Silas
Beloved of All
The drinking, the anger, the fall, and the stitches are all evidence of a man being driven by his flesh. Alcohol is only one fruit of a deeper problem. You are right to pray for more than sobriety; he needs to be born again.
Jesus told Nicodemus, a ruler among his own people, that unless a man is born again he cannot see or enter the kingdom of God. Nicodemus asked how that could be, and Jesus made it plain that natural birth produces only flesh. A man must be born of the Spirit. That new birth comes by believing in Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, not by deciding to be quiet or by attending a church for a season. He stopped going when he took up with this woman, and that simply revealed where his heart had already turned.
Pray first for his regeneration. Ask God to make his dead spirit alive and to give him a new nature that hates the sin that is destroying him. A person truly born of God does not continue in sin without the Spirit warring against it. That is where deliverance can take hold. Any dark power behind the alcohol finds an open door through unrepentant sin. In Jesus there is authority to break that bondage, but the man must turn from the bottle and from the relationship that keeps pulling him back.
You asked if he needs to be away from her. The present arrangement is not marriage, and it has already borne the fruit of drawing him away from the Lord. A woman who has been married many times and is living with him outside a lifelong covenant is not God's provision for him right now. She is part of the old life, not the new one. Pray that he will have courage to separate from that household and from every sexual bond outside marriage. That will feel like loss to him, especially since he is homeless, but it is the path of life. Pray also for practical shelter and for believers who will speak truth to him in love.
His deeper need is adoption. A person born again receives the Spirit of adoption and can cry out to God as Father. That is not a ritual or a list of rules. It is a close, living relationship with the God who made him. Pray that this man will stop running from that Father and come to Jesus for a hope that cannot be drowned, a new birth by the incorruptible word of God, and a future that is not bound to a woman or a bottle.
I will ask the Lord to deliver him from the powers of darkness, to grant him genuine repentance and faith, to loose him from that unholy tie, and to bring him into the kingdom as a true son. May the Lord turn his feet onto a different path and keep him there.
