Prayer for Me and My Boyfriend

Thank you for sharing your prayer request with us. We join you in bringing this before the Lord and asking for His grace and wisdom over your lives.

We pray that God will protect and guide you both, grant you peace and strength, and help you to trust His timing with patience. Scripture teaches us that patience is shown over time and through trials, and that to love God is to endure without being troubled, waiting with hope for Him who has promised to come and to judge with righteousness. May He comfort your heart and steady you as you wait on Him, and may you find peace regardless of the outcome, knowing that He is faithful and will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, but will provide a way to endure.

We also pray that the Lord will give you clarity and honest communication that builds up and edifies, as all our words should. Ask Him to soften your hearts toward His will above all else, to remove confusion, and to lead you both into what is good and holy. We pray that you will seek His will for this relationship with discernment, honoring Him in purity and in the purpose He has for marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, where love is lived out in faithfulness and self giving. If it is His will for you to continue together, may He guide you toward that commitment in a way that honors Christ. If not, may He give you both peace and courage to follow His path.

We pray that above all you would grow in hope and in trust in Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have salvation and access to the Father. May His grace be upon you, and may He count you worthy of the good things to come as you walk patiently with Him.

Heavenly Father, we lift up this sister and this brother to You. Grant them wisdom, purity of heart, patience in waiting, and peace that comes from trusting You. Let Your will be done in their lives, and draw each of them closer to Jesus. In Jesus name, Amen.

Your desire to seek the Lord and to want His will to be done is good and He hears that kind of prayer. God is not looking for a cold legal relationship with you where you simply try to keep rules. From the beginning His purpose in creating us with a will and the power to choose was to have a loving and real relationship with us, and He promised through the prophet Jeremiah that under the new covenant He would write His law on our hearts. That is done as we put our trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation and are filled and led by His Spirit.

That is why the most important question in any relationship is whether each person is truly walking with Jesus and being led by the Spirit. Scripture teaches that our hope must rest in nothing other than a relationship with Christ, and that He is faithful to do His work in us, to cleanse us, to give us His Spirit and to give us power to obey and to walk in His ways. Our part is simply to believe Him and to seek to know and follow His will with a whole heart, not a half hearted one.

You prayed to trust His timing and to remain patient and to have peace regardless of the outcome. That is exactly what Scripture calls us to. Waiting with patience is part of walking with God. He is patient and He is faithful and His work will not fail. As you wait, keep seeking Him first, praying, reading His Word, and asking the Spirit to guide you and to show you His will clearly. He will enlarge your heart and give you peace as you trust Him.

Scripture also gives a clear call to His people to be separate and different from the world and to not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. That means there is no real fellowship between righteousness and unrighteousness or between light and darkness. This applies to close relationships and especially to the question of marriage. Marriage in the Bible is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and sexual intimacy and living together belong only within that covenant. God calls His sons and daughters to live differently because He dwells in us and we belong to Him.

So I would encourage you to bring this relationship before the Lord honestly in that light. Is this young man a genuine believer who loves Jesus and wants to follow Him? Are you both seeking to honor God with purity and with a commitment that looks toward a biblical marriage if it is God's will, rather than simply enjoying companionship outside of that covenant? Do not think you can go against God's command and still come out ahead. If you are not on the same foundation of faith, or if the relationship is leading you away from obedience, God is calling you to come apart and be separate and to touch not what is unclean, trusting that He will be a Father to you.

Pray therefore not simply for closeness between the two of you, but for each of you to draw closer to Jesus, to be made clean through faith in Him, to have His Word written on your heart, and to be strengthened to obey Him. Ask Him to give you both wisdom, to give honest and loving communication that is truthful and pure, to remove confusion, and to soften your hearts toward Him first. Ask Him to make His will unmistakably clear, and to give you the grace to follow it even if His answer is not what you hoped. That is how you will find lasting peace.

May the Lord draw you both to Himself, fill you with His Spirit, guide your steps, and establish you in His will. May He give you patience as you wait and peace that rests in His goodness and faithfulness, knowing that His will done in your life is always what is best.

I recently broke up with my ex-boyfriend because we are very unequally yoked. I really do not think this man is the person that God has for me to marry (and honestly, I now doubt that I will ever get married) but part of me is still holding out hope that he is and that God will change him. I...
