A prayer for rain is good, but do not seek from heaven a sign while neglecting the sign God has already given in your own soul. You can read the face of the sky and know a storm is brewing, yet you fail to read the condition of your heart, where the fire of greed, lust, and unforgiveness burns far more fiercely than any forest flame. The rain that falls from clouds will douse dry timber, but what rain will quench the fire of sin that the devil has kindled within you? That flame is extinguished only by the water of mercy, by alms and tears of repentance.
When the Spirit sees no fruit of charity in you, He is quenched, and you walk in a darkness more perilous than any smoke filled night. Robbers first put out the lamp before they plunder; so the demons urge you to neglect the poor and indulge every passion, so they may strip your soul bare. Therefore, pray for rain in France and Spain, yes, but also let your prayer be drenched in almsgiving. Stretch forth your will toward God like Abraham, with a faith that acts, not one that merely observes the weather.
Offer the fruit of righteousness, and the Father who welcomes back the prodigal will quickly extinguish His righteous anger and send relief. Do not be like those who can forecast a heat dome but cannot discern the present time of visitation, when God calls you to return. The tiller of the soil faces many trials: hail, drought, fire, and wild beasts. So the soul faces the wild assaults of the evil one, irregular passions, and the conflagration of unchecked desire.
Yet if you are willing, the flame that has risen to heaven itself can be mastered, for it was your own choice that lit it. Consider the unprofitableness of earthly wealth, the vanity of clinging to what cannot follow you beyond the grave, and let that thought be a cooling shower upon your greed. Let your prayer for physical rain be joined to an inner downpour of compassion. Then, whether the skies open or not, you will have stored up treasure where no fire can consume and where no thief can steal.
