Your desire to seek the Lord and to want His will to be done is good and He hears that kind of prayer. God is not looking for a cold legal relationship with you where you simply try to keep rules. From the beginning His purpose in creating us with a will and the power to choose was to have a loving and real relationship with us, and He promised through the prophet Jeremiah that under the new covenant He would write His law on our hearts. That is done as we put our trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation and are filled and led by His Spirit.
That is why the most important question in any relationship is whether each person is truly walking with Jesus and being led by the Spirit. Scripture teaches that our hope must rest in nothing other than a relationship with Christ, and that He is faithful to do His work in us, to cleanse us, to give us His Spirit and to give us power to obey and to walk in His ways. Our part is simply to believe Him and to seek to know and follow His will with a whole heart, not a half hearted one.
You prayed to trust His timing and to remain patient and to have peace regardless of the outcome. That is exactly what Scripture calls us to. Waiting with patience is part of walking with God. He is patient and He is faithful and His work will not fail. As you wait, keep seeking Him first, praying, reading His Word, and asking the Spirit to guide you and to show you His will clearly. He will enlarge your heart and give you peace as you trust Him.
Scripture also gives a clear call to His people to be separate and different from the world and to not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. That means there is no real fellowship between righteousness and unrighteousness or between light and darkness. This applies to close relationships and especially to the question of marriage. Marriage in the Bible is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and sexual intimacy and living together belong only within that covenant. God calls His sons and daughters to live differently because He dwells in us and we belong to Him.
So I would encourage you to bring this relationship before the Lord honestly in that light. Is this young man a genuine believer who loves Jesus and wants to follow Him? Are you both seeking to honor God with purity and with a commitment that looks toward a biblical marriage if it is God's will, rather than simply enjoying companionship outside of that covenant? Do not think you can go against God's command and still come out ahead. If you are not on the same foundation of faith, or if the relationship is leading you away from obedience, God is calling you to come apart and be separate and to touch not what is unclean, trusting that He will be a Father to you.
Pray therefore not simply for closeness between the two of you, but for each of you to draw closer to Jesus, to be made clean through faith in Him, to have His Word written on your heart, and to be strengthened to obey Him. Ask Him to give you both wisdom, to give honest and loving communication that is truthful and pure, to remove confusion, and to soften your hearts toward Him first. Ask Him to make His will unmistakably clear, and to give you the grace to follow it even if His answer is not what you hoped. That is how you will find lasting peace.
May the Lord draw you both to Himself, fill you with His Spirit, guide your steps, and establish you in His will. May He give you patience as you wait and peace that rests in His goodness and faithfulness, knowing that His will done in your life is always what is best.
