Thank you for sharing so honestly about your mother and the weight you and your father are carrying. To see a mother who is aging, facing both cancer and dementia, sleeping so much and taking so little food and drink, is heartbreaking. And to be the ones feeding her every day until you are worn out is a heavy and holy burden. Scripture says to honor father and mother, and that honoring is lived out in just this kind of faithful, daily care when it would be easier to step back. God sees that labor, even labor to the point of exhaustion, and He is the God of comfort and hope and peace who draws near to those who are weary.
I understand your desire for a miracle, and it is right to bring that desire to the Lord. We can come boldly to His throne of grace through Jesus and make our requests known, because Jesus has opened the way for us as His family. God is able to do all things, and there are accounts in Scripture of Him healing waters, multiplying bread, and even raising a child who had died. Yet the greatest miracle He does in any life is to free us from the power of sin and bring us into His kingdom and give us eternal life. That gift rests on His own promise, and He cannot lie.
That is why the Bible speaks so much about hope. Hope is more than a wish. It is desire joined with expectation. Without God the world is without hope, and the more things deteriorate the more hopeless it feels. But in Christ we have been brought near by His blood and given a living hope through His resurrection from the dead. Peter thanks God for this, that we have been born again to a living hope. Paul writes that in hope of eternal life, which God promised before time began, we are justified by grace and made heirs. Because the promise comes from God who cannot fail, the hope is sure. It sustains us when things are dark and when we are discouraged, when everything else is failing around us.
Your hope for your mother is not misplaced when it is anchored there. Whether the assessment shows a virus that can be treated or that she is nearing the end of life, your desire and your expectation can rest in Jesus. For the believer there is the promise of a building from God, not made with hands, eternal in the heavens, a new life with Him. That is the blessed hope we wait for patiently, not in circumstances or systems of this world, but in the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
The Word of God is also given to be our comfort in such a time. As the psalmist says, remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope. Many have found that in seasons of sorrow and exhaustion, a single promise from Scripture steadies the heart when strength is gone.
So we pray with you. We ask the Lord to have mercy on your mother, to be near to her in her weakness and confusion, to ease any pain or fear, and to do what is gracious and best according to His perfect will. We ask Him to give wisdom to the paramedics and those caring for her as they assess her. We ask Him to pour out strength and peace on you and your father in your exhaustion, to comfort you as only He can, and to keep your hearts anchored in that sure hope of eternal life through Jesus. If your mother knows Him, that hope remains unshaken. If there is any uncertainty, we pray she would hear and receive His love and redemption even now.
