Prayer request for a man

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Prayer request for a man. He is living with a married woman again. She's been married ### times and he keeps experiencing the same issues. He's gone back to drinking again and family aren't sure if he's doing drugs again because the lady he is with deals drugs. But the lady keeps complaining to family that he is causing her problems, causing her family issues. Please pray for the man. He use to go to church before he met that lady.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up this man who is entangled in a web of sin and destruction. The situation you’ve described is deeply troubling, and we must address it with both truth and compassion, for the Word of God is clear: "Do not be deceived. Bad company corrupts good character" (1 Corinthians 15:33 WEB). This man is walking in darkness, and the path he is on will only lead to further bondage, heartache, and separation from God.

First, we must rebuke the sin that has taken hold of his life. He is living in adultery, for the woman he is with is married, and Scripture is unmistakable: "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers" (Hebrews 13:4 WEB). This is not a gray area, it is sin, and it is grieving the heart of God. The fact that she has been married multiple times does not justify this relationship; in fact, it should serve as a warning. Jesus Himself said, "Whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is divorced commits adultery" (Matthew 19:9 WEB). This man is not only living in sin but is also yoked with someone who is entangled in drug dealing, which is an abomination before the Lord. "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what communion has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14 WEB).

His return to drinking and the suspicion of drug use are further signs of his spiritual decline. The Bible warns, "Do not get drunk with wine, which leads to debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18 WEB). Alcohol and drugs are tools the enemy uses to dull the conscience, weaken the will, and open the door to greater sin. This man is not only harming himself but is also bringing destruction to those around him, including this woman and her family. The fact that she complains about the problems he causes is ironic, for she is the one who has led him into this lifestyle. "Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?" (Proverbs 6:27-28 WEB). He is reaping what he has sown, and unless he repents, the consequences will only grow worse.

We must also address the fact that this man once had a relationship with the Lord but has since turned away. This is a sobering reality, for Scripture warns, "For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment" (Hebrews 10:26-27 WEB). However, there is still hope if he will turn back to God with a repentant heart. The Lord is merciful and desires that none should perish (2 Peter 3:9). But repentance must be genuine, it is not merely feeling sorry for the consequences of sin but turning away from it entirely. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9 WEB).

Now, we lift this man up in prayer, crying out to the Lord on his behalf:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with broken hearts for this man who has strayed so far from Your will. Lord, we know that Your heart breaks for him even more than ours does, for You desire that he would turn from his wicked ways and live (Ezekiel 18:23). We ask that You would break the chains of sin that bind him, break the hold of adultery, of alcohol, and of drugs. Lord, we rebuke the enemy who has blinded his eyes and hardened his heart. We declare that the light of Your truth would pierce the darkness in his life, and that he would see the destruction he is walking in.

Father, we pray for conviction to fall upon him. Let him feel the weight of his sin not to condemn him, but to lead him to repentance. Soften his heart, Lord, and remind him of the joy he once had in You. Bring people into his life who will speak truth to him in love, who will not enable his sin but will call him to holiness. We pray that he would flee from this woman and this lifestyle, for "flee sexual immorality! Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18 WEB).

Lord, we ask that You would restore his relationship with You. If he has never truly surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, we pray that he would do so now. For "if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9 WEB). Let him understand that it is only through the name of Jesus that he can be forgiven, set free, and made new. We pray that he would turn away from his sin and run to the cross, where Your grace is sufficient to cover even this.

Father, we also pray for this woman. Though she is living in sin and leading others astray, we ask that You would open her eyes to the truth. Let her see the destruction her choices are causing, not only in her own life but in the lives of those around her. Draw her to repentance, Lord, and lead her to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

We pray for this man’s family as well. Give them wisdom, Lord, in how to respond to this situation. Let them not enable his sin but also not give up on him. Help them to speak the truth in love, to set boundaries where necessary, and to continue praying for his restoration. Give them strength and peace as they watch and wait for Your work in his life.

Lord, we know that nothing is impossible for You. You are the God who restores the broken, who heals the wounded, and who sets the captive free. We ask that You would do a mighty work in this man’s life. Break every chain, Lord, and set him free. Let him walk in the freedom and victory that is found only in You. We ask all of this in the powerful, mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

To this man, if he reads these words, we say: You do not have to stay in this cycle of sin and destruction. There is a way out, and His name is Jesus. The life you are living now is not the life God has for you. He has so much more, peace, joy, purpose, and freedom. But you must turn away from this sin and run to Him. "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28 WEB). The choice is yours, but we urge you, choose life. Choose Jesus. Today is the day of salvation. Do not wait another moment.

To his family, we say: Do not lose hope. Keep praying, keep loving him, but do not enable his sin. Set boundaries that protect your own hearts and lives, and trust that God is at work even when you cannot see it. "And let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up" (Galatians 6:9 WEB). Your prayers are powerful, and God hears them. Keep standing on His promises.

We hear the heartbreak behind this request, you care deeply for this man, and watching someone you love sink back into old patterns is agonizing, especially when you remember who he was before. We’re praying with you.

The situation you describe sounds like a cycle that’s pulled him far from the light he once knew. Addiction and unhealthy relationships often feed each other, and the pull back into drinking, and possibly drugs, when he’s around someone who deals, makes sense from a human standpoint, even if it’s tragic. He’s not the first man to drift from church and then spiral; many of us have seen it up close. And yet, as long as he’s breathing, hope is real. People do find their way back, and the very fact that you’re still praying for him is a lifeline he may not even know he has.

One grounded step for you, if you haven’t already, is to make sure you’re not carrying this worry alone. The family sounds both concerned and frustrated, and that’s understandable. A support group for families of addicts, like Al-Anon or a church-based group, can give you steady ground to stand on, practical wisdom about what helps and what doesn’t, and people who get it. It’s not about fixing him from a distance; it’s about strengthening you so you can love him wisely without being pulled under.

When it’s safe and natural, a simple, pressure-off message that he’s still loved and that his old church community has not forgotten him can plant a seed. No lectures; just genuine presence. And in the meantime, we pray:

Lord Jesus, we lift this man to You. Break the hold that alcohol, any drugs, and this destructive relationship have on him. Give him moments of clarity, even a flicker of memory of the peace he once had in Your house. Protect him from the dangers around him, physically and spiritually. For his family, grant them wisdom, peace, and the right words at the right time. Draw this man gently but firmly back to the One who never stopped loving him. In Your name we ask it, amen.

This man is caught in a net of his own making, a wretched backslider who has exchanged the courts of the Lord for the haunts of iniquity. He once sat under the sound of the gospel, yet now he lies down in the lap of a Delilah who will surely shear his locks and deliver him over to his enemies. The troubles she complains of are but the bitter fruit of a tree he planted with his own hands, and yet, let us not forget, the Lord has chastened him sorely, for these recurring miseries bear the marks of a Father's rod, not the random blows of chance. The drinking, the suspected drugs, the entanglements with a woman who peddles poison, these are the chains with which the Evil One binds his captives fast, and no human effort can snap them asunder.

But there is mercy! Deliverance from going down to the pit has been found, for God Himself has provided a ransom. Our prayers must not be merely that this man escape the immediate trouble, but that he be rescued from the power of darkness, from the very love of his sin. The judgments he now feels may wring from him a carnal repentance, a temporary fright that sends him running from one flame only to embrace another, like Judas flinging down the silver yet refusing to fall at the feet of Jesus. He may hate the consequences, but until he hates the backsliding itself and cries out of a broken heart, his seeming reformations will be but washed and brushed nature, soon returning to its vomit.

Yet what a hope lies in those words: “Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.” Christ Jesus is that ransom! He has delivered us from the guilt of sin and He alone can deliver from its tyranny. Pray that this poor soul may be brought to an end of himself, that his mouth may be stopped, and that he may cast himself wholly upon the atoning sacrifice. He needs no mere moral improvement, but the new birth; not a patching up of the old garment, but a new creation in Christ. The very ones who brought him to our notice must not cease to plead with heaven, for only the strong arm that led Israel out of Egypt can lead this man out of his bondage.

If he should be restored, let it be with a clear testimony: “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.” God can heal his backsliding in a moment, and the chariots of Amminadib will bear him swiftly from the far country. Then, like Jacob at Jabbok, he shall meet his Esau not with dread but with tears of reconciliation. Pray then, not weakly but with holy violence, that this wanderer may prove that God has not forsaken them that seek Him, and that he may yet sing among the upright, “The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over unto death.” All glory to delivering grace!

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The peril of that man’s soul weighs heavily on every word of your request. He who once tasted the heavenly gift of forgiveness, who once was a partaker of the Holy Ghost, has now entangled himself again in the very sins from which he was cleansed. You see the pattern clearly: the same issues return because the root is not severed. He went back, like a child to the breast after being weaned, and now the bitter drugs of affliction are anointed upon his life to make him loathe that which he craves.

The drinking, the drugs, the strife, the shame, these are not mere misfortunes but the gall and wormwood Christ uses to lead him away from his destruction. Do not mistake his tears or his complaints for repentance. It is possible to weep and yet find no place of repentance, as Esau did, if the grief is worldly and not a true turning from sin. Repentance requires not only sorrow but a complete forsaking of the unlawful bed and the fellowship with wickedness.

He must flee that woman as one flees a fire, or his tears will be empty. Yet do not despair of him. Repentance has great force, and it can set free even those who have come unto the very depth of wickedness. Pray that God would grant him a true, deep, and lasting repentance, not just remorse for consequences, but a hatred of the sin itself.

Pray also for yourselves, that you may have wisdom to speak the truth in love, for such a one often needs to be shown, with all gentleness, that his hope of salvation rests not on past experiences but on present obedience and continence. Let us all examine ourselves, for we all have need of the grace and peace of God to practice virtue aright. May Christ be formed in him again.

The painful cycle you're describing, the return to the same relationship, the same destructive patterns, the drinking, the fear of drugs, the turmoil she brings into his life and her family, this is what happens when a man tries to build his life on a foundation that stands against the Lord's clear design. You cannot find stability while living in what God calls sin. The attempt to make a home in a situation that is not lawful or honoring to Christ will always crumble. He is experiencing those consequences, and the complaints from the woman only confirm the disorder at the heart of it all. Righteousness can never be manufactured by our circumstances or by joining ourselves to the wrong person; it has to flow from a heart made right with God.

You remember that he used to go to church. That is the flicker of hope, though the state he is in now is worse than if he had never known the way. A backslider is often harder to reach because he still carries the language and the memory while his life denies it all. But hear this clearly: the Lord’s call to such a man is not yet silent. The message toward the wayward is to return, to acknowledge the iniquity. God declares He is merciful and will not keep His anger forever. The only path forward is repentance, turning away from this woman who is not his wife, turning away from the substances that are mastering him, and turning his face back toward the Lord. The promise stands: “Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings.”

What we must pray is that he stops exhausting himself in the horizontal mess. You cannot fix a broken relationship by pouring more time and effort into it while everything else in your life falls apart. Spending all your energy trying to balance this one forbidden attachment will only multiply the chaos, as you are already witnessing. His real need is to return to the vertical axis, to get his relationship with God restored. When a man stands upright with the Lord, then a right order can begin to touch everything else. Without that, it is just one soul-draining crisis after another.

He once had a taste of that first love, that simple devotion to Jesus Christ. The call of Christ to His church is always a call back to that deep, intimate, loving relationship. This man has been playing the part of one who is spiritually unfaithful, joining himself to what the world offers and calling it love. But the church is meant to be presented as a pure bride to Christ alone. For this man, any union that breaks God’s law is a form of spiritual betrayal. He needs to leave it completely. There can be no compromise with evil; the wise path is to not tolerate it at all, for the sake of his very soul.

Pray that the Spirit would convict him of this false love and draw him back to genuine excitement and peace in Christ. Pray that the Lord, in His mercy, would break the hold of this relationship and the addictions that come with it. Ask that God would send into his life a clear warning and a way of escape, perhaps through a faithful brother who will speak the truth without excusing the sin. And pray that the answer will be found upon his lips: “Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God.”
