We have heard your burden for your grandson and we join with you in bringing him before the Lord, asking for a change of heart and attitude. It grieves us that when he becomes angry he hits and throws things, and we understand your concern for his safety and for those around him. We want to stand with you in prayer and in biblical counsel.
The Bible takes anger seriously and calls us to self control. We are told, Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath Eph 4:26, and A fool vents all of his anger, but a wise man brings himself under control Prov 29:11. We are also taught, Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God James 1:19-20. Hitting his own body or the body of another and throwing things in anger is not pleasing to God and can cause real harm. The body is created by God and we are to honor Him with it, and love for neighbor means we do not harm others in our anger. This behavior must be lovingly corrected and not excused, even while we show patience and compassion for a child who is learning to manage strong emotions.
Scripture places the primary responsibility for training a child upon parents, with grandparents offering support and wisdom. We are told, Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it Prov 22:6, and Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, the rod of discipline drives it far from him Prov 22:15. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord Eph 6:4. This means consistent, loving discipline that teaches rather than shames, calm instruction when he is not angry about how to handle anger in a godly way, clear boundaries and consequences delivered in love, and modeling self control ourselves. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control Gal 5:22-23, and God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Tim 1:7. We can ask God to cultivate that fruit in him and to give you wisdom, for If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him James 1:5. Practically we encourage you to work together with his parents if possible, to set a calm and consistent response to his anger, to teach him words to use instead of hitting or throwing, to pray with him and for him daily, and to praise him when he chooses self control, trusting that God can give him a new heart as He promises, I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you Ezek 36:26.
We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to God and find salvation. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved Rom 10:9. It is in His name that we pray with confidence, and we want to make sure you know the hope we have in Him.
Let us pray together.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we lift up this precious grandson to You. Lord, You know his heart and his struggles with anger. We ask You to soften his heart, to calm his spirit, and to teach him self control. Deliver him from the impulse to hit and to throw things, and help him to learn to express his feelings with words and with respect for others and for his own body. Fill him with Your peace and with the fruit of Your Spirit. We pray for his grandparents and parents, grant them wisdom, patience, unity and strength to train him in Your discipline and instruction with love and consistency and without provoking him to more anger. Give them words of grace and firm boundaries, and let their home reflect Your love. We pray that this family would know Jesus more deeply and trust in His power to transform hearts. We ask all of this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
We encourage you to continue steadfast in prayer, to speak truth in love to him, and to trust that God is able to work change over time as you faithfully teach and correct him. We are praying with you that the Lord will bring peace to his heart and to your home.
