Prayer for Healing from Alcohol

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I'm writing for a prayer for my dear friend who needs help. He's really struggling, but he doesn't want to deal with his alcohol intake or his mental health issues. He's constantly shutting down and losing weight. He's not taking care of himself. He needs to see a psychiatrist right away. He also has a fatty liver.

We lift up your dear friend before the Lord with heavy hearts, knowing that his struggle with ### and ### is not just a physical battle but a spiritual one as well. The Word of God tells us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." Your friend’s body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and it is being ravaged by ###, which is not only harming him physically but also grieving the Spirit within him.

We rebuke the spirit of ### and bondage that has taken hold of him in the mighty name of Jesus. ### is a deceiver, promising relief but delivering destruction, and we declare that its grip is broken over his life. Proverbs 20:1 warns, "Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise." Your friend is being led astray, and we pray that the scales would fall from his eyes so he can see the truth of his situation. We also rebuke the spirit of pride and ### that keeps him from seeking help. Proverbs 16:18 says, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." His refusal to address his ### and physical well-being is a form of pride that is leading him toward destruction, and we ask God to humble his heart before it is too late.

We pray fervently for his mind and emotions, for the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). His ### is just as important as his physical health, and we ask that God would open his heart to receive the help he desperately needs. We declare that he will not shut down any longer but will find the courage to seek a psychiatrist and begin the journey toward healing. The Lord is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1), and we ask that He would be a very present help to your friend in this time of need.

For his physical health, we pray specifically for his ###. We know that the Lord is the Great Physician, and we ask that He would restore his liver to health. Jeremiah 30:17 says, "For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds, says Yahweh." We claim this promise over his body and declare that healing is coming. We also pray for his appetite and nourishment, that he would begin to take care of himself as an act of worship to God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, "Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Even the simplest acts of self-care can be an act of worship when done with the right heart.

Most importantly, we pray for his soul. If he has not yet surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, we ask that the Holy Spirit would draw him near and convict him of his need for a Savior. John 3:16-17 says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him." There is no healing, physical, mental, or spiritual, that can compare to the healing found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. We pray that he would come to know the love of God in a personal way and that his life would be transformed from the inside out.

Father God, we come before You with hearts burdened for this young man. We ask that You would break the chains of ### and ### that are holding him captive. Give him the strength to seek help, the humility to receive it, and the faith to believe that healing is possible. Surround him with godly people who will speak truth into his life and support him on this journey. Restore his body, renew his mind, and revive his spirit. Let him experience Your love in a tangible way, and may he come to know that true freedom is found only in You. We ask all of this in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, the name above every name, the only name by which we can be saved. Amen.

We can feel the heavy concern you carry for your friend. When someone is shutting down and refusing help, it’s not only heartbreaking, it leaves you wondering what you can possibly do. Many of us have stood in that hard place, loving someone who isn’t yet ready to face their pain.

It’s actually common for people struggling with both ### and underlying ### to minimize or deny what’s happening. ###, where ### and emotional suffering feed into one another, are especially tricky because the very thing that could bring relief (seeing a psychiatrist, treating the ### or ### that often fuels the ###) is what the person resists most. Without forcing a confrontation, just staying gently present can quietly keep a door open. Repeated, calm invitations, “I care about you, and I’ll go with you if you ever want to talk to someone”, can land differently over time.

You mentioned he’s ### and has a ###. While we never want to pressure or lecture, a medical visit for his physical health might feel less threatening than a psychiatry appointment and could become a first step. If he’d allow it, just accompanying him to a general doctor who can check his liver and gently ask about his ### might start a conversation he can’t yet initiate himself.

We’re praying with you that his defenses soften, and that you’ll have wisdom to speak truth in love without pushing him further away. We’re also praying for your own heart, caring for someone who won’t accept help is draining, so please don’t walk this road alone yourself.

Lord Jesus, we lift up this dear friend who is caught in a cycle of ###, shutting down, and neglecting his body and mind. You see the pain he’s trying to escape, and You know exactly what he needs. Quiet his fears, and give him even a flicker of willingness to reach for help. Surround him with people who will speak gently and persistently, and guide his steps toward the medical and mental health care his body is crying out for. Strengthen the one who wrote this request with hope and endurance. In Your name we pray, Amen.

Thank you Heavenly Father for blessing us with another day, and for all you do for all of us. All glory and honor belongs to you Father. Please Heavenly Father grant healing and strength to this loved one. I lift this prayer up on your glory Father God and ask that you grant your perfect will. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

"May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace." Numbers 6:24-26

The grip of strong drink upon your friend is a cruel bondage, yet it is but the outward sign of a deeper malady of heart. The body wastes, the liver sickens, the mind shuts itself away in darkness, these are the bitter fruits of sin indulged, for oftentimes when, by some sin of impurity, a sinner weakens his body and injures his health, his cure is much helped by his repenting and forsaking his uncleanness. There is but one great Physician who lays His hands on men and they are restored, there is but one! Until he turns to Him, even the psychiatrist you long for him to see will apply mere palliatives, never reaching the root of his misery.

You see a man perishing and you cry out for help. That is well, but know this: the leaves of that one tree of life are for the healing of the nations, and they alone can reach his case. The healing power of Christ is conspicuously present when He is teaching. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Your friend shuts his ears, refusing to deal with his condition, and so the smoke of the love of sin blinds his mental eyes. His very desire becomes father to his conclusion, he thinks he is judging fairly but is really pandering to his baser nature. You must pray that the Lord would open his ear to hear the Word that heals. The time is short for listening to every babbler, whether the whisper of the bottle or the false comfort of his own excuses. He must hear the voice of the Son of God and live.

Bring him in spirit to the feet of Jesus, where the poor palsied man lay hoping and expecting forgiveness and healing. For your friend, as for all, the first word from Christ must be, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” Pardon and healing are one! When the Lord comes and dwells with a soul, the Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings. Do not set the cart before the horse by seeking bodily repair before the soul is made whole. He must know that his iniquity is pardoned; then will the tongue of the dumb sing, and the health that flows from the Savior’s cool hand grasping his fevered hand shall restore him. If you believe in the Lord Jesus, there is healing for you, and for him. There is an abundance of healing power in Christ and His salvation; not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the leaves, the little things about Christ, are full of healing virtue.

Yet you must warn him, with all tenderness, that a real saving work is the work of God, and God alone. It is easy to get religious notions and fancy oneself safe, but unless the heart is broken and remade, there is no cure. Are any of you at the present moment disturbed in mind, and vexed in spirit, because you have violated the commands of God? That is the true path. The fruit of the Spirit is afterwards joy and peace, but for a season we must, if saved, endure much mental agony. Pray that your friend’s stubborn shutting down becomes a holy brokenness before his Maker. The Lord heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds, but they must be broken first.

Continue in prayer without ceasing, for we are on our way to eternal health! Even now the Lord has begun to heal many of us, and the healing virtue which His grace has infused into us will work health and cure till we shall be without spot or wrinkle. Lay hold of this for your friend. Do not go blundering about, merely urging him to seek a man’s help, however needful; set him first before the one sacred Fountain, opened on Calvary. There is healing balm there rather than the lancet and the knife. The work of our heavenly Physician is not so much to point out disease as to indicate and apply the remedy. Tell him that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, even the chief. He can make that bloated face adorn with blooming health, and change the gloomy night of his despair into morning. But he must come, and come now, for there are times when the power to save is more than usually manifest, acceptable days, days of salvation. God grant that its healing influences drop upon him thick as leaves in Vallombrosa, until he rises from his bed of sickness to minister unto the Lord who has healed him.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

There is a sickness here deeper than the body’s wasting. You see the weight loss and the failing liver, and you are right to be alarmed. But these are only the outward signs, the smoke of a fire burning within the soul. You ask for prayer, and that is a holy impulse, but prayer must not become a soft pillow on which your friend sleeps more soundly in his destruction. Would you bring a man to the physician only to have him refuse the knife that cuts out the cancer? Your friend is shutting down, you say. This is precisely the soul’s flight from healing. He is like a man with a fever who throws off the blankets, mistaking the chill of sickness for the relief of health, while the disease rages on.

The Scripture commands us to judge not according to appearance. You see a man who won’t deal with his alcohol. I see a man who is clinging to a false comfort, a wealth of oblivion that he thinks feeds him but which is devouring him from within. Real wealth is not the abundance of things we consume, but the state of needing nothing. This man is a beggar, though he may not see it, possessing a bottle but lacking dominion over his own will. He is poor beyond measure, because he desires the very poison that is killing him. This is the deceit: he believes he is managing his pain, when in truth he is deepening the wound for which Christ died.

You say he needs a psychiatrist right away. Yes, and more. He needs to be startled awake. The Deacon’s ancient cry before the holy mysteries still rings out: let the holy draw near. Those who are sick with unrepented sin dare not approach the healing fountain carelessly. This snare is a flame that has risen up to heaven, but it can be extinguished if he is willing. Yet how shall that willingness be born unless he first sees that what he cradles is not a friend but a sword? He suffers from a fatty liver, but the greater peril is a soul grown fat with indifference, sluggish towards the things of God. The rich man’s punishment was not for his wealth, but because he showed no pity, least of all to his own eternal soul.

Do not let him mistake a delay for a cure. Some think a season of superficial reform, a few days’ restraint, is enough to purify the sins of a whole year, and then they run back to the vomit of their former ways. This is a game played in the shadow of hell. Weep for him, but weep with a voice that will not be ignored. Plead with him, not merely that he see a physician for the body that will die, but that he confront the soul that stands in peril of the judgment that never ends. The furnace of this trial can be mastered by the will, but the will must first be seized by a holy dread. For the man who seems to stand, if he does not watch, will fall. And the man who has fallen, if he will not lift up his feeble knees and rise, chooses his own destruction. This is the hour: not for soft words, but for the healing terror of the Lord, who alone can make a whole man healthy.
