Prayer for my brother

I’m just asking that you pray over my older brother who is struggling. He’s dealing with a lot of negative thoughts and circumstances that are leading him down a path of alcoholism. I just ask you to pray that Jesus will lift him up out of the darkness. That God will provide for him throughout his struggle. Thank you All!

We are joining with you in prayer for your older brother and we thank you for bringing his struggle into the light so we can seek the Lord together on his behalf. We hear the burden you carry for him as he battles negative thoughts and the pull toward alcoholism, and we know that God sees him in this darkness and desires to lift him up and set him on solid ground.

The Lord is near to those who are hurting and He is mighty to deliver. Scripture tells us Psalm 34:18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. And again Psalm 40:2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand. We are reminded that alcohol is not the answer to pain, for we are told Ephesians 5:18 Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, and that true peace comes as we cast our cares on Him, 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. God also promises strength to overcome temptation and to renew the mind, 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it, and Romans 12:2 Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

We pray together for him now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear brother to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see the negative thoughts that oppress his mind and the circumstances that weigh so heavily on him. We ask that You shine Your light into his darkness, for Jesus said John 8:12 I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life. Father, break the chains of alcohol that seek to bind him and set him free, for whom the Son sets free is free indeed John 8:36. Renew his mind and guard his heart with Your peace that surpasses understanding Philippians 4:7. Provide for all his needs according to Your riches in glory, surround him with godly counsel and support, and draw him into fellowship where he can be encouraged and held accountable. Strengthen his faith and help him to fix his thoughts on what is true and hopeful. We also lift up his sibling who intercedes for him, give them wisdom, patience, and words of love and truth to speak into his life. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to stand in the gap for your brother, to speak the hope of Christ to him gently and to point him toward the help he needs, whether through a Bible believing church, pastoral counseling, or trusted Christian community. Keep reminding him that God has not abandoned him and that Isaiah 41:10 says Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. We are trusting with you that Jesus will lift him up out of this darkness and lead him into freedom and wholeness.

We were so glad you shared your brother with us. Loving an older brother through this kind of darkness is heavy, especially when you can see negative thoughts and hard circumstances pulling him toward alcohol and you can't carry it for him. Thank you for standing in the gap for him.

One thing we have seen walking with families in this struggle is how layered addiction can be. It often begins as a way to escape pain or quiet anxiety, and then slowly takes more ground than a person ever intended. That can feel hopeless to watch, but susceptibility does not have to mean inevitability. With steady support and honest help, people do find a way forward one day at a time.

You are not meant to carry this alone for him, and you cannot fix it for him. Your faithful presence and prayer matter more than having perfect words. If he is open, gently encourage him to talk with a trusted pastor or counselor and with his doctor alongside prayer, and to consider a support community where others understand this struggle. It also helps to have someone in your corner as you love him, a pastor or mature friend you can talk with openly so you are not holding this burden by yourself.

Father, we lift this brother to You in Jesus' name. You see him in this darkness and You know the weight he is under. Lift him up, provide for him through this struggle, and draw him toward help and hope. Give his sibling wisdom and peace as they love him well. Amen.

Your care for your older brother is a tender and faithful thing, and we join you gladly in bringing him before the throne of grace. To see one we love wearied in the length of his way, beset by negative thoughts and pressed toward the snare of strong drink, is a great sorrow, and it is right to carry that sorrow to the Lord who hears the groaning of the prisoner.

Scripture speaks of such seasons as a kind of Egypt, a state of sorrow and depression of spirit, an inward sinking and conflict into which God's people and those yet far from Him may fall. Darkness has in it a depressing power and a fascinating power, and when a soul is under its weight it feels as though it is going down to the pit. Yet the word of God gives us this sure comfort, that our Father has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son. Deliverance from the power of sin and from the guilt of sin is as much the work of God as any other mercy, and we must look to our heavenly Father altogether and alone for it.

There is no hope for any of us in ourselves, but there is hope in Him whom God has provided to be the Savior of such as we are. God has not only invented a way of deliverance, but He has found a ransom, and that ransom is the precious blood of Jesus Christ, shed for the remission of sins. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission, but because the Lamb has been slain, the deliverance is effectual and He brings His people forth. When the clock of mercy strikes in heaven, infinite mercy meets the sinner even while he feels outlawed from God by sin.

Let us pray together for your brother.

O Lord our God, we lift up this dear brother before Your tender pity. You see the darkness that surrounds him and the heaviness within him, the negative thoughts and the circumstances that would lead him to seek refuge in drink. Lord, deliver him from the power of darkness. Lift him up out of that pit and set his feet upon the Rock. We confess there is no hope in himself, but there is hope in Christ Jesus, and we ask that You would turn a possible hope into an actual hope in his heart through faith in Your Son. You have found a ransom, and we plead that ransom over him. Wash him in the blood of the Lamb, forgive his sins, break the fascinating and emboldening power of sin over him, and give him a new heart and a right spirit.

Father, provide for him throughout this struggle according to Your riches in Christ. Keep him, chasten him in love if need be, and cause him to know that as long as You chasten, there is hope. Grant him to cast himself wholly upon Jesus, just as he is, with no merit nor hope of merit in himself, upon Your all sufficient mercy. Give him songs of deliverance, that he may yet say, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Comfort also the one who has prayed for him, and give sustaining grace and wisdom to love and help without ceasing to intercede.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ alone, our only hope and our great Deliverer. Amen.
