“You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.” - Exodus 18:18
There are three important insights that every leader must know in order to lead effectively.
What is too much for you…
What is too little for you…
What is just right for you…
Every leader should be making this assessment when in a leadership capacity. Moses is emancipator, lawgiver, and liberator. Yet, at the end of Chapter 17, Moses gets tired and needs others to help him hold his arms up. He has to be given some wise counsel in Chapter 18. The people were going to Moses day after day for Moses to decide their disputes. Moses would decide daily on what was good for the people…
Jethro offers some practical advice; get some help. When a leader tries to do everything, they will soon become weary and become intoxicated with power. No matter how gifted you are and the anointing on your life; No leader is Superman every day. Every leader is human. You will get tired and you do need some wise counsel. Every leader should be in a place of accountability. If not, the tendency is to believe that one does everything right and one is great all the time. This is not the case. We can learn 3 practical lessons from Moses’ experience in Chapter 18…
1. Leaders are learners…Every leader should be in a continual position and posture of learning. When a leader stops learning, they will stop leading…
2. You can’t be everything to everybody and You can’t do everything for everybody…The tendency for a leader is to have all the answers. Every leader also wants to feel important. Be careful, leaders can be so accommodating that those we lead, we accommodate. People will come to depend on a leader for everything and a leader may even feed themselves into believing that everybody needs them…This is dangerous…Intoxication of self will make one too drunk with power…!!!
3. Learn how to ask for help and then pass what you know along to grow someone else…Do not be afraid to ask for help. No leader knows it all. When you learn, pass it on. Someone else needs to learn. Someone else needs to grow. Someone else needs to mature. Help and lift someone else to their next station…
It is important for us to learn from Moses that leadership is about assessing, developing, and growing situations and the people around us. We are not in a leadership vacuum to garner all the attention and accolades for ourselves…
