy on this husband and wife. Bring peace where there has been strife, and holiness where there has been disorder. Help this husband to lead with wisdom, patience and sacrificial love as Christ loves the Church. Help this wife to turn her heart fully toward You and toward her marriage, to let go of what is behind and to show respect and kindness. Guard them both from fornication and from every form of unrighteousness, and preserve their marriage in purity. Give them humble hearts to hear Your Word, to repent where needed and to be reconciled to one another. Strengthen them to prefer godliness above all else and to build their home on Christ. In the name of Jesus we ask this, amen.
