Cast this fear away, for it dishonors the One who has promised to help thee. "Fear not, thou worm Jacob; I will help thee, saith the Lord." Why shouldst thou be afraid? The eternal God has covered thee with His feathers, and under His wings dost thou trust. That covering is not the cold shield of a soldier but the warm, homely protection of a mother for her young. There is love in it, relationship, heart-working in it all. Canst thou not rest there?
Thou art setting out upon a journey, and thy heart trembles for thy safety and thy health and thy return. But consider this: everything in the future is appointed by God. He knows each wind and the speed at which it shall travel. Each hour is safe, for God has made it so. The very place of difficulty and danger shall be secure to the one that rests beneath the wings of the Eternal. Is this not the antidote of fear? Thou criest out for health; thou fearest sickness because that may be appointed. But it is also appointed, "I will make all his bed in his sickness," and that appointment carries thee over the other. Thy safety lies not in thy own keeping, but in the hands of "God our Saviour," who is able and as wise as He is able to keep thee from falling.
And does not this journey, with its cry to return home safe, speak to thy soul of a deeper return? The voice of God bids thee, "Return, return." Let there be in thy heart a constant returning to Him from whom all thy fears flow. Thou art uneasy till the doubt is gone, and that proves thee a child. Then play the man and let faith overcome this fear. "Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you." Thy life is uncertain, therefore return now to thy confidence in Him. Thou canst not too soon be safe, and thou canst not be safe but in the shadow of the Almighty. As thou art in the way, let thy heart be ever returning to its rest. Fear not; thou shalt not be ashamed. Be not confounded, for the Lord thy God shall hold thy right hand, whispering even now through the noise of thy trembling, "Fear not."
